Interesting! I didn't realize he was touring with a band again. My wife and I saw him solo, twice in April (in VA and NYC), and both shows were as awesome as you report. I would have happily searched him out again in a solo show, but I'd also love to see him with a full band.

So true. The current explosion seems to be due to the recent sophistication in Image spam. The fact that they can morph the image signature without changing the message that they are sending is their "breakthrough".

What amazes me is that some of the things that they promote could _ever_ be clicked on by _anyone_, even _accidentally_. Simply mind boggling...

Gerry, I had not heard of Truphone, thanks for the pointer. The fact that they support SIP natively, and use Asterisk on the back-end is very cool, and I'm sure that it will have some life soon (if the Telcos don't kill them in some way).

At the moment, I'm a Sprint guy with a Treo 700p, so it might be a while before Truphone supports me, but I'd be an early adopter when it's available, I'm sure :-)

OK, this is cool too, thanks Gerry. I'm not jumping over just yet, but I'm going to think about it some, and possibly even throw in an experiment or two.

Conceptually, three things bother me about Gmail as my main email provider:

1) The (remote) possibility that I'll be hostage to Google at some point in the future, in some (as yet) unknown way. I know this sounds paranoid, but it has to cost them a bloody fortune to provide this service, and the day may come when they literally _have_ to monetize it, or make it go away...

2) I am amazed at how many people in the above posting claim zero false positives. It might be true, but it seemed absurd to me. In fact, my bet is that they just don't care about the "few" good mails that get tossed with the spam. For example, for a while, it seemed that nearly every mail sent from one of "zope.com" addresses was getting sent to spam on nearly _every_ gmail receiving account. So, somehow zope.com was on some blacklist, etc. Many of the recipients didn't notice, until we tracked them down...

3) I'm fond of my domain. I know I can use my domain with Google, but IIUC, it costs money, and again, repeating point #1, that price might be reasonable today, but at some point, become less so, and it gets harder and harder to switch, etc.

Still, some of the ideas are pretty cool, and worth investigating. If I have any meaningful results to report in the future, I'll post them.

Seriously, I was one of the earliest NeXT adopters, and was a cult-leader in promoting it. Given that there aren't that many cool (software) features in the current Mac that weren't available 15 years ago!!! on the NeXT, I understand and appreciate what I'm missing.

What I tell people who know me well, and I'm only 1/2 joking, is that if I buy a Mac tomorrow, in a year, Steve Jobs will declare the Mac a dead platform, and the rest of you will all be screwed ;-)

So, for all you Mac lovers out there, I'm avoiding it as a favor to you! :-)

Well, Lois is a Country music fanatic, and channel 11 would almost be worth the entire XM radio for us alone. ;-)

That said, I love comedy, and channel 151 (the clean stuff), and 150 (the dirty stuff) is also a real treat on occasion. We also listen to news (which can be hard to find on regular radio on I95) and traffic.

Now that I listen online, I've discovered that I'm crazy about their Bluegrass channel, and the Classical one as well (14 and 110).
Finally, I don't know about the sleaze factor, though I don't doubt it. This is a gift, and I don't pay for the service, and our friends just renewed us for another 2 years, so they aren't trying to get out of it either. ;-)

Sounds cool. For the past 5 years, we host a July 4th party on our deck in NYC where we see the Macy's fireworks display live. It's pretty awesome. You've seen the deck, but you have to imagine the fireworks live. ;-)

They are starting to construct a building in the distance that may obscure our view when it's completed. If that happens, we won't want to be in NYC on the 4th, and might check out the festival that year. ;-)

I truly appreciate the response. First, I am very embarrassed at the incorrect names, since I've previously written about them and got them correct. I will correct them in the original post right after sending this reply.

It's interesting to hear that Julia is sick. I can believe it, as you could hear the strain in her voice. That said, her YouTube videos (at least three that I watched) were no more impressive, so I will have to be skeptical that it's just because she's sick.

As for "there is actually no right or wrong", we'll have to respectfully disagree. For me, this isn't an individual performance, but something that a Director is supposed to be directing. If it were up to me, and it's not, I'd be directing it the way it was originally produced. :-)

Thanks Vickie, we definitely agree on how awesome Wicked is. To quote myself, "It is far and away our favorite show of all time on Broadway". :-)

I purposely didn't name the understudy for two reasons:

1) I didn't want to hurt her feelings should it ever come to her attention.

2) I didn't want to spread her name as being associated with Wicked either.

I know that many people will consider that inconsistent with me naming Julia and Kendra. First, they are the leads, and given that I date my blog, only a fool wouldn't know who they were. But, more importantly, there is nothing that I can say that will harm their career in any way, and I didn't think either was awful, so there was a qualitative difference to my comments as well.

The understudy I was talking about is not the person you saw. ;-)

I'm glad you liked your understudy. As I wrote a week ago, we saw an understudy in the female lead in Spamalot, and she was spectacular. I'm not against understudies as a rule, just when they can't perform the role as intended.

Finally, to answer your question about where we saw it. Yes, all five times were in NYC. I sat in the left orchestra once, center orchestra twice (once close once way back), right orchestra way back once (that was the first time, and the most magical!), and once in the balcony.

We saw Eden Espinosa twice (simply brilliant), the understudy once, Anna Gasteyer once (she was wonderful as well!) and Julia once. In the Glinda role, we saw Kate Reinders 4 times (she's amazing) and Kendra once.

I would definitely be up for seeing Wicked in another location, and if I ever found myself in LA, I'd love to see Eden again (if she's still doing it there).

Hi Tom! I'm not sure about Tivo, but it wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't a marriage made in heaven. I'm sure you have to change the channels via the IR type stuff, but the original Tivos had to do that anyway.

Yesterday was the first day that I got to actually watch the FIOS TV stuff. So far, so good. I did get their DVR as well, and it works fine. Unfortunately, only an 80GB hard drive, so it can't store much. My DirecTV DVR has 250GB of disk, and that sometimes feels a little small to me, given how our travel schedule. ;-)

As for the BBQ, we really need to get it on the schedule, before the snow sets in! :-)

OK, here I am again, commenting on my own posts. I may have to find a better way to accomplish this...

First, I meant to say that they didn't play One Voice during the show, and we were surprised and disappointed. But, I said to Lois that there was no way they wouldn't sing it during the encore.

When they came out for the encore, they sang an a cappella song (beautiful), so we got really nervous that this would be the end.

Thankfully, after a few seconds, they said: "Hey, we'll play one more!". Of course, thankfully, that one more was One Voice. What a tasty way to end the evening.

The only other thing I wanted to mention was that we got out at 9:30pm, which made the concert 2:15, but that included a 20-25 intermission. Still, a nice length. We were back in the hotel at 11pm, which was also nice.

Basically, I've used the NC in planes (many, many times), and on rare occasions at home, mostly if Lois was watching TV, or on the phone. I never really had any problems with them (including three different pairs of Sony's), so I suspect that you had a bad pair!

That said, I am shocked at how poor the Bose are (not at NC, which they do well!, but at delivering a nice sound), so I would likely go for some of the lower-end models that I've read reviews of (under $100), if I were buying new NC headphones.

That makes a lot of sense! Even without NC, some people wildly prefer over-the-ear, others on-the-ear, etc., not always just because of comfort on the ear, sometimes because of pressure, etc.

I definitely like the album, and I think he's amazing, so we're not disagreeing there. I just find some other "compositions" more interesting, at least when considering the entire album.

I am interested in hearing more of him, so I'll check out Acoustic Sketches.

Also, I never heard of Michael Hedges and Kaki King, so I have some more research to do now. :-)

Mudflap, thanks for the comment. I see that you posted directly to Wordpress, which means that "Disqus" (the system I've been using for commenting) must be down. That's why none of the other comments are currently visible.

I'm considering switching back to native WP, as Disqus isn't progressing as fast as I'd have liked... :-(

I just realized that I could relatively easily fix the problem of having lost the past Disqus comments in this thread.

It's a "cheat", in that it won't have them indexed by search engines, but at least anyone who cares to read more comments on this post can easily do so...

Thank you so much! I felt terrible that I didn't remember the names (I'm getting older) and that I couldn't easily find them. As I mentioned in the post, they were all great, and Kentric Morris was simply amazing!

As for the acoustics, they were wonderful! They were wonderful for the Al Jarreau set as well.

I've been to the Beacon now four times in the past 13 months. The Dave Koz show was the only one with bad acoustics, so I'm blaming it entirely on the sound board / sound person.

The Allman Brothers Band was perfect. Alison Krauss and Union Station was excellent, with the sole exception of her microphone, which on occasion made her a little too loud relative to the band, when she powered through some high notes.

Thanks again for taking the time to let me (and everyone else!) know the names of these wonderful and talented musicians!

Thanks Alan. I am a long-time Grisman fan (we have tickets to see him next month!) and a life-long Garcia/Dead fan, so that one sounds like a must have. I'm intrigued by the other one as well, so I'll check that out too. Thanks again.

Interesting. When I got my copy of Acousticity, I knew I'd be a life-long Grisman fan. As opposed to you, I also really love horn sections though. :-)
