in State grants final approval for Columbia's expansion into Manhattanville | Columbia Spectator on Columbia Spectator
A couple of things to note:
1) When a reporter interviews someone on the record, no further 'permission' is needed to print his or her words—that is the clear purpose of speaking to a source in the first place. What exactly did Ms. Bailey expect when she talked to Spec other than to be quoted? No one forced her to say what she did, and in no way did the paper misconstrue her comments as a 'statement' (unless you can point to an invisible paragraph where it did).
2) Please explain to me what is 'unflattering' about Ms. Bailey's quote in this article. It strikes me as perfectly cogent and accurately representative of her principled opposition to the Columbia plan. That her interview was not replicated in full is neither surprising nor unusual—news accounts are by their nature abridged versions of events. I'm sure Bollinger, Bloomberg, Paterson, and Sprayregen all said quite a bit more which wasn't included in this story.
3) If you really think accurately quoting and excerpting something that a person admits he/she uttered "borders on defamation," then I suggest you educate yourself in U.S. libel law. How did anyone misrepresent her views other than not itemizing her every talking point in print?

Oh, sorry, I wasn't aware that we'd entered a parallel universe where any ol' claim in a comment thread was blindly accepted without need for evidence or an argument.
Hey, did you know that Lee Bollinger is an alien from the Betelgeuse system? Yeah! It's so obvious that I won't even deign to give substance to it. And clearly you're just a moron if you don't admit this.
Really, you must be a lawyer. Rock-solid argumentation there.

"In fact, no one at Columbia seems to know or care about history very much," said the man unwilling to cite any history in support of his argument. Does the irony escape you entirely?
There are plenty of factors that may account for the phenomenon you postulate—the fact that Columbia has one of the most racially and ethnically diverse student bodies in the country, the fact that your association with the school may lead you to pay closer attention to campus news, the fact that Columbia resides in a city populated by insatiable media outlets (just ask Fox News)—but unless you're willing to put forward a substantive argument as to why history proves Columbia to be 'especially' racist, your claim is merely an ad hominem.
There are real and insidious forms of racism in the world, but rash and unsupported allegations of bigotry set back more meaningful efforts to annihilate it, Mr. Brown.

History is readily available to all. Do you need it spoon fed to you? You are a perfect example of someone who is ignorant if it. You are saying, in essence, that if I don't explain it to you, it doesn't exist. I don't give history lessons.

Boy, that was clumsy cop-out. You're happy to charge the author with racism because of a single turn of phrase, but you can't be bothered to substantiate your sweeping claim that Columbia is an 'especially' racist institution?
If you're correct, it should not be difficult to back this allegation up (if even cursorily). Please enlighten us.

I'm not giving history lessons. In fact, no one at Columbia (especially those who teach the Core) seems to know or care about history very much. But since 1996, for example, there have been numerous incidents at Columbia that were highly publicized that involved anti-black actions and statements. Although Harvard is in the news now in this regard, I have not heard of nearly as many incidents at other Ivy league schools.

Are you really complaining that the victims of rent skimming landlords need to have 24 hr notice before you bring random people through the house that they are living in and invade their privacy? You are exactly the sort of person who would be in real estate for 35 years. I cannot begin to express my contempt for you and your worthless Realtwhore ilk.

Irony is pretty good actually.
Its very Ted Leo and the Pharmacists (dear the Ivy League, listen to Ted Leo and the Pharmacists)
Whoever sings that first verse should sing more.

That's Dan, he's got a pretty great voice. I agree with the fact that he should sing more. And Adrian's voice sounds great in this song too, more natural than the other songs.

Actually, I used to use Zinkmo a lot, but then the connection broke with Firefox 3. It looks like there's a new version, which is terrific. It's great when you've got a computer at work that has to use IE, but you'd rather use FF at home. YAY!

Any idea what 'reproductive rights' does to women? You should do some research. Millions of women psychologically and physically damaged by an abortion. Men who weren't consulted and perhaps were against the abortion and would have raised the child - they were not considered part of the decision? The abominations occurring in nature and in the fertility of men due to the immense amount of hormones released into the water supply from women taking the pill, among other things. All the awful side effects of chemical contraception that the mains - the information is out there if you look for it! How many women are used as objects of desire or recreation rather than being loved and cherished for who they are and the marital act becoming a unitive measure for a committed couple? Something that has always been wrong doesn't suddenly become right, just because a misled society deems it so. There is, and can be, only one truth. This is a very effective ad, if it makes even one woman think about the potential of the life of the innocent child they are carrying.

Yep, TH might as well give up on the 'best act ever' category and focus their efforts on something else. Rick is a lock for it. He never gave us up and we never let him down.

Good grief. What a bunch of white guilt nonsense, DBB. There's a huge difference between being a prophetic voice against injustice and calling the country in which YOU live and gives YOU the freedom to speak the USKKKA and implying that 9/11 was in direct response to past American actions. What a crock.

Just because Bill won't perform live doesn't mean you have to make an entire CGI movie. Why not just make Bill's character CGI? Like, have him turn into a ghost and the rest of the guys have to rescue his sole or something.
Honestly, there's no point making a sequel if it's not done right. Just look at Blues Brothers 2000.
