If I remember correctly, a few times after landing he realized his laptop hadn't shut down and was on for the entire landing. For the next few flights he left it on, and nadda. Why? Because I haven't been a Radiohead fan since Ok Computer years ago but was intrigued to experience the process. The album is classic Radiohead, and I've now loaded up my playlist for the day with a bunch of their old albums. Don't think of it as them losing an album sale (I wouldn't have purchased it). Think of it as customer reclamation. To do that for a cost of $0.00 is a great deal for them.

Re: In Rainbows

I buy a lot of music, happily. I also love live music. Music is a big part of my life. I wouldn't have bought this album, even for $1. Just wasn't interested. I checked it out because of the way it was distributed. I probably should go back and pay some amount, and probably will, but I think the larger point is that the marginal cost of distributing it to me approached zero, and they've won back a fan, will now make money from my transaction, and will benefit from my positive word of mouth.

Re: Favoriting Music

I used to add songs I loved to an iTunes playlist dubbed "The List". I put it on yesterday and realized I haven't updated it in 6 months. I went to bed wishing that there was a smart playlist that created dynamic playlists similar to the way you wish they were broadcast in your lifestream... Include songs that have been played: over the long-term W amount, over the past 3 months X amount, over the past 1 month Y amount , and over the past week Z amount. Where W > X > Y > Z.

It captures my "favourites" accurately, doesn't force me to add the Sir Duke song I bought last week but have listened to 20 times since, and filters for time properly.

Re: My Listening Habits This Year

very cool. know what I always thought would be interesting? some service, whether implicitly or not - most likely a combination of the two, that displayed the progression of your music interests as certain flavours advanced and influenced a deeper interest into a genre.

a band that I like now - let's say of Montreal - has a sound that I wouldn't have liked 2 years ago, but walking down a path of less-severe, yet similar sounding, bands led me to love their distinct flavour. It would be a cool to have a map of those progressions. Maybe a mash-up of last.fm's data synthesized against pandora's analysis of the sound of a band, outputted into a mind-map type display.

Re: Auto Smartlinks

Hi Jer979, it works for Amazon Associate links, there was a small bug associated with the Amazon link in your posts. The options for the right-click menu are automatically populated based on analysis of your browsing habits.

If you'd like to edit the content that appears in the menu when you right-click you can manually edit the list of options presented - to include just your favorite sites - from within the "My Sites" tab in the BlueOrganizer options.

If you need some help with this please drop me a line and I can walk you through the process. And give some thought to installing the new SmartLinks on your TypePad blog - there's a 1-click installation that's simple and then SmartLinks are automatically inserted into your blog posts for links to supported sites.

Re: Auto Smartlinks

One additional thing: the "play" triangle icon for inline mp3 playing is the del.icio.us play tagger. This means they'll only appear when they can deliver benefit to you and your readers.

We had a friend of the company, Anne, nicely describe the benefit of SmartLinks as "reaching across the Internet to pull everything together about the object" and making it all available directly from the site. I thought that was a nice way to put it.

Pairing that with the concept of 'exploding the link' is, as you say, a big deal.

If anyone has any questions on this or would like some help setting it up on their site drop me a note: fraserkelton at the gmail.com

Re: New Smartlink Icons

By the way - I should also add that when you install SmartLinks you get a stats dashboard. Turns out that it was partly my goof - I selected 'different' institutions when I set-up the u/l and then the firefox extension (i.e. "President's Choice Financial" and "President's Choice Financial (English)"... or whatever).

Accounts have been merged and fixed now - thanks for the prompt response.

One request now though: under the accounts in the firefox extension there are two options: upload now & remove from list... how about a third one: "rerecord download process"? That way we can be comfortable that the account is the same, but we can address recording issues.

[I'm nervous to delete the one account to rerecord the process for fear of account duplication!]

Re: The Semantic Web’s biggest problem

"Let’s face it — the biggest problem with the Semantic Web is that it’s as boring as dry toast"

Couldn't agree with you more on this Mathew, although I think you're being polite by comparing it to dry toast. No individual - outside of those who are active in the Semantic Web community - is interested in the plumbing. It's what the plumbing can enable and deliver that will be exciting. The 'magic', so to speak.

I suspect that the magic isn't going to come from semantic search but will come from contextual browsing - understanding the users context and presenting them with (personalized) next steps to directly access relevant and meaningful information.

Re: The Semantic Web’s biggest problem

Both of these posts, made me laugh. Sorry for not approving the comment until April 2. So the April fools Gmail Rant experiment wasn't that great of a success. Bummer. Only 1 comment (other than yours) and a spike to 111 unique visitors - not exactly my best day. People were not fooled at all - in fact, I don't even have any significant outgoing stats to the Gmail Custom Time page. People weren't even curious. They knew about it, dismissed it and moved right on. I did get one additional subscriber and a twitter follower though. hahah. I'll post the stats in an hour or so.

Re: Are Web 2.0 startups wasting their time with Web 2.0 early adopters?

The notion of a high-tech early-adopter has been fractured, which compounds the problem. Barkat, what you're seeing in the post are actually two of our products: SmartLinks and then SmartLink Widgets.

SmartLinks are a blog plug-in that automatically analyzes links and understands when links are about objects: music, movies, books, etc. When the link is about an object it pulls the best information for the object from around the web directly to the website making it available for the reader.

In Marcus' post above he included a link to Amazon and our plug-in recognized that it was actually a link to a book and has pulled together the best information about the specific book directly to the page (click on the blue SmartLink icon next to the link)

The second product is the SmartLink Widget, which can be made for a number of objects and displayed on sidebars. Each item in the widget includes a SmartLink so that readers can instantly find out more information about the item. So in the example of the b5 media widget, readers can click on the SmartLink for a specific blog and instantly find out all about the blog - title, description, author, etc.

Cool stuff, no? Let me know if I can help with anything!

Re: 2007/08/23/adaptiveblue-smartlinks/

Hi Kristen, nice write-up of the various services offered by Adaptive Blue.

Here's a question for you: why didn't you include a smart link within the post rather than (or in addition to) providing screen shots of one?

Re: Blog Comment Systems Galore

I think that disqus is from Y Combinator... it will be fun to watch the two start-ups compete (one techstar, one y combinator).

I was on the same page as you thinking that one was just a skinned version of the other.
