in Education: A Cul-de-Sac? on Sui Generis
Hi Joanna,
Thanks. Yep. It's working out so far, but the real test would be when I go out to get a job, I guess. But it's been a great journey for me. =). Hope things are working out well for your son as well.

Hm. In what way does white symbolise death?
And well, it's about knowing when to quit. Yes winning isn't everything, in the sense that if you fail, it isn't the end of the world. If you fail, you can learn from it and move on. But it doesn't mean that you should enter a game without aiming to win. And there comes a point where you need to quit in order to focus on what you can succeed at.
For more information on the value of quitting, you can read The Dip by Seth Godin.

Thanks for the advice. =). It's easier said than done, I suppose. But it's still good advice.

You're welcome. =).
Yep. I think Richard Branson is a great example of how you can succeed without being (too) ruthless.
Oh, and I don't recall seeing you here before (or maybe my memory is failing me, if so, my apologies). So welcome, and I hope you like my blog. =)

Haha. Kinda expected your cringe. =P.
But um, yeah. When A is moving, time in B seems to move slower to A. So if there's the same two events, if A is moving, the time between the two events would seem shorter to A.

Lihsia: Firstly, well, I think "doing what we like" can be sorta considered part of the relaxation, but I do agree.
Secondly, and more importantly, I do agree, if only slightly, with what you say. And I think that's where the teachers/facilitators should come in. At this age, it shouldn't be that competitive, that's the whole point. And it's quite sad if it is.

Thanks, glad you like the post.
I think the main thing about the teachers is you'll need teachers who are really passionate about developing the students. And who are willing to give the students the freedom to explore. But that should be the case no matter what, shouldn't it?
And I agree, I think there's too much emphasis on passing standardized tests that students aren't given opportunities to try out new things.

Peter: Yeah, I'm thinking of checking out "Made to Stick". Haven't read it yet, but heard good things about it, and it sounds really interesting. I've got a lot of books I want to read, though, so not sure when I'll get to that.
Tom: Yeah, and that's one of the failures of the formal education system, in my opinion.

in Doing "what’s expected"? | Sui Generis on Sui Generis
Firstly, then why are you still here if you don't think there's anything worth reading. Nobody's forcing you to come back. And as to why you should read it, maybe so that you can know what you're talking about before making senseless attacks.
Secondly, there's a big difference between "saying that we should not just do what is expected of us" and "COMPLAINING that YOU have to do what is expected of you".
