I ended up on a two-cars-short R5 the other day, so we were forced toward the quiet car because there wasn't room anywhere else. The conductor did make an announcement as we got on that we were on the quiet car, and even standing-room-only, people were generally pretty quiet, to the extent that we got a couple nasty looks when making a 30-second-long phone call to let the people meeting us in Ambler know what time we'd be there. (Tried to move toward the back of the car to make the call, but couldn't.)

I won't jump on you, because I have had this conversation many times with the OBs I work closely with, and the vast majority of them see marijuana as one of the least harmful substances a woman could use while pregnant when compared side-by-side with other substances like tobacco, alcohol, or other street drugs. That it NOT to say that marijuana is perfectly safe, because it isn't, so if you're taking it because you believe it will have NO adverse effects you are not being realistic. But using it occassionally during pregnancy is no more harmful than an occassional glass of wine (and people overreact about that, too).

Talk to your doctor, don't take anyone else's word for it. Honestly, your doctor will probably encourage you to take a prescription medication - some of those used to treat anxiety are very safe during pregnancy, such as Vistaril. If you decide to use the marijuana please just be honest with your doctor about it. They won't look down upon you, they just need to know what you're taking so they can provide you and your baby with the best level of care they can.

Hi. This is a really interesting topic. Our writing definitely varies in quality depending upon each post...we have a few different categories on domaine547, and the Freshly Pressed articles get more attention, for the most part, than the Grapewise articles, for instance.

Sometimes we churn things out in an effort to get new content up, and haven't paid as much attention to detail as we would like. Sometimes we speak off the cuff. Sign us up. We have our own personal style, which sometimes goes against the Elements of Style and other accepted grammatical standards.

Mostly these "style" deviations are intentional, sometimes they are not. After all, as a blog, domaine547 is trying to establish a voice of its own, lest it be too similar to other blogs covering similar topics. But we are certainly open to the idea of improvement, and open to anything that encourages that.

Our numbers...pale in comparison to a lot of others out there. But we just launched in May, so we're not feeling too bad about it.

August Stats:

Mint: 2500 uniques per month, 10K pageviews

Google: 2400 absolute uniques per month, 9500 pageviews

Don't know where the discrepancy comes from. This was a big dip in traffic from June and July, and traffic is going up again. Also, we have had trouble integrating the analytics tools to track both our blog and the store, and we're still trying to work out the kinks.

We had an enormous spike when we were in Daily Candy...got about a month's worth of traffic in a day. Our goal? Who knows. We'd love to have 500 uniques per day and we'd be pretty happy.

actually, I remember Ryan having twittered this week about enjoying garnacha tintorera, and didn't even pick up on the "tinted" clue. So I may not deserve the official title as of yet! I also have to say, while I enjoy the GT grape and we have one in our inventory, nobody else seems to have any desire to try it...even though it's a bargain basement wine. Oh well!

I think it's a mismatch. Fans of Scorcese are fairly highbrow, despite his Oscar win for The Departed. I think while the concept is decent (BMW's short films were considered ultra-successful) this has not been fully thought out. The Wes Anderson/American Express ad was a better fit, too, in terms of audience/content appropriateness.

Moreover, there was a short film at Sundance about five years ago, called "David Mamet's Gilded Stones", that is basically the same concept as this: a lost reel of a David Mamet film is recreated by three different film directors: John Woo, Scorcese, and I'm forgetting the third. Directed by Jim Dodson, the short film was spot on in its direction and is more successful in replicating the auteurs' trademark styles than Scorcese is with Hitchcock (just having birds outside a window, or a character name reference, does not a mimic make). I wish I could find a link to it online, it really is a fantastic film (starring pre-Weeds Elizabeth Perkins, and Rosanna Arquette). And it advertises nothing.

I think this could have been money well spent but doesn't quite hit its target.

Yeah, it's a ridiculously inaccurate article. I don't know a whole helluva lot about Spain, but even in my limited experience I caught many of the untruths and factual errors that you point out. Plus, the fact that some of the most highly regarded wine importers have been focusing on Spain isn't even mentioned. Why would Eric Solomon waste his time in a vast wasteland?

As for whether it's link-baiting, I'm not sure. It's hard to tell. It does say that it's a weekly column...so I guess you could look through past entries to see what the level of reporting is and whether it's as hyperbolic and instigative (is that even a word? I think maybe I just made that up!).

I love the idea of doing an internet-based publication (at least as a testing ground for print...though print isn't very eco-friendly, is it?).

The one thing I fear: I'm a blogger, but I'm a retailer. Would I automatically be disqualified from participation due to my commercial background? Or is there someway to integrate industry folks (retailers, wineries, etc.) without blurring the editorial/advertising lines? I would hate to have to sit on the sidelines on this one, but I could see this as a logistical necessity once standards are articulated.

Just figured I should raise this early on.

I will need to take some time to fully respond to the points that are being raised here, and will try to do so sometime in the next day or so.

In the meantime, I want to point out that my business is to ship wine. I can't do much about my business model, since I'm a mail order house, more or less (whether I'm delivering locally or farther afield). And wine, inherently, is a product with a carbon footprint to begin with.

We can all try to be local-vores as much as we'd like, but I don't suspect Richard would be that happy just drinking fruit wines from the cranberry bogs of Cape Cod, or Concord Grape concoctions native to New England. So even if Richard is buying wine from the local store, if it comes from California or Spain, there is an environmental impact to this form of consumption.

What I am aiming to do with the TerraPass program is not just to assuage people's guilt, but to acknowledge that wine consumption has an impact on the environment. I hope to get people to take note of this, and to hopefully do something about it (what they can do at this point is limited: either stop drinking anything but local products, take part in a carbon offset program, buy from wineries with sustainable practices, to name a few of the non-abundant options available).

I did lots of research on carbon offsets before deciding what company to go with, and very reputable sources gave the thumbs up to TerraPass. Yes, the system is not perfect. Yes, this is possibly just a band-aid rather than a long-term solution. But should I do nothing and just say that any damage done is miniscule (given the small scale nature of my business) and a cost of doing business, or should I take some responsibility, even if the results will be equally miniscule?

I'd prefer the latter.

In any case, I have not been drinking that much Spanish wine of late, mostly because the reps have not been bringing it around for some reason. I did by a bottle of Can Blau last week, out of curiosity. And I have Eric Solomon and Jorge Ordonez tastings over the next few weeks, so much Spanish wine is in my future!

I have noticed an odd run on the Piqueras Almansa Garnacha Tintorera of late, with a few customers ordering, one in case quantity. I thought I'd be closing that item out, but ended up restocking it due to its sudden popularity!

I can't wait to read your Rioja newsletter so I can get some good tips on wines to seek out. Thanks, guys, for everything!

Nice tribute to a "blogger's blogger". I'd been reading Steve for a couple of years and one day was looking at a photo he'd posted of a day-out with his niece and nephew. All of a sudden, I realized, "Steve's black!"

A bunch of other readers must also have noticed about that time, because, as a joke, every once and a while, someone would post, "Steve's black!".

Black, white, green, or blue, Gilliard was the best around. I loved his history - particularly military history - "lessons" as I came to think of them.

I definitely agree that working out keeps'em nice and perky. I also have a couple of tips to add, if that's okay. 1) Don't go cheap on the sports bra (this is particularly the case if G-d has been generous in bestoying big boobies upon you. 2) unless you're lying down, wear a bra. The more you go braless, the more the skin will stretch so lounging around on a Sunday with no bra would be ill-advised.

P.S. Mitch's advice is so spot on. Every interview I went on, I emailed within 2 hours of leaving the firm and wrote to say a) thank you b) why I think it would be a great place to work and c) I literally state: I just wanted to express my great interest in working for your firm. I would be absolutely thrilled if you offered me the position. d) I ask them to contact me if there is any additional information they may need to assist them in reaching their decision-that way, if there's something they're not sure about, it'll give u a chance to further persuade them. e) If they rejected me, I followed up to say that I was disappointed to hear that they decided against hiring me and I ask them to contact me if something changes. You never know, right?

NY is such a competitive market that I think showing that you really want the job makes a big difference.

Anyway, I'm babbling so I'll shut up now. :) Seriously let me know if you need anything.

If it makes Ploop feel any better, this post hasn't generated any sales that I can think of. We regularly do "price checks" and include our own wines in the lot. There are very few times when we have the lowest price -- we're not a discounter, and deal in small volume compared to the mega-stores that can afford to barely mark things up (like Costco).

I wonder what the deleted comment said...I can only imagine. Being a cynic, I have sympathy for anybody who assumes my "honesty" is somehow a ploy. Again, though, I'm just not that adept a businessperson to figure out what that devious angle might be.

Okay, I wanted to share my crazy Christmas stories from this year.

1. At Sam's Club I accidentally - in a state of holiday absent-mindedness - used the men's bathroom. It was horrifying.

2. I complained loudly about the price of Yankee Candles. So much so that the clerk produced a coupon for $15 off. You can't beat that.

3. I turned my grandma on to a classic Guerlain perfume, Apres L'Ondee (1906). She said it smelled, "Sooo gooood!" She'll be getting a bottle of it for Chrismas tomorrow straight from the NYC Bergdorf Goodman boutique. That's pretty insane.

I just wanted Tana to stop talking about the Bedazzler last night! She did get "off task" with the t-shirt embellishment idea but Alex took absolutely no initiative to handle the marketing himself which he could have done. I think he deserved to be fired when you look over the cumulative performances. As for Craig and Kendra... well Craig should be thanking his lucky stars that he was paired with Kendra last night because that is what got him to the interview round. Kendra has a knack for marketing, she's young and I think she's trainable. I don't know why Trump would not chose her over Craig. As far as Tana is concerned I also think she's trainable and has great focus (bedazzler episode aside) and attitude. If it doesn't come down to the two women something is seriously fishy here.

I agree with you assessment of Craig. I see his problems stemming from insecurity. He is trying so hard to have some control over this process he has NO control over so he's taking it out on Kendra. I wish her reactions were more appropriate to his comments... she really should just laugh at him! I think Tana is just trying to keep any mud stains off herself.

I'm hoping they do interviews next week instead of a task. I think Alex and Craig will continue to fail at tasks, but it would be interesting to see how they would fare during the interview process. Alex could possibly do o.k..... I think Craig would bomb.

Actually last night I was laughing the whole time and Alex and Bren. What a pair!!!

I, too, was disappointed with Tana last night. From the beginning she has shown herself to be in a class by herself when it comes to a great attitude. I don't know if it was the exemption or the late hour, but last night she needed an atitude adjustment badly. I would have loved to see her fully support Kendra in this project and set it up for a really class showdown between the two of them in the final. In my opinion it still comes down to the two ladies and I'll be sorely disappointed if Trump picks one of the men. He gave Chris the benefit of the doubt for WAY too many weeks because he was a guy.

Wow... the past two seasons the two finalists did not get stuck with the worst people from each team. I think Tana and Kendra have been seriously handicapped for entertainment's sake and I wonder just how much they really have control over. If this was a real business situation and the clients were depending on them to come through they wouldn't have been handed the worst teams imaginable. If these are truly real events scheduled to happen at real time the clients would not have agreed to hand it over in such a manner. You are right... they need fresher ideas for the whole show, particularly this 'final' challenge. My money is on Kendra. I admire Tana a lot, particularly her attitude, but I think Trump will go with someone who has a longer career arc ahead of them. Craig just got chewed up and spit out in the interviews... exactly what I expected.

I agree that Tana's task was probably more challenging but she sealed her fate by predetermining that her teammates were stooges and wouldn't work for her. Whether she expressed that to them out loud or not they certainly would have picked up the vibes so what motivation to they have to do ANYTHING right? I think the program Kristen put together was deliberate sabatoge. No one is so stupid to think that kind of copy belongs in a program. I was impressed with Kendra. She's young, she could have let some of the little problems that came in to play derail her and she didn't. She gave her teammates respect and they payed her back by performing at a decent level. Maybe the task wasn't as difficult but she started with unhappy sponsors and turned that around. She made those sponsors feel that she was working in their best interest. Tana neglected to create that impression in her clients. She did not manage expectations well at all.

In my opinion Kendra is a lock. Tana really did not paint a pretty picture of herself.

We are having some difficulty receiving many channels in Ft. Collins. What's strange is they came in with the converter box this winter, but since April channel 2, 7, 9 and 12 won't come in. Careful though, I don't think it's an either/or thing. I spent many of my teenage weekends hosting rather swish gin parties and undoubtedly ended up a little drunker than I should at many. This didn't rule out more innocent girly activities or stop me from getting the grades I needed to read Law at Cambridge University. absolutely LOVE the hands and you've just inspired me to try doing a picture that i have of jerry (my s.o.) holding his tiny grandson's face in his huge hand to give the infant's head support. i've loved that picture since i first saw it, had it blown up to 8 x 10 print -- but your posting here has just made me realize that i should draw (or try to draw) that picture.

When I was a child my mother would drag me into the city to get my glasses on Delancey Street but I don't remember which store it was. My recollection is we had a relative that worked there so got a discount. Those octagon shaped glasses were very chic.

Also we would come to Orchard St with my grandparents to buy sheets, blankets and underwear. I'm not so sure it was the savings that was the pull, but it was where their parents shopped and so they did it too.

My son is doing an internship with the Lower East Side Ecology Center. He is their first high school intern, with the hopes of expanding the program if it works out. He is learning a lot, not only about the environment but also how to work with people, speak professionally and be persuasive.

Oh Mr. BB, you have neglected a very important thing about that mall under the bridge. On the top floor is one of the best places to eat Dim Sum on Sundays. Guaranteed. Go, go now, go often. Go on Chinese New Year for an even more fun experience. You will eat things unnamed (don't bother asking and don't be picky), end up stuffed and not spend more than $10, maybe $15 if you can't stop. Don't forget to ask for the "flower tea" instead of the stuff they put on the table. They will pretend like they don't know what you are talking about, but just keep saying it, chrysanthemum tea, flower tea. It is great.

You mock me with "set your DVR" since Time Warner took mine away, replaced it with a "new" one that is dented and only gets basic channels. I unabashedly love TV.

If you like these guys, the on demand channel has a bio-pic type of thing about the show which is pretty interesting.

My husband saw Jemaine on Avene A walking around in tiny red shorts. The episode featuring him in those shorts aired a couple weeks ago. They are indeed, tiny.

Weirdly I just turned on my TV and it appears to be working perfectly, at least for now. After they get it fixed, I certainly intend to call them and see about the reduced rate by pretending to cancel.

What I've learned over the years is to call five times to figure out the consistency between the answers they give to the same problem. On Friday I had one woman telling me the appointment department was closed, while simultaneously on my cell phone a different woman was confirming my appointment for the next day. It really makes a difference who you speak to. But I also don't have the internet and phone service from them so I don't think I as valuable a customer. In fact I cancelled the cable modem a few years ago after it kept shutting me down and they couldn't help, just blamed my computer.

And to add insult to injury in my TV world, my son's TV (the actual TV not the cable) broke yesterday 4 days after the warranty expired. Sigh...

But really the problem is the back door "yellow tape" issue that nobody seems to understand, and half the time doesn't work. It doesn't seem farfetched to expect that the back door should automatically open and stay open long enough for everybody to disembark safely. That door is so heavy it would be easy to kill someone by just letting go at the right moment.

I don't think it's that easy to get into public housing. Also, for working middle income people, especially if you have a family and you need more than a studio apartment, there is nowhere to move that's reasonable. You get stuck in the middle, you can't afford to move and you don't even really want to stay where you are, but you can't afford anything else. That's why so many families leave New York. But living in New Jersey, to me, sounds like some serious punishment.

The better solution is rent laws that protect everybody, not just the tenants that have been here a long time.

Amen & Amen. I am so blessed by reading comments from others and grateful that I am not alone in my beliefs. I live in the conservative midwest and it is refreshing to see others like myself out there. A close friend of mine who since has become a pastor once said "I would like to think that the Adventist church is big enough for all of us" He was right. My belief is to be a minister to those who are hurting, hungry, poor,widowed, divorced,abused,confused, struggling etc. The list can go on and on. The world to many is a cruel place. And as believers of the war between good and evil we need to be there to comfort those with the same comfort that Jesus gives to us.

Amen to Justin. Speaking as a PA with a few years under her belt, primary care never interested me for a variety of reasons. Probably the same reasons med school graduates are not choosing it for residency. PAs as a group do not go to PA school to be the captain, they go to be part of the team. Lucky for me, I've found an MD to work with who respects what I know and knows I am not shy about asking for help when the need arises. I think as a team we provide better care than a single MD could ever manage. I feel like I've been reading more than my share of these posts lately.

I do appreciate your explanation. I actually love satirical humor...it's my favorite kind (think Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs on Discovery...LOVE him!). I guess, though, for me, satirical humor is at its best when spoken/seen so that the inflection and expressions add to the effect. Sometimes with the written word, it can sometimes be had to tell what is meant literally, what is being presented as satirical (but not really) and was is truly satirical.

Again, I do love your blog for you blogging advice...you have some great tips! Keep them coming.

It's not the Catholics that are hypocrites (okay, most of 'em) it's the priests, bishops, pope, etc. It's essentially a bunch of men - who have vowed to have nothing to do with women - who insist that they have the authority to make these choices for other people. If they lived their lives like, well, human beings, they'd probably see the value of proper family planning; but since they'll never have to deal with the fallout of no birth control, they feel as though they can make whatever unrealistic rules they'd like.

haha...must be a Shipman thing....my dad and grandfather always had Martin boxes! When I was a little girl, I always had the "privilege" of cleaning them out, since my hand was the smallest to fit in the opening! Always had a glove on, of course, but still freaked me out!

This is actually the recipe I use and was given to me by my Aunt Aldeane (Denny's cousin)....so it is a family recipe...ha. I love this recipe and it keeps the kitchen from getting so hot because you do not have to boil the corn first! Your corn looks yummy! I am sure you will enjoy it this winter. You have a wonderful hubby to help you! Great job!

I went to Missy's class tonight. It was great and so inspiring for us all to do well at this. I see your cutting board in the pictures. A lady there tonight suggested using a craft board and a box cutter. I came home and used my regular Pampered Chef cutting board and a utility knife. Works great and very quick! Ordered my sheet protectors online tonight. Good luck!

I would LOVE these for my 2 2-year olds! One has his finger up his nose constantly (EWWW!!) and the other has an NJ tube up his nose and boogers get all around it. Needless to say nose wiping happens a lot at my house!
