I guess they can pay their bills now! What a life.. a billion dollars AND you get to keep your job!

Re: Question of the Day

I am old enough to where I don't recall my FIRST experience with racism, because it was so prevalent when and where I lived. But I am now seeing it through my children's eyes, since they are minorities in an overwhelmingly white town. I illustrated a discussion we had about kids they encounter who act like they have never seen an Asian before. These are actual questions, although the answers are hypothetical ones we came up with. http://www.misscellania.com/miss-cellania/2008/...

Re: Many adults cannot name a scientist

First thought was my late father, but I can think of plenty I'm not related to. The only things I regretted losing then was the family photos. No baby pictures of me at all! Now my entire family stores prints, negatives, and digital copies in more than one place, so if one house burns, they can be copied from another.

After the kids get out in a fire, I would grab the cats and a file box of documents with my childrens' immigration and citizenship papers. Those are VERY hard to replace.

Re: The Ecology of Cities

Some of the very oldest cities, at least in the wealthier nations, are amazingly suited for modern times, i.e. New York and Tokyo. But cities that grew in the 20th century on the modern "urban sprawl" model are now unattractive because of their land use, social isolation, and traffic. The example that comes to mind is Atlanta, although I'm sure there are plenty of others.

Re: New Wind Turbine Harnesses Aerodynamics of Buildings

I didn't find a price on this, so can I assume its tres expensive? With all the wind power gadgets available, I wonder why they are not more widely used. Is it the expense? Or are potential clients waiting a year to see how they work long-term (which gives the company time to go out of business)?

Re: Todae. A New Eco Retail Store for Sydney

I think the key to encouraging eco-stores is keeping them in business long enough for prices to fall. Prices will be too high for the average consumer until startup costs are recouped and it becomes cost-effective to order and stock higher quantities (volume, volume, volume). In the meantime, those who care deeply about such issues will have to go out of our way to subsidize such businesses.

Re: Stuff: How Much Do You Really Need?

My house burned down when I was 17, and I got a good lesson in how little stuff really matters.
