Stephen,

Thanks for your post on Jetsetter! We love getting user feedback, especially the sort that is as thoughtful as yours.

We're already in the process of re-designing our profile page badge to make it smaller, so look for that update soon.

I think the development philosophy we have used with Jetsetter is to create a solid foundation and then let the community drive new features. I think your ideas are solid and we'll definitely use your advice to drive the application development. We want Jetsetter to evolve with our user base :-)

Talk soon,

Adam

Kevin,

You're absolutely right on this one.

Free speech is all well and good, but it is an American right, and there are nuances to this right (flag burning, etc.).

In Thailand, they get to play by their own rules. If Americans don't think that's right, they don't have to live in Thailand (which I have by the way and it's an amazing place).

There's another issue here, and that is accountability. Are we in favor of anonymous free speech? When Michael Richards goes off on a racist tirade that is captured on video and quickly posted on YT, the result is severe public outrage, a prime-time apology, psychological counseling, and frankly, the loss of massive syndication residuals.

When someone posts a video on YT anonymously, that causes similar angst in Thailand, there is no recourse. Granted, 15 years in prison seems harsh, but I think we also need to consider anonymity and the role it plays in this discussion.

As an American that lived in Thailand for a year, I think I can relate to both sides of this issue.

Kevin, I think you have a point on this one. America often acts with an air of "moral superiority", which only comes across as totally hypocritical when things like Abu Graib and Guantanamo litter the front pages of foreign newspapers.

Why should an American company get to dictate to a foreign government the rights and privileges to which their citizens are entitled?

The fact is, so very few Americans have actually spent any significant time living abroad, they think and act very myopically.

I think the right decision in this case, both morally and economically, is to allow foreign governments to determine what censorships they would like to place on content being made available to their citizenry. If those citizens believe that their rights are being infringed upon in their home state, then they can apply for political asylum in the United States, or immigrate.

Juniper Umm...people criticize their their leaders, often rudely, in many other countries besides America. Maybe YOUR view is a little myopic.

Man, our culture is becoming way too self-absorbed.

Neil,

Great blog, keep it up!

Yeah, I checked out the google new page designs last week and was thoroughly unimpressed...you'd think they could find someone amongst the 10,000+ at the Googleplex that could come up with six decent designs...

Neil, I've looked high and low, but as far as I can tell there this absolutely no place on this blog to get in touch with you without posting a comment... can you shoot me an email? Want to chat offline for a sec.

Thanks,

Adam
