I said to myself, "I didn't see any captcha when posting the comment". Turns out that the extremely popular Adblock plugin for Firefox had hidden the entire captcha section. Let's hope that problem gets resolved, or recaptcha may not catch on very fast.

Re: Why Can’t Ubuntu Install Adobe Flash Player Anymore?

tristan@tristan-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get remove –purge flashplugin-nonfree
[sudo] password for tristan:
Reading package lists... Sometimes you get the urge to stock-up in a certain area just to get it taken care of. The problem with that method is you are missing many other areas, and if you don't rotate then your investment can go to waste.

I recommend looking at it from a "survival time" point of view. How long can I be self-reliant? Simply by adding some water storage to your home will allow you to survive a week. What would it take to survive two weeks? A month? Two months? By slowly increasing your survival time, you can comfortably prepare without stressing and you will have a feeling of accomplishment as you reach each milestone.

Re: Starting the New Year – Rounding out Food Storage

Thanks for sharing.

How about water storage? Ogden had a 4-day water outage that showed me how bad things would be without water. No flushing toilets, no drinking water, no showers, no washed dishes. Most people have several days of food in the house without even thinking, but almost no one has enough water!

Here is what I am thinking about putting in my basement and rotating the water once a year with a hose and drain: 250 gallon indoor water tank

http://www.yourfoodstorage.com/store/503159/pro...

I will also have around 10 cases of bottled water that provide more portable water.

Regarding gasoline, I would like to hear more about storage, rotation, and location.

Re: Emergency home heat

Great post on a topic I have been thinking about recently. We may not realize just how cold our house would be without our primary heat source. I am happy to hear that you selected the exact same solution that I was leaning towards.

I need propane anyway for my BBQ, so why not buy a handful of tanks and store them in my shed? With a one-time purchase of around $300, I will have emergency heat (Big Buddy) and cooking (BBQ) capabilities thanks to propane (five 20-gallon tanks).

On a similar note, are you also storing gasoline? I know it is only rated for 3-months, but we all know it lasts for much longer (I have seen a lawn mower working on 3 year old gas). You can add fuel stabilizer to get 1 to 2 years of storage. I plan on getting five 5-gallon tanks for gas and using fuel stabilizer, then rotating the gas into my cars once a year. This extra fuel will help you make that emergency trip to a neighboring state, or to help you pickup needed supplies around town.

Re: Gardening resources (local and mail-order)

How are you watering your garden? I am planning on using two soaker hoses in my new garden. This should save on water usage.

Also, where do you step in your garden? Do you have set paths, or just make it up as you go?

Lastly, did you add any organic matter to your soil?

Thanks!

Tristan (new gardener)
