in LearnHub on Lead Confidential
LearnHub has been online about a year, but has substantially greater (and growing) student exposure compared to StudyLink. From Compete:

http://siteanalytics.compete.com/studylink.com+...

Alexa shows a similar graph. The StudyLink traffic is too insignificant to register in QuantCast.

in clustershot.com - a fair market for stock photography on StartupNorth
I'm surprised you didn't mention iStockPhoto, a Canadian startup that was acquired by Getty.

Its the first place I look, after CC photos on flickr, because its economical. From wikipedia: "Images cost between 1 and 20 credits, depending on size (with credits ranging from $.96 to $1.30 [1] each)."

in More on how I was right - Facebook is dead as a platform on StartupNorth
I'd be curious to know what Albert Lai thinks about all this... his company Kontagent just won a fbFund grant. He must feel there is still opportunity there.

As for me, I'm with you 100%. I don't know that you could ever build something as meaningful as Facebook ON Facebook.

in Canadian entrepreneurs have to be more creative than relying exclusively on the US market. on StartupNorth
Why is relying on the US market un-creative?

Especially when it comes to e-commerce, its pretty hard to focus anywhere else. PayPal--even credit cards--aren't used elsewhere. And advertisers pay way more for US audiences.

Do you suggest our friend Stuart should orient TripHarbor.com to another market? How could that possibly make sense?

I say all this as someone who's education company is focusing on India, by the way.

in Turns out Angel-Incubator VC’s were not the Answer on StartupNorth
Good article Ali.

Let's all work our best (not that I need to tell you!) to really knock a few out the park. I think the way out of this mess is to have a bunch of big, shinning successes. When is Well.ca going to IPO???

Jevon, do you know much about their funding situation? I can't remember... I thought Albert got VC from one or two firms, but there was nothing in their StartupIndex profile...

Thanks for squeezing LearnHub in to #11 David! Hehe.

I would consider SmartHippo for number 12... the mortgage industry is ripe for disruption.

in CIX - Canadian Venture Capital Meetup on StartupNorth
So we have this trophy here... says "Best Pre-VC Deal" from the Canandian Venture Forum (from the TVG). Did the phone ring off the hook with investors?

Nope. Interest from the VCs we were already talking to did not increase. Other Canadian VCs expressed no more interest than they were already.

Overall Value = Zero - ticket cost.

Also known as, DON'T GO.

A year later, we closed an A round from a large Indian company. CVF meant nothing to them.

The link to download the script file seems broken. :(

I'm excited to try this out, instead of the boring emails we get today.

in Founders and Funders Toronto Kick Off Questions on StartupNorth
I'm with Chris R (I think): Entrepreneurship can not be taught in school. (Though Malgosia & I witnessed the best possible effort when Greg had us speak an engineering class at UoT.)

What Toronto/Canada needs is role models. God bless the Lor's, McDerment's, Boujnane's, Garrity's, Lai's which are inspiring the next wave. We need big successful outcomes to seem achievable (they are!) by having big successful outcomes to point to.

Malgosia and I helped build a company in San Fran that sold for $61M after 14 months. Our conclusion, we can do that too! (Only bigger! hehe.)

We should all do what we can to put a spotlight on the world changers we have in our midst.

in CommunityLend Raises $2.5M on StartupNorth
Congrats Michael, Jennifer, Colin, & Roger!

Malgosia & I have repeatedly said that this venture is the only one that would have brought us back from San Fran to Toronto, apart from Savvica. I think P2P lending's time has come--and I look forward to using the service.

Stick it to those banks!

(Congrats to StartupNorth on the scoop!)
