There's the dotcom 2.0 and then there's Web 2.0 as the idea of evolving beyond static to interactive design; implementing all of the available new tools and philosophies to more effectively engage visitors/customers and communicate with them.

Truthfully the Techcrunch crowd is the lunatic fringe, but they can help any start-up gain momentum for interacting in the realworld. If you're marketing a site/solution, remember who your ultimate audience is and reach out to them through "their" channels of influence.

Re: VentureBeat is back

Matt, how sweet it is to have your own RocketBoom...ok ok, had to inject some humor in light of the situation, but seriously you got everyone talking and to have the biggest and brightest call VentureBeat a "daily read" has got to make everything alright in your book! Truthfully, I had an entirely different presentation to share strategies based on listening and how to create campaigns based on the metrics we deemed important. However, it was recommended that I start by sharing the tools and techniques for capturing real world data that either shows you're successful or you're not. I've spent several years interviewing companies on the metrics they're using for social media, so I have to disagree with you when you say that this is "already adopted by many social media practitioners." They're not benchmarking traffic, activity, perception, or authority to specific points in time or against their competition. They may be doing this personally, but not for the businesses they represent. It's just not happening out there on a consistent or widespread basis. And yes it's manual. It has to be if you want to uncover accurate and incontestable numbers for which to prove efficiency and effectiveness to upper management. I've been working with a development team to create a solution that automates this because the only tools that are available automate some listening, but only for responding or tracking, not for measuring. Regarding your point that you "hoped to hear more about how to actually develop the strategy with measurement in mind," we can talk about it any time you'd like...in fact, I'll write a post on it as soon as I wrap up this book...one, how to measure, to how to develop strategies based on key measurement criteria. Let me know if there are other things you'd like to see covered and I'll add it to the outline. Thanks again Aaron.

Re: Everything on this Vista PC is an Afterthought

Zoli, what an experience! I share in your pain. I went from PC to Mac (which I love). I added Windows back into the fold when Sony released the TX subnotebook line b/c I was tired of lugging around a big beautiful notebook with me from conferences to events to meetings.

Unfortunately we bought two machines running Vista. We experimented by installing XP on one and learning to live with Vista on the other. The XP machine runs like a champ...fast, responsive, friendly to most programs. The Vista machine has cost me in time MUCH more than it cost to buy the notebook. I upgraded RAM, uninstalled (manually) many useless processes, applications, and that's just to have it function decently. I do have to say that the SP1 beta update that's floating around made a big difference. But, when the new 12 inch macbook comes out, you can bet that this TX is going on craigslist.

Re: Search, PR and Social Media Blogs

Lee, thank you. This means that you are right, we don't have a search engine for conversations in Facebook (outside of the social graph) - at least not yet. In the meantime, search.peoplebrowsr.com allows you to search keywords within your social graph today. However, I do agree with you. Truth is that "social" is what's truly sparking the controversy here. PR has enjoyed the ability to hide behind so many tools in the past, and now finally, social media is forcing the evolution of an age-old trade. We can no longer hide behind the BS of hype and snake oil. PR must now engage with people directly, and in order to do so, must be the “people” they want to reach, not just a faceless machine.

Re: Resources for New Media and Social Media PR

Hey Lee, can't forget PR2.0 - http://www.PR2point0.com ;)

Great list and as always, another helpful post!!!

Re: Resources for New Media and Social Media PR

Lee, you're awesome...and that blogspot evolution to pr2point0.com has been a long, but assured process. ;)

Re: Blogger Relations 101

Lee, first I wanted to commend you on pulling together a killer link list for this subject.

Second, I wrote the two posts at Blog Forward, "Building a Bridge Between PR and the Blogosphere" and "Finding Bloggers in Your Market," as a way of helping new and veteran PR pros learn how to expand their value. He's one of the very few people I actually let shoot me ;)

I don't get to as many events as I used to since shooting the rise of 2.0 over the last 3-4 years, but I do have at least the last few chronicled here: http://www.flickr.com/briansolis . I originally set out to capture the essence and soul of not just Web 2.0, but also what I called "the social economy" - the people collaborating and competing to define the next web. I noticed contrasts in who they were online and IRL and I made it a mission to capture their true Web stature, brilliance and the associated electricity of each event to share with the rest of the world. It's the reason why I started bub.blicio.us in addition to PR 2.0. I would be nowhere without the help and inspiration of good friends Thomas Hawk, Scott Beale, and Lane Hartwell who were there at the very beginning. Cheers everyone, hope to see you soon.

Re: Scoble Is So Right About Kara Being SSSSSOOOOO Right About Silly Facebook Apps!

You're absolutely right. What's the average age of a Facebook employee?

So far I've only installed, and used, business or personal brand-focused applications.

One thing that did resonate with me at the Graphing Social conference was a quote from Jeff Nolan, "Regardless of the app, it's extending the brand into a venue where it didn’t have a presence before. It’s not about advertising or functionality right now. The widget is an ad for the brand. It takes the brand into a new medium where people, a lot of people, can be exposed to it."

Re: Kara Visits The Lobby in Hawaii

Thanks for shooting some video while you're there! I do agree with he sentiment about the Facebook deal as well.

On the other hand, Ning's $44 million round also had people questioning the return of the bubble.

Things are definitly feeling a bit http://bub.blicio.us !

Re: Slide Gets Big Funding?

Hi Kara, any update on this?
