a couple of points:

a) media - agreed; local media is almost completely oppressed, which is why i worry about what part i can play when i eventually come home.

b) i've read a couple of comments saying things like "BN is corrupt, but how do we know other parties will do better?" the answer is that you don't. but no party, especially in a country that calls itself a democracy, should be allowed to have such uncontested power for such a long period of time. no government can rule fairly without checks and balances, and that is what our country is missing. of course we don't know this person will make a better PM than that person, but neither is it fair to point to decisions made in totally separate circumstances and judge how they will do now based on how they did then. hindsight is, after all, 20/20.

the point of su ann's post, as i see it, was that not only are PAS, DAP, etc. not even being given a fair chance in these elections, but neither are we, the people of malaysia. we're not being given a chance to voice our opinions (dissenting ones, that is), and we're not being given the chance to effect the change that we want to see.

c) don't accuse su ann of not doing her research. i've found few people around our age more aware of the way the world works. ;)

just a clarification, adp isn't pre-u - it's actually your freshman year. some colleges clarify by calling it the american degree transfer program, because you transfer your credits at the end of your time there.

and i think northwestern accepted 15 of my credits? i was a sophomore and a half when i got there, lol. fantastic, because it left plenty of space for fun classes that didn't have to count towards my grade (pass/fail) or for light-on-classes, heavy-on-activities quarters. :)

you know who to come to for info on northwestern... ;)

and don't worry about getting in. with strong SAT scores and well-rounded activites (plus, as it goes without saying, well-written personal statements), i don't think you have that much to fear. concentrate on highlighting what makes you unique - US colleges love diversity.

there's been a lot said about the prestige of various schools - only take reputation into account FOR YOUR SPECIFIC INTERESTS - no point going to yale or harvard if the program you want there isn't as fantastic as that of a lesser known school. it's easy to be swayed by the glamour...

and yes, the midwest (i feel) is a tad more friendly, stereotypical as that is....

haha i was emceeing/moderating the seminar sessions so it was hard to be at northwestern's booth for more than a few minutes at a time :(. and no, that bum alvo doesn't seem to be coming back. yeesh. and i'm leaving for the states again tomorrow! nevermind, we shall do a big makan2 thing when everyone is finally around at the same time.

i was in vienna/prague/budapest with my family a couple of years ago. your pictures make me miss it. a lot. ;)

happy birthday! i hope 18 is as wonderful a year for you as i remember it being for me...except hopefully minus the angst, and maybe with less pimples. heh.

good luck with the project. as with anything cold turkey, it's always hard to give up something you love... plan a treat at the end of your one-month milestone? ;)

and just to torture you a bit, i had the most yummy god-knows-what-you-call-it cake the other night that was all chocolate and moussey and had an oreo cookie crust and was really just the epitome of yumminess.
