Just a hair. But after reviewing the video (which is awesome, I didn't realize is was THAT crazy up front) i think it was just because I wasn't having "out of my fucking mind" fun like everyone else (submit evidence A: my bruised toes).

So i can sum up my initial reaction to crowd envy. Mind you, not every show needs to be on that level for me to enjoy it. In retrospect, that was a pretty damn good show--even if it was a school-night rave.

I echo the call on shows being so late though. Especially on a weeknight. I'm almost predisposed to go there resentful!

p.s. there definitely was something magnetic about the guy on the left. Love the Luigi reference.

Re: Henry Rollins ‘Provoked’ @ Herbst Theater, 11/6/07

His energy was infectious. He looked like he was about to break into some sort of 'rock rage' with his wide-angled stance, tightly gripped microphone and wild gestures. I especially loved his 12 year old boy sound effects. He really is a (screwed up) kid at heart.

There's no doubt that he's an amazing story teller. He really shines when relating personal or past events. The taxi ride, borrowed condom, discovery of punk rock and Diamond Dave stories made me pee my pants a little. His enthusiasm over the Ruts was just awesome. Watching that video was the cherry on top.

I wasn't crazy about his hypothetical stories though. The 'what-if' scenario on the abstinence-taught couple who got married was all over the place. It was funny, in that you could tell he enjoyed being absurd, but he didn't quite bring it home for me.

Still, I was touched at how open he was. Sharing an inner monologue, his insecurities came flying out for our entertainment. What a kick-ass personal show.

Re: Top 5: Songs that are long and could be longer

start tangent ...

I'm probably not saying anything new here, but Guns n Roses is just SUPER epic. Maybe everyones reaction is "Well, duh!" but I think I fought that reaction for awhile. I told myself that I couldn't take them too seriously since they were over-dramatic grunge-gaudy superstars.

But I give in. I literally have to stop and close my eyes when I hear their songs. This one in particular. Some sort of nostalgic full body experience takes over.

I can't bring myself to see the current GnR. I think it'll hurt.

end tangent ...

Re: Ghostland Observatory @ Mezzanine, 11/29/07

DAMN!!!!!! that was a kick ass show. I just had a little dance attack watching that cell phone video (which is amazingly good quality audio/video).

Their sound and aesthetic leaves NOTHING to be desired. Some of the best dance moves come flowing out of Aaron's body. Plus I love the love-y 'vibe talk' in between sets.

Every show brings this seamless cycle of energy that hits the spot. Whether I'm bouncing up and down, shaking my finger 'no!' (ain't no party in a sad sad city) or swaying lazily; whatever the tempo is, you'll find a goofy grin on my face. I will never miss a show here in SF!!! And, someday, I've got to see them in their hometown AUSTIN.

Re: immigrant, Triple Cobra, and The Frail @ BOTH, 12/7/07

Ok, let's expand on the horrendousness that was The Frail...

I was actually looking forward to seeing them. Their studio sound has a catchy electronic appearance that varies from a sweet emo voice to dance tunes that resemble (though are much weaker than) The Faint. Still it would be a good start to the night ... i thought.

Not so! The lead singer so was so out of his mind that he couldn't even follow the songs. If you were to purposefully try and sing their songs off-key and off beat, i don't think you could do as bad as he did. Even throw in some sweaty faced self-groping and stumbling, flailing dance moves. (why not, he did)

His band even seemed to be embarrassed. Not one of them made eye contact with the lead or the audience EVER throughout the entire performance. Did they pick up this skill in band practice? Not the first time this has happened, perhaps?

Once we were spared this torture (i.e. they ended their 'set') i noticed the keyboardist scolding the lead for his behavior. To which I briefly saw the lead mouth "yeah, but they (pointing to the audience) weren't...." Don't even pretend that you gave the worst performance of your life because the audience wasn't giving you enough love and support. Don't even go there!

On a more positive note, I have to say that I really like Triple Cobra's leads voice. I think it's solid and dynamic. They're getting close to perfecting their sound. They have several songs that are instantly catchy.

Not much more I can say about Immigrant except that they rock. They are ready to be discovered. Somebody discover them goddammit!!!

Re: Dr. Rockso, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Clown

I DO COCAINE!!! The first was fantastic production but VERY professional (if that's the right word). The crowd was pretty calm and appreciative (if you call throwing water on stage appreciative) and Manson was theatrical and kind of ... perfect. He could have shot a video. I loved having the opportunity to stand so close to the stage without having to shove my elbow into anyone's neck. Plus Manson gave us lots of love on our side.

This time, he was more the whacked out rockstar I was expecting as whirled around stage with various expletives and disrobing. Her movie presence has always been unusual and her characters awkward (in a good way). So I figured that might carry over to the stage.

She was anything but awkward. She was so natural and dynamic that it's a wonder that she's a cross-over from acting into music and not the other way around.

Not only did she sound great (she has the right combo of pipes, raspy voice and style) but she performed like the audience had shown up just for her. By that I mean, she gave the same energy that I would expect from seeing someone who had sold the show and was surrounded by adoring fans. It was ridiculous!), but I think a good time can be still be had depending on the company you keep. Festivals can be a great time to hear great tunes, discover new music, hang out with friends, walk around, be outside and people watch. And let me tell you, there were some interesting people to watch. Only in SF would a hippie chick have a french pedicure...

Mind you, if you're bundled up because it's 40 degrees at the end of August... that undeniably sucks.

But yes, festivals just do not compare to the intimate focused setting of an indoor show at say... Mezzanine. I just have to show up with the right expectations. Though to be honest, I think Treasure Island Festival get's as close as you can with an outdoor event. Looking forward to that one.

Re: OTEP registers the most voters on MySpace, wins slot at the DNC

I was just trying to figure out if HRC was being funny or if OTEP really played at the DNC. Hallelujah, praise NIN. [Insert speaking in tongues here] Somebody give me a goddamn candle to light in HIS name. [HIS = TR, of course]

Don't get me wrong, I knew the show was going to be pretty fantastic. I never doubt HRC's taste, but I didn't know it was going to be mind-altering. A totally sober uber-high that I will tell my better-be-music-freaks-or-else grandkids about.

I must have done something right to have been lucky enough to replace someone at the rail. Realizing that this girl was heading downhill I won't lie that sabotage didn't crossed my mind. But instead we gave her a snack bar to try and pick her energy level up but sadly she was yanked out. Sad for her, I mean. Best thing in the world for me.

Not only a virgin-NIN, but also a virgin rail-goer, I now see what all the fuss is about. Worth every second of arriving early, stressing and line-waiting. (even though that was kinda fun too) Being up close makes it so personal. I've never seen such a solid intense performance, perfect vocals combined with brilliant stage props, lights and antics. Really, the show was better than the best rock show I could have imagined. Thank you HRC for bringing me into this experience!

I was wide-eyed and opened-mouthed the entire time. awe. awe. awe. awe. awestruck!

... I just wished he would have played 'Me, I'm Not'. It's really what their sound is about anyway" I am SO glad I went to this acoustic set though for all the reasons you describe. Especially their interaction. The past two performances I've seen, it seems like they kept to their own sides of the stage.

This time it was so intimate I couldn't help but walk away feeling as if we were all friends now. That they sat down and played a set for me.

Plus I was able to really immerse myself in their voices since they didn't have to fight with a wall of sound that usually accompanies their performance. Truly beautiful and often gut-wrenching. I feel a little spoiled.

Oh, and are they not adorably shy? It's such an interesting dynamic when an artist performs so strongly on stage but when the last chord rings on the guitar, they tuck back inside their shell with a shy smile and brief glance to adoring fans. I just want to eat them up. ;0)

Re: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (electric) @ Great American Music Hall, 9/9/08

Did you hear Robert say "we'll see you next time. we'll be back soon"? That got me excited. I need more. Around 5 o'clock I started to think Wait! There's no BRMC tonight? I have to just go home? Noooooooooo

Perfect description of Robert "blurring the boundaries" of stage and audience. The way he plays guitar, holding it up high to his ear as if he needs to hear the sound as it's being made in the hollow body. On more subdued songs he almost caresses it. And to do THAT crouched on the floor 3 inches (no exaggeration) in front of a girl's face? Hello!?! I hope that this girl was just shell-shocked as she surely didn't show any appreciation for that intimate experience. Next time they're at a small venue I'm going for 'rail'.

Robert, please play in my face. In my face! (Sounds almost dirty doesn't it? Maybe it should be. (not the right word...) Though I now think that impression came from how effortless his voice sounds). In reflection I have to say I really appreciated that it was grittier and bare bones on the stage. (Though, I too, struggled to see through the dark shadows on stage) I especially liked that they pushed out the heavier industrial beats and frenetic dancing.

Also loved the juxtaposition between his feminine frame/voice/style and 'manly' 3 day beard! ;0)

Re: Does It Offend You, Yeah? @ Great American Music Hall, 9/18/08

That really is a perfect summary. I was thinking that I should have painted fake eyes on my eyelids (just to be polite.. kinda like a screensaver) and gone into sleep mode to save my energy resources for the main act. Though the last song was redeeming and more in tune with the night's sound like you said.

That evening, the cards were not dealt in my favor. I starting getting tunnel vision/blacking out right when APTBS were coming out (dehydration I think). I was so excited to finally experience this show live that I actually tried to tough it out in the beginning. Alternating between standing at the side of the stage to sitting in the back to try and regain consciousness before standing back up. On the positive side it was kinda fun mixing that with strobe lights. Well worth it. Wish I could have seen the whole show but apparently I needed to pass out.

That's kinda rock'n'roll, right?

Re: The Presets @ Mezzanine, 10/6/08

I'm thinking that the Presets maybe drew a bigger crowd (or at least a more enthusiastic one) than Cut Copy. I respect Raymond's defense of SF music scene (there's no doubt I'm lucky to have access to all the SF provides) but as far as the two arguments that are made, HRCs seems more fact based. More about cause & effect. The effects of SF cost of living and the venue diversification trend are more persuasive arguments than one that denotes Bay Area music goers for some strange reason aren't devoted enough or are more influenced by the sparkly lights of big tours.

Still, it's an interesting point of view.
