All for fun.

Re: Another Reason for Home Schooling

Micah,
To clear up any confusion, I posted my comment before you had posted your second one. The blog does not show this, but when I was reading it I only saw your first comment.

To that point, and I maybe in error, it seemed like you were saying that because Shawn went to UH and we grew up in the middle class, that he might not have the proper perspective to comment on the situation in Portland, Maine.
Would that be true or am I off?

Secondly, I will admit and want to clear the record that at no time did you attack Shawn or his blog. That was an over-statement on my part. I am sorry. I mean it is not like you called him a "phony blogger" or anything like that.

Thirdly, I still don't understand how a luxury is a sacrifice, seems like they are still opposites.

Fourth, I don't understand what practical reasons lead us to hand out birth control. What about teaching kids to be abstinent, unless we are under the assumption that kids can't or won't be abstinent, but isn't that lowering the bar, something I thought schools weren't supposed to do. Won't your students be better off if you teach them that they are in control of their bodies, they can wait to have sex until they are married, they aren't animals, and actually won't they be better students when not having to deal with the emotional, physical, and cultural problems that come with sex before marriage. Handing out birth control, only encourages sex, making the problem worse. As if pregnancy was the only outcome of sex that effects students negatively. Seems like they're treating the symptoms not the problem. No surprise!

Lastly,
"There’s certainly nothing in the Christian faith that would suggest caring for my children while ignoring my neighbors is a good thing–in fact, Jesus would suggest the opposite."

Jesus would suggest ignoring your children to care for your neighbors, where's that at? What about Paul calling elders in the Church to be good managers of their homes as a proving ground that they can minister to others. And how does sending your kids to these schools help your neighbors. Can I not help a neighbor whose children do not go to the same schools as mine? Okay that's it.

I promise to never call you a liberal and I would never think of calling you a conservative. Congratulation on the "funniest comment of the week", I think it comes with a T-shirt. You should ask the management of this blog

Re: Another Reason for Home Schooling

"Jesus never says anything good about the family or family structures. I couldn't have been more than 4 or 5 at the time. I am sure that I helped out quite a bit as any 5 year old would have. Great memories! Definitely real trees and based on our childhood, I even have a hard time buying a tree that doesn't have a root ball and can't be re-planted.

You forgot to mention the time that you and I planted one of our old Christmas trees. I think you were home from your freshman year of college and I was just hitting my teen years, which would explain our lack of enthusiasm when we dug a 2 foot hole and never took the burlap bag off the tree. Of course the inevitable happened, and by early spring that tree was a nice brown hue...Priceless

Re: The Great Christmas Tree Debate

Wait, the part of the story I forgot was that after you went back to college Dad did notice the tree and made me pull the tree out and re-dig the hole. I "worked" for about an hour getting enough space so that the ball would be fully covered by dirt (still didn't know enough to take off the burlap covering). I netted about another 4 inches then what we had previously. Still the end is the same, dead tree and stupid sons.

Re: This Seems Like a Very Interesting Read

Shawn.
Its a good book. Its a pretty hard read at the same time. Not really a page turner. If you want one that might be slightly, and only slightly easier to read and understand, then check out John Edwards "Freedom of the Will". He tackles the same subject much like Luther did and is arguably the brightest mind that America had produced.

Re: This Seems Like a Very Interesting Read

Micah,
Real quick. I don't think anyone would doubt that Luther was very Roman Catholic. That was the only church. He never intended to to make Protestantism, but was trying to reform the RC Church. That didn't happen so we get protestantism.

I think Protestants take the Eucharist seriously, but obviously that is opinion and up for debate.

The book isn't as much about the doctrine of Justification, but about the "will", and whether it it truly free. Luther rightly and biblically asserts that the will is free, but is totally depraved and its nature is one of sin. Therefore, we are free to choose, but can't not choose anything contrary to our nature. Like a lion's nature is to eat meat. He won't eat a salad even though he has the freedom to do so. You have to change his nature.

Likewise, the human is in bondage to the sin nature. God first, yes first, has to change the nature before man can respond to God. The book is more about Calvinism vs. Arminianism than justification.

Packer in his the intro is talking more about how many Protestant denominations have no idea where their doctrine of the sovereignty of God come down and don't see it as a big deal. "Hey we are all Christians right? So does doctrine really matter?" I think is the attitudes that Packer is asserting most Protestants have. It is a attitude of apathy toward doctrine and an inability of most Protestants to explain why they believe what they believe, that Packer is commenting on in this intro. Many Baptists, EV-Frees, Methodist, etc. have no idea if they believe in the bulk of Reformed theology or in Arminianism et. al.

Again, Packer is talking about this one issue, the nature of the will, not all of Luther's theology. I think no one would tell you that Luther had it all right.

Lastly,
Micah you fell right into Shawn's hands. I suspect he was missing your blogging and contribution and has thrown out some theological bait to reel you in. I can't say much either, he got me too.

Re: Evolution Revisited

Just glad to see that you have made your way into the blogissphere, Katie.

Re: What Do They Mean By “Change”?

It is the same thing most Democrats and even some Republicans do, they try and take a neutral term and turn it into a virtue. Take for example the word "choice." For years many have been trying to prop that term up as a blessed freedom and liberty, but choice is not a virtue in and of itself. It is the choice that you make that is either virtuous or destructive, not your ability to choose. So goes with "change."

Re: What Do They Mean By “Change”?

Jo Ellen,
I think you might have just hit the nail on the head, and in case that term is too "manly", i.e. not Christ-like, let me say that you have "warmed the baby formula to its perfect temperature". Just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Anyway, avoiding all the many minefields throw out there by this thread and trying to get to back to the original poin, I think you have illustrated for us what democrats mean by change. For example, to quote you:

"I don’t know what change means to democrats, besides change in the way we are fighting this war, change in the way we do health care, change in the way we educate our children. All of this, I suspect, is what all candidates lay out when they talk about policy plans."

The, dare I say, genius of the Democratic nominees are that the way the use the word "change" allows their supporters to infer whatever they want. The above quotes from the candidates aren't talking about "policy" change, just "change." You, Jo Ellan, suspect that it means one thing while another supporter can suspect it means something totally different. It is a veritable buffet. So, if you are a teacher, change can mean more money for you, if you are a environmentalist, change can mean more restrictions on corporations, for PETA, change means legislative vegetarianism. Whatever you want someone to change, that's what it means right now. I suspect they use the term so loosely so that they can get the most support for it.

I am sure that once a nominee is named we will see in more detail what they mean by change and I suspect too that it will mean all the things you think it means, Jo Ellen.

As for all the other things in this thread all I can say is "Wow!"

Re: Bush Just Bought Me a New Car

Sadcox,
You have a job so the government can take a large part of the money you make. After all, isn't that what our incarnate God "set his face like flint" to accomplish, (i.e. death by capital punishment, i.e. salvation by capital punishment)?

In Matthew 5, I think Christ is talking to individuals about how they should deal with anger, not governments and about how they should restrain evil and protect their citizens. I don't think Bern's use of the word anger is appropriate because that word can mean many things to many people. Mainly, because people view anger as an emotional response, not one of rational. I would, however, agree with him that you can not have mercy, Bern's word is "caring", without judgment. Having mercy, in the first place, on someone implies that they have done something wrong that warrents your mercy. So if you are going to throw out an arguement for judgement, you are going to have to throw out the idea of mercy as well.

Also, I think that their are differences between what the Bible calls us to do as individuals and what it calls us to do in certain roles that we are to play. For example, I believe that I am called to turn the other cheek, and I will, but it also calls for me to protect my family. If someone strikes me, I will turn the other cheek. If someone strikes my wife, I will defend her. I don't think either of those two actions are anti-Christian.

Likewise, what we are asked to do as Christians and what role the government plays are different. Romans 13 I think would be a good example of that.

Okay, enough for today. Hope you are doing well in Middle TN. Tell the family we all said "hello" and if you see Keith Urban, or Tim McGraw tell them I said "hi".

Re: Why Does Quitting Your Job Bother Other People

3 reasons it bothers people that you quit your job:

1. We project upon the candidate that it was about his character that he took a community organizing job, but there could be several reasons he did it.

And if we use that argument for his character then, why not now? Would it not speak more to his character now to go back to being a community organizer than President of the United States.

If he did it once maybe will get lucky and he will do it again.

Re: This Week’s Gem

@Matt,

Frankly, I don't know. I don't assume it was because He is such a good person. Maybe he couldn't handle corporate law, maybe he knew that working with his friend Mr. Ayers, in the long run had a better chance of getting him elected to a place in the State of Federal Senate? I don't presume to know the answer to it. I just don understand why corporate law firms are seen as evil or at least less of a service than community organization. Not to mention, we don't know really what he did while working in South Chicago, Where are the records?

Again,My point is that what Obama hasn't done,i.e join a big corporate law firm, doesn't seem to me like presidential qualifications.

Osama Bin Laden Is a rich man too, yet he does a lot of "community organizing", does that speak to his character?

Now that's tongue in cheek of course. I am not comparing Obama and Osama, but being a "community organizer" doesn't directly relate to the character of a man.

Re: This Week’s Gem

Hyperbole, my friend.... you know like saying Jesus was a community organizer and Pilate was a governor

The point was community organizing does not necessarily speak to a man's character.

Re: This Election…Any Election…In Light of THE TRUTH

Thanks bro.
