Its a collective tool and you should familiarize yourself with all of the above more or less at the same time. Oh and you left out SQL.

in Facebook Chat? Bah! on Paul Jacobson
Geez, Paul, thank you for the compliment! I really appreciate it.

You raise some serious issues here, which I have not given much thought to really. My opinion is pretty low on Microsoft ever since the Microsoft, SCO vs Open Source Linux issue. I think they employ extremely shocking tactics and they are an evil company. That is how I see them. Whether it is true or not, doesn't matter. What matters is that Microsoft is involved and now owning me in a different space. Who knows what they are doing with that data? If they can protect their source code for so long, so effectively, there is no saying what they do behind closed doors...

Even so, its not really about Facebook for me. Yes, regrettably Facebook were the first to implement this. It is about the communication aspect of it. It is about taking Social Networking to a new level, and not about how awesome the feature is. I do have to admit, I have some sense of admiration for how its been done from a technical prespective. I think it works great! I've said it many times before. I do not like Facebook. Like you, I build my network, but do so feeling almost bullied into it. Not by anyone in particular, but simply due to the fact that if I'm not there, I'm missing out on hooking up with my non-techy friends.

Dude, I feel your pain regarding your wife. It almost seems to me that that is the real issue for you here! ;-)

in The case of DataPro and the Twitter on Paul Jacobson
Paul, very interesting indeed! I wish twitter would include tracks in their API. Then businesses could sign up and record tracks for their name and they'd know whats being said about them. Alas, we're not there yet!

Oh and, www. is not so 2007, but SOOOOOO 1999!!!

in I must pay Netcare so my son can visit his brother! on Justin Hartman
Dude, trust me, writing off the R350 would be the best thing you could do for Luke. He is as excited as you are, so you'll be doing Luke an injustice to keep him from seeing his bro. Go to another hospital where they don't mind. I remember at the Medi-clinic with Henk's birth, the brother were allowed to visit, but not other kids.

in How do you manage your tasks? on Paul Jacobson
OmniPlan and OmniFocus are overly complicated. We use Basecamp to organize tasks, todos and deadlines and it is as easy as PI and pretty effective, although quite basic. I'd suggest that you take a look at it. http://www.basecamphq.com/

Another very similar service is http://huddle.net

Both are project management services, but I reckon would be very effective if applied for scheduling daily tasks.

in Flurry of tweets in FriendFeed on Paul Jacobson
I disagree. I do not think debating whether or not Twitter should or shouldn't be used as a chat app is necessary. It offers the functionality, therefore it WILL be used as such. Might as well enjoy it along the way. If you use Twitter through the web to update (i.e. NOT as a chat platform) it is okay to include it wherever you want. If you use it like a chat app (like me) then simply be savvy enough not to pollute everything with senseless tweets (again, like me! dammit, my ego has a leak... brb)

Skype, Google Talk, MSN, etc. is not a solution at all since it is pretty much peer-to-peer and you'll never know who is hosting what group chat where.

IRC could work, but it is not web integrated. Ugh, there is no easy answer it seems!

in How important is money? on Justin Hartman
Great thoughts and I agree. Of course money buys happiness! That said, I don't think money is the only source of happiness. Similarly, I don't think it can buy everything. ( Like it cannot buy back a life or time spent / wasted. )

Oh Gawds!!!! No I suffer true 'identity crisis'! I always thought I were an Afrikaner, but are nothing like that!

Excellent video though! Yes, you do get a lot of those people...

Wezz I live in Pta so I see those people everyday - especially on Bulls match day, that and worse. But yeah I'm sure there are a few who aren't like the stereotypical Afrikaner at all ;).

in A few thoughts on the Newsgator announcement (aka Desktop versus Web-based feed readers) on Paul Jacobson
Paul, I must add that I'm using ONLY NNW lately. It is great. Specially because I can catch up with feeds when Eskom pulls the plug. ;)

in Flirting with NetNewsWire on Paul Jacobson
Paul, funny you should write about this! I was doing exactly the same yesterday. I checked it out and I'm quite frankly very impressed. The user interface is awesome. I love it how you can open an feed item in NNW as a background loading icon while you continue to read other feeds. The only, ONLY objection I have at the moment is that the built in browser, although it renders pages perfectly, does not support flash. That means, if you embed a Youtube video, I can't simply view it in the built in browser. Other than the, I think it is one great reader.

in Plettenberg Bay storm damage. Spot the difference.. on thescott
Geez, by the looks of the surrounding towns, I'm amazed that we didn't! Thankfully, we came off light this year.

This is the second year running that we experienced floods! Last year struck George much more heavily. We had something like 400mm rain in 24 hours last year. This year it was almost the same but in a period of about 5 days, so it was not so devastating.

Even now, the weather is weird. We had one summers day this week, the rest of the time it was cold and rainy. Most weird.
