I like your questions - very helpful as a sieve before making any purchase.
I also like one of your other posts where you point out that cheap can be expensive in the long run.
I'm cultivated - put me in almost any store and somehow the thing I most desire will have a big price tag - I don't plan it that way - it's just what I love.
So, I'm working on your amortization theory - letting myself spend big on some purchases knowing I'll have/love the items for years - amortizing can be my friend (still have trouble parting with the cash, though!).

in What’s the best concert you ever attended? on Carrie and Danielle
Oooooo....concert memories! Long after the Deadheads were...well.....over...totally over...., I saw them in Eugene, Oregon with a group of friends.
Here's the scence: A hot steamy night, an "exotic" city for a bunch of Canadian kids, a few illegal drugs, an exit out the wrong door and shazzam - we ended up at the Dead afterparty with Ken Kesey, the Merry Pranksters and the whole darn band. Memorable - oh yes!

Thanks, Pearl. I love Wallace Stegner, too. So grateful to my first year university literature prof for including Angle of Repose on our reading list - such a great novel!

Oh favourites - that's a tough one - so many. But I do love Wally Lamb's "I Know This Much is True".
Read his beautiful ending:
"I am not a smart man, particularly, but one day, at long last, I stumbled from the dark wood of my own, and my family's and my country's past, holding in my hands these truths: that love grows from the rich loam of forgiveness; that mongrels make good dogs; that the evidence of God exists in the roundness of things. This much, at lest, I've figured out. I know this much is true."

Jennifer - thank you for your lovely message. And thank you for the incredible work you do - we were lucky to have a large support team of professionals and family - you are the leader and integral support for that team when staying at home just isn't an option or there are few family and friends.
It was the saddest day of my life, and I felt so blessed to be able to give back even a fraction of the care my lovely Mom gave me throughout my life.

My best work was working with my brother/sisters and my Dad to help my Mom die peacefully at home in her own bed, surrounded by love.

in What do you need to let go of? on Carrie and Danielle
Thanks, Danielle. I need to let go of judgement and wanting other people to change (and be more like me?)
Especially my sister - she has a beautiful house crammed from basement to attic with beautiful things that are crying out for room to breathe - and she still collects more. It drives me crazy.
So I am letting go off judgement and replace it with compassion.

in What’s a great wedding gift to give? on Carrie and Danielle
For 'West Coasters', we like to give something that speaks of this beautiful place:
1. Silver Haida carved salad spoons - objects of art that get used often
or if the couple is older and already has (at least) 2 households worth of stuff, we give:
2. A wonderful take-out picnic and tickets to Bard on the Beach.
I love Danielle's idea of framing the wedding invitation - we have a wedding to go to in August so may just expand our repertoire.

in What’s your favourite inspirational quote? on Carrie and Danielle
Last night after posting a quote I keep on my fridge, I realized that there are so many others - mostly poetry - that inspire me.
I particularly love this poem from Antonio Machado from a book aptly titled "Ten Poems that Will Change Your Life" - it speaks to the power of forgiveness and so much more.
Last Night As I Was Sleeping
Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that a spring was breaking
out in my heart.
I said: Along which secret aqueduct,
Oh water, are you coming to me,
water of a new life
that I have never drunk?
Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that I had a beehive
here inside my heart.
And the golden bees
were making white combs
and sweet honey
from my old failures.
Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that a fiery sun was giving
light inside my heart.
It was fiery because I felt
warmth as from a hearth,
and sun because it gave light
and brought tears to my eyes.
Last night as I slept,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that it was God I had
here inside my heart.
Translation from Spanish by Robert Bly - love it, love it, love it!

Thank you for your daily posts - I "tune in" whenever I can and find myself pondering the questions last thing before I go to sleep!
I do have a question though - when (and where on the site) will we be able to access the Ask C&D: Advice column to the rescue?
Summer - ain't it grand!

Actually, as much as I love this quote, Rebecca Walker didn't write it.
I posted this to your blog - but I didn't write it either (although I wish I had) - it was written by Hara Estroff Marano and was published in Psychology Today (Psyched for Success, 20 November 2003)

in What will you say no to this week? on Carrie and Danielle
I'm saying "no" to guilt over the impossibility of making decisions at work that make everybody happy.
I will make hard decisions based on compassion, consultation and ethical reasoning, I will explain those choices, and then I will let go of guilt and feeling responsible for other people's emotions & reactions.

Oh, yes! Please sign up for the cell phone etiquette class coming soon (I hope) to a neighbourhood near you.
But actually, when you think about it, cell phone etiquette falls in the big arena of respect - respecting the rights of others to enjoy public group spaces - the bus, the bookstore, the library - without having to listen to you chat.
