Capitalism is GREAT if it is supported by a respectable and accountable court system to enforce laws and to resolve disputes, and if the actors in the system are themselves accountable. The only way human beings have learned to hold people accountable is to have regulations/laws that can be timely enforced by some governing authority. It has to paint the double yellow lines on the highways and hire and control the police, figuratively and actually. If you don't consider such government enforced accountability a problem, then I'm with you. Otherwise, you are whistling in the dark. There are about one fifth to one third of folks who don't give a fig for anyone but themselves and will violate laws and worse to get their way if they think they can get away with it. Ask anyone who studies people. This is too large a group to leave to their own devices when it comes to business practices. Otherwise you simply have Adam Smith's invisible hand showing us its middle finger. The government set the table with the Fed and keeping rates too low for too long, but the Federal Government impeded state mortgage regulation enforcement in the recent mortgage fiasco. The reason they picked corn-ethanol is because it could help them get votes from farm states. That's a failure to be accountable to the whole system, which is part of the problem, but they way you appear to be viewing it you would toss out government entirely simply because you don't want to spend the time needed to supervise it.

I also believe that people are smarter when they work together. Government was supposed to be something that facilitated that greater intelligence and larger successful activities than individuals could do by themselves. It has worked in the past. I don't know if you realize that the US government enabled cross national railroads and interstate highways, took men to the moon and enabled the creation of the first atomic weapons, and created the potential for the backbone of the internet. Possibly in your view these were terrible things. These things could not have been done without the government setting the table and providing funding. At least not most of it in my lifetime.

I believe that this story has parallels in every government agency. The appointment process needs to be reconfigured and accountability to the people needs to be instituted. Government needs to happen in the open. Agency heads should go to jail for using government property for partisan events. There are laws on the books and we need an attorney general who will start to enforce them or he should be impeached for not doing so. Like yesterday.

By kneecapping domestic refining capacity, all that will happen is that capacity will be moved out of the country. Unless Merchant imagines a situation of government controlled energy rationing, the demand will not decrease one iota.

Canada is the single largest foreign supplier of oil and gas to the US, and we have some nice, tastey sources for you, including our oilsands supplies. As a Canadian who makes his living in oil and gas, people like Brian Merchant are my best buddy.

A good freezer can be used in a very efficient way. See the Rocky Mountain Institute for details. Freezing food can reduce spoilage, you can freeze locally-produced fruit n vegs in the summer to eat them in the winter...

Best of all, as you remove stuff in the winter, you can replace it with ice you made in your back yard, which improves performance by increasing thermal inertia...

My freezer seems much more efficient than the supermarkets', with their big glass doors that never shut properly. Or worse: does your store use the open-chest ones? Both also require the supermarket to turn up the heating, half the year...

Also, check the package...where was your ice cream made? Have you calculated the impact of transporting your ice-cream half-way across the country in a freezer car?

Does your ice cream warm up at all, on your way back from the store? Imagine the amount of heat transfered from my -2C ice cream as I walk the 15 mins home from the store, on a 30C day?

With this ball, I can use locally-produced organic cream, honey, or maple syrup (glucose syrup for me!) and the raspberries I just picked in my parent's backyard.

But most of all, it is, as they say, FUN. I'm not saying this product is the solution to all our problems. It seems like a small but intriguing and enjoyable part of the solution. If being green means being a miserable SOB, then we'll have failed.

I find it strange to see how many people seem to insist that treehugger be one way or the other. You 'step out of line' and they complain that you're being too gloomy, not gloomy enough, too fashionable, too consumerist, too alarmist, too complacent, too idealistic...

TreeHugger is all those things. It's a mixed bag. It reports on a wide variety of stuff, and occasisionally puts in 2 cents' worth. I hope treehugger keeps its beadth of scope.

Why can't people just accept it for what it is? It's much wiser to see different ideas as an opportunity to think, not complain.

All scientific assertions are just hypotheses, but some are better than others. Global cooling was an interesting hypothesis, but it didn't stand up to testing.

The Global Warming hypotheis has been tested thousands of times more than Global Cooling, and still it stands. That's a big big big difference.

That being said, let's not lose perspective. I've been fighting denialists for years, because they use pseudoscience and faulty reasoning. But I really want them to be right, and me to be wrong.

Actually, on reflection, I think this is probably a pretty good product. I doubt very much that electric shaving uses much energy in the first place, and so much the better if they're reducing it more.

TH recently did a post on blower hand-driers vs. paper towels, and found, to my surprise, that the blowers had a smaller footprint. I suspect you'd find the same thing here. If they last 6+ years.

In the end, the aim isn't to reduce our footprints 100%, but to get them down to a reasonable level. Everyone gets to decide for themselves HOW to reduce their emissions by 90%, I think there are a lot of things I'd cut out before I shave away my electric razor.

BTW- I don't use an electric razor, I use a normal one, but I'd be interested in a footprint comparison. One thing I definitely do is use unpackaged shave soap and a brush (one bar lasts about a year) rather than cream from an aerosol can.

I suppose these restrictions could also explain the abundance of new suburbs that consist of large houses crammed together on small lots. Not that I mind small lots or high-density housing: it's all in the design. Certain house types are appropriate for denser communities. What I'm seeing a lot now are communities of houses that look like they've been designed for large, expansive exurban lots, but crammed in, uncomfortably, cheek-by-jowl.

Noone wants to pay more for energy. However, for more than a decade, after a 20% cut in cost to the consumer, rates have been frozen. Using simple economics and common sense you can see that if the government keeps on regulating prices, we are not going to have any companies deeming it profitable enough to supply energy. We need to open it up to competition in relatively free market or we will be asking for terrible trouble.

Politically speaking, it does not matter really where the, if any, fault lies. The democrats have been good at connecting the republicans with big oil (and there is some truth to that). Because of this, and because the republicans are in power, they are very vulnerable to being hurt politically by high gas prices.

For 15 years I have facilitated a support group for parents who have had a child die. Many of these children died as a result of a drunk driver. Only those who have made the journey can understand how terrible it is to bury your child. Yes, first time offenders do kill others. Think about the cost of the lost life & what that child might have contributed to society. I have no sympathy for the cost of the interlock for the offender.

I was having similar problems. When I tried to install on 25 GB IDE or SCSI virtual drives, I would get FDISK/layout errors. I ended up creating a 45 GB IDE virtual disk, which seems to work. It is silly because the install I selected should only use a couple of GBs.
