The USB port is supposedly provided for servicing the unit.

It's tough to decide whether the purchase was truly worth it without comparing it to a competing product. Without having anything else to compare to, and pretending that nothing else does exist, yes.. I think the purchase was great. The other route that I considered was an additional Mini to hookup as a media center. I'm a little disappointed in that the included hardrive is already full with about 60% of my library still residing on my computer. What this essentially means is that in order to watch content on any one of the computers, I'll need to manually browse different sources and stream content. It would have been nice if Apple included a way to add an external drive to the unit. I'm wondering if it is possible to run off an iTunes library connected to the Airport Base Station. Hook a 500GB HD to the router and have the Apple TV stream that.

I just picked one up today. I didn't plan on it. Complete impulse purchase as I watched 8 customers in line at the local Apple Store waiting to purchase one.
I am completely amazed at the ease and simplicity of setting one of these devices up.

Hmm.. Do you need the CMD+Option+Control+8 trick to invert the colors on your screen? Great for days when you're running low on battery and want to turn your display all the way down while still being able to see during the day.

Congrats indeed. Your transition seemed to go a lot faster than mine when I did it - especially the DNS bologna.

in Under Renovation? on I Bought a Mac
One of the greatest issues that MT suffered early on that I vividly remember was up time and MySQL database connection errors. What MT experienced were growing pains as large sites saw the GS as an oppotunity to save money. On paper, GS is an INCREDIBLE deal. Even now more so than ever as improvements have been added. Keep in mind that MT was attempting to offer a service to customers at a price hard to beat. Check out this post as an example of what customers experienced. My understanding of the issues was explained with this comment.
All-in-all, the GS is a new service, new technology for MT, and something that is continually receiving improvements based on customer feedback.
Should you be worried still? That's difficult to tell. I haven't heard of any recent developments that have forced site admins to pull their hair out about. Hosting is one of those tricky things that you can say something like "you get what you pay for" but may still find yourself looking at a website that doesn't load. There are no perfect hosts, but there are great overall customer experiences.
If you're someone looking for complete control over you site (root access), consider moving to a Dedicated Virtaul 3.0 (DV). That's what I use and I took a massive hit from Engadget, Apple Insdier, TUAW, and Digg all in the same day and the site loaded like normal. I've gotten to the point that if my site isn't loading properly, it's probably because I accidentally broke something myself.

Good luck with the move. Who were you hosting with and what made you decide to go with Mosso?

in Preventative Maintenance for Your Mac on I Bought a Mac
Tedious work trying to make sure that your Mac stays in tip top shape. Personally, I open Onyx and let it run all the maintenance scripts necessary on a semi-regular basis - about every two weeks.

in Using Spotlight in OS X on I Bought a Mac
Highly recommended that users take the time to familiarize themselves with Quicksilver which has a great tagging plugin ensuring that your files will surely be found during your next query using Spotlight.

in Widgets in OS X Leopard on I Bought a Mac
All too often people discover or come to the realization that widgets carry little value in comparison to how they're marketed by Apple. Users realize that every widget they run is a little more memory they lose from the system. At least, that's what educated users realize.
Although I do agree that widgets can be bloated, the Dashboard - for myself - has proven to be very helpful by providing work related information that I would rather have continually updated in the background. Little things like current time for the rest of my team (international members) using the clock widget, special keyboard characters with the CharacterPal widget, and 37signals related widgets for staying on top of tasks.
What Apple needs to do is actively educate their users of the disadvantages of loading multiple widgets as far as system performance. Those smooth ripple transitions while running dozens of widgets (with the basic Safari, Mail, iTunes apps), in reality, is only capable on a machine with a noticeable RAM upgrade.

Safari users get the most out of this app thanks to the convenient CMD + \ keyboard shortcut for filling login forms (assuming you've added them to the database).

in Apple’s Mighty Mouse on I Bought a Mac
As much as I did enjoy the Bluetooth Mighty Mouse (wired and bluetooth), I can't ever imagine going back to them after having purchased a Logitech MX Revolution. Definitely check one out if you have a chance to. Keep an eye out on deals sites which often feature the mouse at a fraction of what it normally retails for. If you do end up giving the mouse a try, do not install the LCC software that comes bundled with it. It sucks (for lack of better words). Check out SteerMouse instead.
