in What Happened to Wartime Sacrifice? on Art of Manliness
Actually I think complacency is what got us here. Back in October 12, 2000, when the USS Cole was attacked by terrorists, 17 sailors were killed. There was literally NOTHING done about it in regards to retaliation or any military action. It is probably the motivator for terrorists to carry out the September 11 attacks on the US.

Why didn't the American public get more rattled about the attack that killed 17 sailors? I'd have to say it wasn't sacrifice at that time, but a severe lack of focus on what is important.

in How To Shave Like Your Grandpa on Art of Manliness
Being able to shave "old school style" is a pretty nice skill to have as a bachelor. Whenever I spent a night at my girlfriends house, she would always be interested in standing in the bathroom doorway, watching me shave in the morning. This has happened with several women that I have dated, and I have to say, I'm in my 30's and have been married for less than 2 years, so I would think this would apply pretty well to today as well as back then.

Someone actually suggested Douglas Adams Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy? Really?

That can't be part of any essential mans library.

in Spokesman Admits McCain Broke Forum Rules on The Jed Report
Just another case of bad journalism at it's worse. I think we would all want to be alone so that we could get "pumped up" for a debate. I'm sure Obama does too. It's just human nature.

And naturally, ALL of the presidential candidates have secret service with them. They have in every election.

I just look at that thing and think, man, that is a lot of money to spend, and a lot more money to tear down and redo once this guy wants to sell his house.

These are all very awsome, but I'm surprised that they are from such old films. Maybe there are no new, worthwhile films?

in The Best Films That Never Won a Best Picture Oscar on Film School Rejects
Great list. When I read the title, I wondered particularly about Wizard of Oz vs Gone With the Wind. Any other year, Oz would have been hard to beat. Poor timing for such a classic film.

in Christopher Lloyd Goes Back to the Future Again on /Film
It's funny to look at this, when a lot of people thought he was so typecasted from the show TAXI that he would never had another job. As it ends up, he actually fell into his biggest gig yet.

I love the old series, I wish there was a 4th!

This is light humor that you just chuckle at (or shrug at) and go on. No harm done.

in That Was Then, This is Now II on dmiessler.com | grep understanding

I’ve had friends approach me the past few years, knowing I was tired of my career, suggesting that I would make a great teacher. I’ve always been pretty quick to be against it. Kids are very street smart these days. If I ever had a kid decide she was going to take revenge for a bad grade and make ugly accusations, my life and career would be over. Even if the kid admitted later in making it up, there would always be a shadow of a doubt, and there will always be people that think you’ve threatened them, paid them off, or done something to get them to change their story.

I can see where it is simply a lot more effective to never be in any position to be set up and accused of something.

Good list. It pretty well shows (mostly) that in the past 10 years, we've lost the ability to make a good Christmas movie.

Digital AND 3D? Man, that can make the movie theatre more like live theatre.

Seems that a firestorm has started. : )

When I heard about Barenaked Ladies on USB thumb drives, that was probably the most awsome of them all.

Any reason why you targeted Wordpress?

in 6 Steps To Getting Back Into The Blog Saddle on Instigator Blog
Great post!

I think writers block is probably the biggest thing that is on a bloggers mind, even beyond site maintenance and "how to make extra cash off of your blog".

New and creative content is the only thing that separates blogs out.

I've blogged a little here and there, but never could get anywhere with it. I'm hoping your ideas will actually get my site somewhere.

in 9 Signs the Online Job Market is Broken on Instigator Blog
As far as any experience that I've had, online job postings rarely work. I'm in IT, and typically I will see a posting on a site, and go after it, just to not get the job. Often I will be registered with a staffing service, and will get the same job I couldn't apply for directly 3 weeks later.

I've had the same job for the past 5 years, so fortunately, this hasn't been a problem for a while.
