Glad you got the install figured out.

AFP and BFD are the most important tools listed. A server needs a firewall. You will be amazed at how many times your server gets attacked automatically. By having a secure ssh password and bfd installed you can avoid a ton of hassle of being attacked.

If you don't know networking then working with a firewall can be a bit of a hassle. The hardest portion of the install is the config file. You need to know what ports you need open and which to be closed. The link to webhostgear explains that fairl clearly.

vnstat worked right out of the box for me on (mt). However, I run a empty server from them. I don't have a control panel and no preinstalled software.

I think I know what error you are receiving though. All you need to do is run the command for the first time with admin rights. It may still show some sort of error, but in there it will create the database log.

I've removed Billy's comment due to it being a personal attack. There is no need for personal attacks when it comes to dealing with technology.

Sorry fanboys, but the iPhone sucks as a phone. The service on the phone is horrible. Four guys I work with all have the iPhone and I have the BlackBerry Curve (Nokia N95 before that). I get wonderful service in all parts of Las Vegas and they drop calls all over the place.

The issue is not with ATT, it is with the iPhone. It is a first gen phone, it sucks. It will do wonderful things for the phone market, but this one truly does suck.

Great video. It looks like those kids thought you were nuts though. Then again, aren't we all?

in Love It Or Hate It? - TWiT 134 on LOL: Life of Leo
Right after the audible pick I got bored and went to do something else. The content for me was just not interesting. Compared to last weeks TWiT this one was utterly boring. I do not have any direct feedback on what was wrong with it, I just found it to be dull.

I switched for various reasons. The first is what I consider boredom. I grew bored with s9y the development seemed to stagnate as the main developer, Garvin, was writing a book on the product.

I've been trying to get functionality in some plugins for s9y for a long time they already exist in WP. Sometimes it felt like pulling teeth to get a new plugin. I was almost going to offer money to get a plugin created.

I looked at my options and it was easier for me just to switch to a platform that I know already supports what I am looking for.

The point that drived home the fact for me was that Automattic made $29.9mil in series b financing. With that kind of backing it was time for me to take another look at it. They fixed all of the issues I had in the past and made it even easier to use.

in Analog TV Channels Going Dark, Now What? on Zac Garrett
It is the FCC pushing to remove the analog signals. The reason is you can fit something like 6 digital channels in a single analog frequency.

The only people affected by this change are the ones who receive over the air TV. If you have a cable box or use satellite then you have nothing to worry about.

in Disable URL Search in Location Bar of Firefox 3 on Zac Garrett
The problem is it doesn't work. They've basically added a feature that no one requested and is just a problem to the people who actually use the address bar. I've stopped running the nightly builds as it is unusable to me.

in Firefox 3 Awesome Bar - Still a Piece of Junk on Zac Garrett
I've installed the latest nightly build (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9b4pre) Gecko/2008021804 Minefield/3.0b4pre ID:2008021804) and tested these settings. Nothing.

I am still getting horrible results when I start to type a domain in. When I change browser.urlbar.maxRichResults to 0 it removes the entire history in the URL bar. By this I mean nothing drops down. Below you will find a screenshot of my results when I type in "g".

http://zacgarrett.com/uploads/2008/02/ff3_bar_r...

It is kind of hard to explain why something this screwed up is still in the build. To get decent results I have to type in at least 3 characters. I believe this is due to using SQLite. In SQL it is harder to match items with a little bit of text.

Note to self: add more space between comments; they are hard to read at the moment.

That option has actually been removed from the latest versions of ff3. As of the time of writing this the nightly version of Firefox3 does not support these options in about:config. They have been removed.

I did try to open up the lines of communications about this issue by posting in the mozillazine forums. All I ended up getting was 7 pages of people mostly complaining.

Mozilla no longer listens to end users. They act like they do, but end up doing what they believe is best in the first place. They are quite a bit like Apple in that way.

After that first day when Asa replied to this post a few times I have not heard back. I emailed him a few times on that day and he stated that he would get back to me. I emailed him a few days ago just to see if he figured anything out, silence. I understand being busy, but they are saying FF3 is going to be out rather quickly and this huge mess is still in the latest version.

in Why Desktop Linux Will Never be Mainstream on Zac Garrett
Bah, with my screwup a few weeks back all of the old comments are gone.

Anyway... I do run Linux on the server and I do love the power. This server runs a RedHat based distro (CentOS to be precise) and I do everything via the command line. The issue I have with linux is the conversion to the desktop; its just not as easy to use as the two main OSs -- Windows and OS X.

Xorg needs to be replaced. It is a horrible design and poorly implemented. People need to realize that its outdated and is keeping many people from enjoying *NIX.

It has actually be totally removed in the latest nightly builds. Changing that value does not do anything to the results. They have made it fairly clear that they do not want to allow the old URL bar format without quite a bit of work.

At this point I am totally unexcited about FF3 as the theme sucks by default on Windows (looks okay on OS X) and if you have a non-brand new profile your results are pretty much horrible.

in Rebuttle: What Linux can do that Windows and OS X can’t on Zac Garrett
Actually, by default in Ubuntu you do have a software manager that makes software management quite easy. http://www.nongnu.org/synaptic/

It is actually easier to install software in Ubuntu than on Windows. This is due to the fact that you do not have to go out and search for the software, it is all in one easy to use location.

The problem with this is that how many non-geeks actually install software? Most of the people I work with are very non-technical and never install software. If they want something installed they have no idea what to do and usually and just have me do it.

in Leopard Network Speed on Zac Garrett
I change my DNS provider about monthly. I normally prefer to have multiple DNS servers so if one dies you still have many more backups. Having 3 DNS servers is almost always the recommended setting for servers, just so you always have a working server.

The problem with Leopard is that if you have more than two DNS servers your entire network goes at a crawling pace. By limiting the servers to only two (opendns in my case) you go back to zippy speeds.

By setting the DNS servers on your router you can have as many as you would like (or it supports) as you will only have one on your local machine, the router.

Yeah, fanboys of all camps are just plain scary. The definition of a fanboy to me is someone who thinks that a company can not do anything wrong. For example, someone saying that Vista is the best OS ever released without some sort of disclaimer.

"In fact, apparently you can even run KDE under Cygwin."
I actually did run KDE in cygwin many a moons ago before I switched over to Linux on my old laptop. If I remember correctly it was the fall of 2003 because I was taking a Cisco networking class.

Today for most of my Linux needs I switch on a virtual machine and get the job done. For me I do not see the need to have a dedicated desktop for Linux as nearly everything I want to do can be done elsewhere.

The very best part of Linux in my opinion is the sheer number of developers creating wonderful free software. Developers love Linux. In the security arena there are many pieces of software that will only work on a dedicated Linux box. Kistmet is one example. Someone did create Kismac, but the original is far superior.

Another thing that I like about Linux is servers. I would rather sit in the command line any day than try to figure out IIS's screwed up GUI options. Tweaking settings in a config file is just far easier, at least for me.

So, where do I see Linux in the future? The same place it is right now; on the server and a select few desktops. There is no need for Linux to explode on the desktop market, it is just too complex for the average computer user. Just look at my dad, it took me about 30 minutes on the phone to explain how to install Firefox on OS X. (a process which entails dragging Firefox.app into the Applications folder and then running it from there)

The one thing that almost all Linux users forget is actual end users.

It is true that #11 isn't exactly 100% accurate. According to the devel docs from Apple it should be. As with any guideline it is not followed 100% of the time, which is why working with MS software on OS X is just plain wrong.

I've yet to find a valid reason why you have to actually install MS Office instead of just dragging the app into the Applications folder. If I remember correctly you have to install Pages in the same way, so I must be missing something in there.

One small problem with that, I've got ff3 latest nightly build on 3 computers. Each one of them has the same issue. There is definitely something wrong with the algorithm.

I am running the latest build - Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9b3pre) Gecko/2008013104 Minefield/3.0b3pre ID:2008013104

Upgraded to the latest nightly version via the firefox auto updates. I got a new theme for Windows yesterday before posting and upgraded again today. I am still getting results with www when I hit just "w".

For me the real solution would be to create a checkbox in the options to use just URLs. I don't understand why any power user would want to search for the title of a website. Often this is the last thing that comes to mind when I try to find a site I frequent. If I wanted to search for something I would punch it into google.

The problem with that theme is that it was painful to read. As much as I like dark themes they can be difficult to read. The bigger the screen and resolution the harder it is to read the dark themes.

Wow, I might actually think about getting an iPhone sometime after February. Right now the N95 does the trick.

Now if they would get the iPhone off of Edge I would be totally sold.

I have to agree; the term podcast is irrelevant to what you are other online producers create. What you guys do is far superior to anything done on the large TV and Radio networks.

You create online media that should be called as they are, great content.

Can we now get rid of that saying at the beginning of your shows about netcasts; it drives me crazy! haha
