"What writing resources do YOU use?"
not enough of the human kind. i toil along by myself, convinced that i'll eventually discover the right way. there's certainly a time for this, but i would benefit from bringing in more resources.

in 3 Christmas Gift Themes on GoodWordEditing.com
we've tried for two years now to alter our family tradition. presently everyone buys for everyone, and i have:
a wife and two kids,
one sister-in-law and her daughter,
two sets of parents and my biological dad,
five sisters and two brothers-in-law,
and five nieces.
and we travel with gifts.
it was somewhat manageable back in the day, but we've grown quickly in the last few years. so far, alternate plans have been trumped for one reason or another. however, we (my wife and i) are putting our stockinged feet down and demanding change for next year. we have a couple of plans in the making, and i'm glad for a bit of inspiration here this morning, marcus.
merry christmas!

Thanks for Dave's blog link. His new book title made me laugh and I had to go see what else he has to say.

Re: the dinner metaphor, Marcus, I remember when my wife and I went to a certain couple's house for the first time. They were friendly, created good atmosphere and made us feel welcomed and comfortable...until dinner. The husband had a "great" family recipe for grilled chicken and we - being grilled chicken fans - were excited about a new entree.
In came the aluminum foil-wrapped packets from the porch grill. But out came my surprise when I opened it and took the first bite. It was marinated and still floating in Aunt Jemina's pancake syrup.
I took one bite and gagged (as discreetly as possible). It was my teary eyes afterward that betrayed me and forced a confession.

I would rather watch a movie with excellent characters and no plot than one with a great plot and weak characters. Maybe it's because I can see characters better than I can see plot.
It's kind of like going to someone's house for dinner. I'd rather be with excellent hosts who make nasty food than to eat a great meal made by lousy hosts.

in The Faith of Barack Obama… Is Pretty Solid on GoodWordEditing.com
Nice review, Marcus. My wife and I enjoyed his Denver speech last night. We're traditionally Republican but vote for who's most qualified. Haven't decided yet for this election, but voting for Obama might get me banned from the family. Many of them have written him off and I think it's due to these questions surrounding his faith. We (I'm guilty, too) seem quick to play God and judge others' soul-standing.
I hope we don't pay for this too dearly when the time comes.

Marcus, will you be my dad? I want a tree house like that, too! (Cue slight whining and stomping of feet.)

Welcome back, Marcus. And way to re-enter the blog world. :)
I think I've been riding the fence on this one for a while now. A few members of my family loved the Creation Museum and the movie, Expelled, but I feel so ignorant about any position that I hesitate to even ask what they liked about these.
I am, however, quite comfortable accepting whatever God did (unless I came from custard, which makes me gag). Six or six million, or maybe even something so radical that Moses couldn't bear to repeat, I trust that God could do it, and I'll revere Him all the same.

in Do We Really Want Our President on Twitter? on GoodWordEditing.com
Does he really want that much input? My daughters don't even want that much input. They ask for help or suggestions, but they certainly don't enjoy being micro-managed.
I like having a say in where our country is going and welcome opportunities to voice my opinion, but this seems more like a wooing of the crowd, or at least a way for Obama to avoid being the lightening rod Bush has been.
Regarding work, I wouldn't want this to be part of MY job description.

Sam, Merry Christmas to you too! And thanks for dropping by and
commenting. You've got a great blog, friend. I'm glad the idea here
inspires you.
On a related note, because of our travel plans this year, our first
present came this morning--Frankincense. We got our oldest Caspian and
Gifts (by Ursula K. LeGuin). We got our youngest <a

Anything.
But LeGuin isn't Christian, you might say. Exactly. We'll read the
book together, find the common grace in it together, and talk about
how it may differ from the specific grace of Jesus.
