in 5 Strange Stop-Gap “Solutions” to Climate Problems on Ecoble
The atmospheric content of carbon dioxide has increased by 35% since the onset of the industrial revolution. You don't suppose there is any chance that radical of a shift in our air could possibly be altering the environment, do you?

in Think Digg Has Jumped The Shark? Try Mixx on Webomatica
I'm amazed at how many folks are using Mixx already ... I have to say I enjoy it somewhat for its 'smallness' but on the other hand a lot of the features don't seem to innovate over what other social networks offer. Time will tell, and it certainly is getting popular, I'm just not sure about it yet :)

in Apologies For Recent Blog Slackitude on Webomatica
I'm a big fan of the emerging theory that frequency doesn't matter ... I for one don't stop reading a blog that posts less frequently, and WebUrbanist only has a few posts a week but quite a following despite that. I used to stress out about it until I read this gem of an article arguing against the need to post at a fixed rate of at least one a day: http://www.mpdailyfix.com/2006/06/w_why_blog_po...
Anyway, it helped me relax :)

OK my nickname does start to feel generic when there's "Mysterious Slammerworm, James Bond fan" on the list :)
And yes, that was a very, very strange link ... I'll thank you for sharing it once my brain comprehends what I just read!

in Google PageRank Gripes on Webomatica
Techipedia is down to 4 ... why? I don't think Tamar is selling links lol. And Neatorama? Are you kidding me? That site has tons of backlinks and a huge audience, a PR4 is just misleading, and all because they sold a few links. The punishment doesn't seem to fit the 'crime' in a lot of these cases ... a few small sold links and a site gets demoted to the level of a n00b blog. Bleh.

in Google PageRank Gripes on Webomatica
What I can't believe is that OneMansBlog just dropped to PR5 from PR8. Not only does John (the blog's author) know Matt Cutts personally but he even (at Matt's personal request) removed the paid links he used to have on the site. I could understand drops of one point as a warning, but so many sites seem to have lost two or (in John's case) even three. That seems extreme, especially in cases where people have fixed the linking problems. :(

Yeah, it was like poppy 80s stuff ... truly terrible and mainstream. I think I got a bootlegged copy off a friend a while back. If I dig it up sometime I'll be sure to post it somewhere it can be downloaded and let you know. Very very very odd :)

I just have to ask: when you say you have her first two albums, you don't mean this one I take it: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Alley/4370...
I got a hold of that years ago and it's simply hilarious - predates anything most people have ever heard by her - extremely on the mainstream side of things and utterly bizarre to say the least :)
I have to admit I haven't gotten anything of hers recently either ... I've been pretty lazy about getting new music, which is why I perk up when I see other people recommending stuff, since I don't feel like I have the time/energy to go out and search for things, particularly written by artists I don't already know!

I watched both the videos and I have to say I enjoyed the music more when I closed my eyes. The vids didn't fit the tone of the songs to me, particularly the latter more staccato tune ... the setting seemed kind of generic for the song. Anywho, not quite as edgy bit a tad in the vein of Ani ... also reminded me of Tori ... am I betraying the age of my musical tastes here?

in Link Sharing 10/4/07, September Summary on Webomatica
Hey thanks for the shout out! Actually, I've been having the REVERSE problem recently: too much non-spam getting clogged in Akismet. I think this is due to the fact that I often ask for people to put in relevant links related to post content, which, of course, can flag a comment for Akismet.
The other problem I've been having is spam trackbacks getting through ... I saw that 115 people had clicked a trackback yesterday and went to take a closer look: sure enough, the trackback's text content was 'Click here to see the original blog source.' I looked the site and it's basically an auto-scraper, only site readers on Web Urbanist thought they were the original source! So clever, and such a pain.

Tags and categories ... the endless pain to be sure. I haven't switched up to the new version yet but am looking forward to it. My advice to any newer bloggers who may read this comment: figure out categories and tags you might want to use early on to avoid crazy clutter!

in How Would You Improve Your Blog Or Blogging? on Andy Beard - Internet Business Systems Discussion
My goals:
1) Add more in-between short posts - right now there are too many heavy-duty long posts that take time to research, write and edit.
2) Move to two right sidebars that are both geared toward typical ad sizes, instead of one right and one left that are both unusually sized.
These are as much to-do goals for myself as things I'd suggest to newere bloggers ... think ahead of time about what kind of ads you'd add and where, and how you'll maintain a healthy post frequency :)

in Stumbleupon Algorithm Unearthed? on Andy Beard - Internet Business Systems Discussion
Definitely a key factor is also category/tags when it comes to how Stumble-power translating into real hits on a page. However, that wasn't within the scope of the AMAZING analysis to which you linked - probably the best attempt I've seen to rigorously analyze StumbleUpon. Three thumbs up!

in BlogRush Offers Free Syndicated Blog Traffic on Marketing Pilgrim
BlogRush ... what can I say? I keep reading the hype but seeing the facts: BlogRush often displays spammy links I'd never voluntarily allow on my site in any form, and often links to pages that mysteriously don't even have a BlogRush widget on them.
Personally, I use two widgets: MyBlogLog and Romlet - these help me see who is visiting and linking in and also help me boost traffic, but they only reward - with links - actual visits or traffic referrers.

Heh, what we may be seeing is (finally) the burst of that second big web bubble ... just be sure to be above the surface when it pops ;) I think the big guns reporting issues will, as you suggest, end up being the biggest sign of the times.

in Is Google Giving Away Free PR8 Links? on John Cow dot COM
I don't really know where to start to answer this - which is probably why Jon Cow didn't try. First: toolbar-displayed PR is not the same as Google PR. John Cow does not have a PR value of 0. They are constantly updating PR values behind-the-scenes but haven't made them public for about six month.
Second: a Google PageRank value is still the best single method of assessing a website's age and/or authority quickly. Sure it is worth looking at Alexa, Technorati and others too, but those are far more easily gamed.
Finally: social media popularity brings in temporary traffic (over 1/2 million visitors to Web Urbanist in the last month alone) but even more valuable: backlinks which help you come up on Google searches and boost your PR and readers who stick around and make or break a site in the long run.

Actually, hehe, I should be embarassed to admit this but: I use the little 'eraser head' sized mouse in the middle of my IBM laptop and can't use a touchpad to save my life. This would be awesome for me, since I'm much more skilled with my Graphire pad which uses a pencil than with using my finger on this stupid built-in pad!
