Why didn't you just use the .NET framework with C#?
Thanks for Steve's blog. His article on the different programming languages was an awesome read.
It's always fun to read what you have to say on these different topics, keep it up!

Sorry about the CG1 projects. I think the biggest problem is that students don't really understand C/C++. If there was a second course in C/C++ I think students who do far better in these upper level classes using languages other than Java.
Do you see having a second course as being more helpful?
Props to you on the rest of the post. I found it amazingly informative and I'll make sure to keep your advice in mind if I ever get the chance to coop with Microsoft. (I would really like too!)
Noah you're extremely smart and I thank you for your insights, don't let the ignorant and the less intelligent bring you down.

Is the problem also a result of RIT accepting too many Computer Science majors who aren't prepared to problem solve? Or are the students too lazy to think for themselves?

I think it's time to ease up a bit, or have 2 C++ programming courses so that you don't hit them so hard with the big CS4 project.
We're expecting a lot out of them and I think theres problems with switching from java to C++ and there are problems with the conceptual solutions that you're asking them to produce. Granted your almost giving them the psuedo-code, however it doesn't mean anything if they can't understand it.

I'm surprised to hear that Microsoft struggles with good design; you'd think that all the talent would do something. Maybe they're hiring the wrong kind of talent?
Though even at my coop I found a lot of the procedures to not be complex, so I don't think it's just a Microsoft problem, I think it's a problem that runs through most of the industry. You need smart people, but you also need people who can look at the big picture and analyze the impact of a particular design.
I might take you up on the Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance coffee chat.
