in Income tax gets a boost at forum on Nashua Telegraph
Agree for the most part.
Plan -
1. Abolish all property taxes, local and state. They are expensive to accurately maintain (compared to income taxes), there will always be inequities in comparing properties, and they are not fairly based on ability to pay.
2. Institute a flat income tax that is collected at the local level once per year. No withholding. No deuctions. Whatever the gross income is, you pay the same percentage as anyone else. Everyone has a stake in keeping the budget low. The municipality votes for the following year's budget by the end of the year. Once the total income is determined by the following April, you can figure out the tax rate needed based on income and budget. It is not a fixed rate, it gets adjusted every year.
3. The state gets their budget by continuing eliminating the tolls and increasing the gas tax to compensate. They continue to increase taxes on tobacco and alcohol, registrations, etc. The state budget is voted by the electorate as well. These fees are not determined by the Executive Council but rather a vote by the people based on the state budget.

in Y members needn’t shift to Merrimack during build on Nashua Telegraph
Sounds great, but I'm tired of the city proclaiming a "sports complex" in that area. The pool the YMCA is planning is not adequate for high school meets as it will share a pump with the family pool. Also, it will not have off-deck seating for observers of meets, this is the equivalent to a football field with no raised bleachers.
The Goffstown YMCA has both of these, why can't the city chip in if they are planning to use these facilities for the high schools?

The city is basicially giving the land to the Y, maybe you should contact the Mayor about your concerns, this is her pet project,, she pushed it.
Want Courts in New Y!
I agree. Stop calling it a "sports complex." From what I understand, it will most likely not even have any gym space for Basketball or Volleyball. Right now there is a Volleyball league that uses 4 courts at the Nashua Y and was going to have to drop half it's teams in order to fit into the Merrimack Y. At least now we'll get another year of play in Nashua. :)
G
They snookered the Y in there without public input, don't worry Dog, they will snooker that in there too.

in Hudson rep aims to block decision on kindergarten on Nashua Telegraph
Where is the proof that Hudson kids are getting a raw deal without kindergarten? What's next? Pre-K? 3-year-olds? Why don't we just hand our kids (at birth) and our paychecks over to the government and let them decide what to do with both.

The concept behind education is to educate kids. You have a misguided perception regarding the purpose of public education and the government's role. In it's history, and today, public education has never been about parents "handing their kids over to government."
The idea of public education began with Thomas Jefferson who believed that a free society is an educated society. Time after time, studies show that the earlier a child begins his academics, the less likely he/she will drop out of school.
The evidence is there if you just aknowledege it.

Having one tax makes sense, as it streamlines government and reduces overhead. If a company set up 2 or 3 different departments to collect money from customers, this would be inefficient and they would quickly set up one accounting department to collect it. Why should the state set up seperate registration/tolls/gas tax?
Set up one method for collecting the money. I believe the gas tax is the most fair of the three for it truly measures the amount you use your vehicle versus tolls (which some people never have to pay) and registration (which does not take into account usage at all). I understand you drive a car that uses more gas, but on the majority of days you don't need an SUV, you could buy a cheap energy-efficient car and save money on gas.
The fewer types of taxes we have, the smaller the government needs to be. The gas tax is the cheapest to collect as nobody needs to be present at the pump when I gas up.

We already have a gas tax here in Massachusetts....a rather high gas tax. The new gas tax in addition to the old tax would bring MA gas tax up to 43 cents per gallon...of which The Berkshires (where I live) only gets 1.5 cents. It doesn't make sense to tax the extreme western part of the state when we don't get the same services that the eastern side of the state gets. We don't get pike repair we don't get road repair. We have no T and we have no big dig. People out here are closer to Albany than Boston. Big government seems to forget about the Western part of this state until it's time to tax the heck out of us.
AND FYI to the person who was so rude in the comment beneath mine. I drive a big SUV because I have 5 children and car pool others. I also drive the elderly and disabled to their doctor's appointments and help with Meals on Wheels.
SUV's are essential for SOME people.

Axel, that is such an old arguement. The money does not stay with the turnpike (to pay for maintenance, etc) it goes into a general fund for state spending.

in MWC sends proposal to BCS on Little Man on Campus
Right on, 16 teams are needed. Each conference champ is in. For bigger conferences like the SEC that has an East and West Divsion breakdown, then send the East and West winners. This leaves a small handful of at-large bids for the independent teams or for a conference team that just missed out based on BCS (or some similar ranking system). Ranking 1 through 16 tourney based on BCS.
The bottom line is this: each Division I team will have a shot of winning it all. No team will go undefeated and end up on the outside of a playoff system.
Most people around here don't take college football seriously because there is no playoff. Meanwhile NCAA hoop is all the rage during March. Hmmmmm I wonder why?

in House approves gas tax hike, leaves E-ZPass alone (March 5) on Nashua Telegraph
With a gas tax rate this high, they should be able to remove all the tolls! This is ridiculous! Some years ago a state study found that a 5 cent gas tax hike could pay to remove all tolls. How can they increase the tolls AND the gas tax!?!? How much longer are we going to take this?

Howard,
Rick's comments aside, you should not be proud of the fact that you smoke pot. You should not be using it as a recreational drug as it is illegal. The article was about medicinal uses.
I have seen first-hand what pot usage can do to people. It does not ruin everyone's lives, but my personal experience indicates that it can ruin your life.

Actually, I am indeed proud of the fact that I refuse to subvert to an ignorant government program. I flat out refuse the lies and falsehoods perpetuated by so-called government experts. The fix has been in on marijuana since William Randolph Hearst and Harry Anslinger combined forces.
I too have seen what 'pot usage' does to people. It relaxes them. It eases their discomfort. It gives them an apetite. It allows them to sleep.
Get off your high horse 'big dog'.
