Sounds very interesting. I will admit that most of what I know about the city and its history comes from Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon, but it still made me more interested in going there.

As for the mail-order thing, you are right, it is everywhere. Back when I was flying all the time around the turn of the century, I shared a seat-row with a woman with a Russian accent and a ring-binder of pictures and bios from http://special-lady.com/.

Good lord, I am the next comment after my first one on this post?!

Anyhow, I am reading "Death by Black Hole" by Neil deGrasse Tyson. In his chapter "The Information Trap", he mentions that , because the earth is an oblate spheroid, as Newton predicted, .3% wider at the equator, Mt. Chimborazo's summit in Ecuador is 1.33 miles further away from the Earth's center than any other point on the planet.

If there is a tourist-friendly assent you can do there, it might be a consideration before you rush off to the Galapagos or wherever.
