in Walking The Fine Line Of The Personal Brand on Social Media Explorer
Jason, great blog post. The first point you mentioned is only going to become a more important consideration, especially for Gen-Y'ers. If a company isn't in this space right now, they are in serious trouble in the future. In fact, I don't know how some companies can afford to spend money using traditional means right now, so they probably won't survive the recession anyways. HR is going to be forced to be "cool" with these social networking activities (and legal). The problem is that the workplace is still slow to change.

Most people brand themselves on twitter with "screen names" instead of their real name!

Donna, I'm glad you're taking this advice. It's better to read this post before you even use Twitter, but I think active Twitter users can take their brands to the next level with this information.

in Personal Branding for Teens: 7 Steps to Teach and Learn It on Radical Parenting
Vanessa, great article on personal branding. I think being a teenager is the perfect time to start building your brand, especially because most teens are either on Facebook, MySpace or both. Being smart about what you publish online, as well as what you include in your profile, is great advice!

in Why Facebook has never listened and why it definitely won’t start now on Scobleizer
Robert, I commend you on this post. It's probably the best blog post I've read all year and it really demonstrates where Facebook is heading, and why people should stop complaining about their business model and their new site design. We have to remember that we're dealing with very smart people at Facebook and big name investors and board members. I trust them!

in When You’re Talented - A Personal Brand Speaks For You (Or, How To Work Naked) on CAREEREALISM
You got my attention here ;). I agree with this post to some extent. Having talent and knowing what you're good at will get some attention, for sure. The only thing is that you can be the brightest person and people won't know about you. It's all about constant communication and reminders. For instance, every time you post on your blog, you're reminding people of your existence and knowledge.

Thank you Dan,
Given you are one of the main people I encourage young professionals to learn from when it comes to Personal Branding (Dan's new book Me 2.0 from Kaplan Press comes out soon. I got an advance copy and am already talking about it with students of CAREEREALISM University!), I love that this caught your eye.
And yes, you are completely correct. The 'legend in your own mind' problem can occur if you don't get yourself out there. Just had this conversation with a young person who e-mailed me begging for advice as to why she hadn't landed a job a year out of school. When I realized she had done ZERO personal branding and made suggestions to do so, she immediately became defensive and wrote off all of my suggestions. Well, looks like she'll be unemployed for a lot longer.
Thanks for stopping by and posting!

in People Branding on danny brown - social media pr and marketing
Good post here. Your personal brand, to the outside world (people who don't know you), is what they see on your website. That is why your design and writing has to be unique to you. In this world, you can't get away with trying to be someone else and why would you!

I agree, and I think that's why there's such a commotion currently about the question of ghostblogging. If it's your voice, it actually needs to be your voice and not someone that's just typing up what they think your readers and visitors want to hear.

I feel like you stood up for my true awareness of what personal branding is. I think at the site where this post was linked, she misrepresented my views on personal branding by taking something totally out of context. Your comments on that post were spot on.
I have more personal branding posts up my sleeve - stay tuned.

Brand maintenance can take a long time if your brand is spread thin.
I recommend you keep a list of the social networks you register for and put
a date next to the last time you updated them.

in Why Social Media Won't Get You Hired In A Recession | Social Media Explorer on Social Media Explorer
Jason, thanks for citing my name in this blog post. Your approach to getting a job is going to differ based on who you are as a person, as well as how many years of experience you have. For example, if you're highly connected online and then lose your job, it wont' be as hard to recover for the experienced professional. Recent college grades will use online means more than older generations, but older generations have cherished face-to-face networking more than younger generations. I would say face-to-face is stronger than online for sure, but the proper mix of both will set just about anyone up for success.

Agreed Dan, and certainly I would defer to someone of your expertise here. Speaking from my own experience in being hired and hiring, though, the off-line connection is much stronger than the on-line on both sides of the coin. My perspective. Thanks for commenting.
