in Twitter Founder Biz Stone’s Hilarious Colbert Interview (Video) on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
I do love my Twitter and I loved Stone's definition: "The messaging system we didn't know we needed until we had it."

Best one-liner from Colbert (asking about the first Tweet)..Was it, "What hath god twat?"

in News Flash: The Majority of Mexico is Peaceful on Dave Delaney : Dave Made That
Dave,
Caution is always a great mantra to follow overseas, but you are absolutely correct to advise people not to freak-out over every headline. I would also agree that reading and believing State Department Advisories is good counsel.

While in Guatemala several years back, reports of a police raid and shooting in the village where I was working hit the news in the US. The 'experts' went nutz describing the violent history of the area and how US Citizens should avoid the area. I don't recall that the incident even slowed the pace of normal commerce or conversation in the town.

Putting the shoe on the other foot, we would likely never have a foreign visitor in downtown Nashville if international media responded similarly to every shot fired here.

Dave Delaney Exactly! I failed to mention how detrimental the threat of SARs was to the
Toronto, Ontario and Canadian tourism industry. Americans was scared silly
to travel to Toronto. While the threat was serious, SARs was contained to
hospitals only.

SARs in the media actually ruined my wife's surprise birthday party, because
most of her friends were come from the States.

Thanks for the comment.

in What unique & meaningful value have you gotten out of Twitter? on Mr Tweet Blog
In the period surrounding the #mumbai crisis, several journalists who are relatively new to Twitter (and social media in general) observed, first hand, how powerful this tool can be on a global scale. As a result of those observations and ensuing new connections, there are all sorts of energized conversations about the evolution of online journalism. As for me, this 'means' that my Media Studies' students will receive a heavy dose of Twitter and will begin making similar discoveries this coming semester.

mingyeow My sense is that while that is powerful as an immediate first hand tool, the
noise somewhat renders it much less productive than what it could have been
Do you agree?

in A Content Analysis of Belmont University Student Online Story-Telling on A Content Analysis of Belmont University Student Online Story
A comparative sampling of college newspapers may have given you additional foundations for identifying patterns in publications...a relatively easy sample to obtain.

I would suggest that your friends might not be a representative, 'random' , sample of either Belmont students or Belmont students on facebook... a qualified sampling might have included such factors as 'age of facebook.com' account, degree of engagement on facebook (i.e. xx number of friends, those who have posted at least x-times a month, member of x number of groups, geographic matches with the university's population, etc.)

..on the other hand, instead of your fragile attempt as an armchair psychologist, we might take Vince at his word and see how the 'competitor' handles himself differently the next time things don't go as planned. "Fragile psyche"...good grief.

in Thanks, Chili’s! on Lake Neuron
We have had similar experiences with Chili's that makes me think they are making a concerted effort to excel in customer service. Following an evening with a large group and what I considered exceptional service, I asked to speak with the manager. I let the manager know of the exceptional service and made sure he knew our server (they hear enough complaints...they deserve to hear better news when deserved). A week later when it was just the two of us, we were surprised at the end of our meal with a free desert compliments of the management...to say the least, I was impressed.

I commend you for making the effort to give blood... and encourage you to give more to the Red Cross than to the local mosquito population *grin*. The next time you go in, you might get asked, "Have you ever been deferred from giving blood?", but I doubt that you'll be black-listed.

A ton of comment spam slipped through the Belmont University blog spam protection the last couple of days...we're hoping that the blacklists catch up with the offenders, but for now it's like a cold war of filtering.
