in 7 Words That Changed My Career As A Designer on Webovator: A Designer' Life
One additional thing that might save you some time and loads of stress: ALWAYS use a written contract to clearly define your project, as well as the terms of payment. You should do this ESPECIALLY if you are working with a friend of a friend, because it usually will come back to haunt you if you just use a handshake and a verbal agreement. Get everything in writing. And a deposit of at least 1/3 before doing ANYTHING.

Yup, I'm using Flexx theme red. It's a blast to work with.
I struggled too to get it set up but once it's done, it all works well. Fingers crossed it stays that way of course. :-)

in Spit in the face of old age! on Wim Demeere's Blog
Hi Adrian,

No blather at all. It's weird how I now look back at some of the training I did twenty years ago and wonder how stupid I must have been. Youth is indeed wasted on the young. :-) But the good news is that the medical progress is amazing. Only ten years ago, a lot of knee surgery meant zipper scars and loads of rehab. Those same types of surgery are now a lot less invasive; just a couple holes though get to the knee and that's in. Post-op recovery is also a lot better now.
So I'm hopeful that by the time I need spare parts, they'll be making them in titanium and stronger than the original stuff. :-)

Thanks for stopping by,

Wim

That is indeed interesting. I'll look into the difference--which should be simple enough, since all I need do is ask my wife. Being married to a doctor has its compensations...

I have owned one in the past, but didn't use it often enough because I simply didn't prepare enough food from sctratch as I lived alone then. I do want one that uses local current, though, and thus far I find prices here in Ukraine to be about on a par with the States. I will look at the Braun, and thanks for the recommendation. I will be especially interested if it also has a blender attachment. For some reason, my wife thinks she'd really like a blender...

Sorry it's been so long to reply to a few of these comments! I'm still very much on the learning curve in this blog business. Now that I have a decent connection at home, though, things should pick up rapidly.
Thanks to all for the kind words, and I am happy you are enjoying it. I hope you come back regularly, as the content is about to expand rapidly with my better connection. Tomorrow, I plan to take some photographs with my digital camera and add them to the site. I will add others as I discuss various topics they will be pertinent to.
Kathy, I am glad to have helped on the FrugalFolks list. For anyone who has come from other places, the list is FrugalFolksLife@yahoogroups.com. The web address is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/frugalfolkslife. There is a huge companion website, and both are filled with good cheer, good community, and much information of all kinds about living frugally. Highly recommended!
Karen, I am very familiar with Irving, since I lived there for some time and generally in the Dallas area for the last few years before moving here. If you drive to the stores, it is simple to get in the habit of putting your shopping bags in the car after you empty them so the next time you go to the store they will be handy. It's also rather nice to not need to deal with so many plastic bags all the time!
And Tom, I'm not a consumer of Cadbury candy, thankfully. I eat very occasional bits of dark chocolate, generally a special mixture made with fructose by Korona, a local brand of, I think, Nestle or another Western brand. (I know it is owned by one of them, but I don't remember which and I don't have a label at present to look...)

Barbara, thanks for the comments! I am not surprised that folks are comparison shopping more given the tremendous upheaval in the economy these days. Frugality is more important for more people than ever, but many don't have a clue how to be frugal in their own lives. This is one of the focus areas of this blog, given that Ukraine has such a lower standard of living and far lower wages to contend with.
I haven't seen much in the way of hand work other than with individuals. My wife, an anesthesiologist, gets busy each year and knits a few sweaters, for instance, as presents for family and close friends. I had a medical procedure in a clinic run by one of her best friends. The friend was wearing an incredibly beautiful sweater under her lab coat, and I complimented her on it. She said it had been a gift made by my wife! At the same time, I have seen few decent sewing machines here. Most in the stores seem to be Brother or the equivalent, which I understand are rather basic and not all that good.

in Things have been a little slow, lately… on A Texan Abroad
To respond to these comments: Lisa, whether your Dad can get hyperbaric treatment depends largely upon his blood pressure, if it's a whole body type. If he also has high blood pressure that is not well controlled, reputable docs won't allow it because it is dangerous. When I came to Ukraine the first time, I couldn't have the treatments for that reason. Now, I'm much better controlled so it's a no-brainer. There are some hyperbaric devices, though, that fasten around an arm or leg for treating wounds that could work quite well, if he can find one in his area. Medical care here is generally poorer than in the U.S...unless you find the exceptional doctors or, like me, you happen to be married to one! I will deal with food and other prices on the blog itself very shortly.

Toni, I am happy for the good wishes. I will certainly take a book with me to the treatments, to see if there's room in there for one. The ones I have seen have no such room, although there is a window above the head to see out. I will surely be taking pictures and putting them on the blog...the first ones I plan on posting tomorrow (Monday). Stay tuned...and I hope all is going well with the mail list!

Lorin wrote:
I’m curious: how did it compare with The Other Boleyn Girl?

Hi Lorin. Thanks for leaving a comment! I just added a note to this review stating that I had originally posted this review several months ago. I've been in the middle of redesigning and reorganizing this site and in the process, I managed to delete this review from the import file. So I had to re-post it.

To be honest with you, I can't really give you a complete comparison between the two books The Other Boleyn Girl and The Last Boleyn because it has been a while since I have read both books.

However, I CAN say that I enjoyed reading both books. Gregory and Harper wrote their stories well. And while the story of Mary Boleyn is basically the same in each book, each author has a slightly different view about Mary and the nature of the role she played to help her family rise to power during the Tudor period. I read The Last Boleyn in its entirety even though I had already read The Other Boleyn Girl, because one, I love historical fiction--especially English historical fiction and two, because Harper's interpretation of the same or similar events that Gregory included in her book, The Other Boleyn Girl intrigued me.

Historically, there's a lot of rumor surrounding Mary and Anne Boleyn--much of it fantastical or sensational. In The Last Boleyn and The Other Boleyn Girl Harper and Gregory include different bits of the rumor mill in their books (one author focuses more on the fantastical gossip, for example) which results in two distinct portrayals of Mary Boleyn.

I hope that helps.

I checked that out (the best I could) and many of the links connect to university libraries. Some link to specific official sites for a particular author. The site for Access The Great Books, only goes up to a certain year. Current authors can request to be added to the list (like Annie Dillard.) These sites have been around for a while. . .

Hey Kyle,

Just to clarify my position:

Live however which way you want, do whatever you want to do, as long as it doesn't affect another's ability to do the same.

I'm not an anarchist, that is true, and I think the playing field should be even and fair, but I definitely don't support the omnipotent state.
