in Are Web 2.0 startups wasting their time with Web 2.0 early adopters? on Futuristic Play by @Andrew_Chen

The notion of a high-tech early-adopter has been fractured, which compounds the problem. Gone are the days when a group can follow the Christensen playbook to achieve adoption amongst early-adopters and use them to traverse into the bigger markets.

We live in interesting times.

A great call to that old friend to recount hilarious stories. A long drive on the highway with the window down and music up. A brutally long run.

Or, what I just did - a trip home to surround yourself with family, friends and familiarity.

I was hoping someone would make the joke about a plane to catch.

Should have asked him why Madden 2001 sucked so much.

Adam, where are you located again? How many opportunities will you have to debate face-to-face with a group like this? I saw how much you spent on Lincoln Park... consider this an investment!

adamposey I'm in Elkins, WV. The drive to LP will take about 3 hours from where I am. Unfortunately, NY is an 8 hour drive or more (factoring traffic, and that I don't know the area, etc.) Like I said man, I would absolutely love to but Linkin Park kind of blew my 'let's go do something spur of the moment' cash fund. So I'm left with the basics for now.

Disappointing.

Do comments work? I should have also added that there will be a surprise out-of-town guest appearance. As if you needed any more incentive.

in Delicious on A VC
uniques may be growing normally through those other channels but I wonder what's happening to engagement/usage. I definitely bookmark a lot less to delicious than I used to (many other channels for saving/sharing content - tumblr, facebook, twitter, ...). I suspect you do as well as do many other long-time users of the service.

would be interesting to see a graph of bookmarks/week over time

You're welcome Jon. I hope the new users appreciate being highlighted and getting a bit of new traffic to their site.

I have a 13" TV in the place that I'm subrenting; maybe I'll hold off on seeing the movie until I find a better way to enjoy flicks.

in Why do we like to collect music? on Mathew's comments
From what I've heard from many music fans, the cultural attachment to possessing music (probably the same trait that in the extreme drives one to collect 3 gazillion songs) has been the major impediment to music dial-tone.

It's not a question of whether they'd hoard if they had access, but that they're resisting streaming because they hoard.

Leigh Besides how would my 7 year old at the time be able to ask me about my really big CD collection and get into Jimmy Hendrix if not for music hoarding?

in Comments or Discussions? on A VC
When I think of my favorite blogs over the years I rarely recall the posts. It's all about the discussion. Chartreuse's site is the perfect example of this. Sometimes I wonder what Seth's site would be like if he enabled comments.

in The Semantic Web’s biggest problem on Mathew's comments
"Let’s face it — the biggest problem with the Semantic Web is that it’s as boring as dry toast"

Couldn't agree with you more on this Mathew, although I think you're being polite by comparing it to dry toast. No individual - outside of those who are active in the Semantic Web community - is interested in the plumbing. It's what the plumbing can enable and deliver that will be exciting. The 'magic', so to speak.

I suspect that the magic isn't going to come from semantic search but will come from contextual browsing - understanding the users context and presenting them with (personalized) next steps to directly access relevant and meaningful information.

in New Smartlink Icons on A VC
By the way - I should also add that when you install SmartLinks you get a stats dashboard. It shows not only the objects that are most popular on your site but also includes the Web Wide Popularity Dashboard that allows you to discover the most popular items online.

in New Smartlink Icons on A VC
Glad you like them :) Not only are they simple to install but SmartLinks aren't inserted in the post unless we recognize the object. This means they'll only appear when they can deliver benefit to you and your readers.

We had a friend of the company, Anne, nicely describe the benefit of SmartLinks as "reaching across the Internet to pull everything together about the object" and making it all available directly from the site. I thought that was a nice way to put it.

Pairing that with the concept of 'exploding the link' is, as you say, a big deal.

If anyone has any questions on this or would like some help setting it up on their site drop me a note: fraserkelton at the gmail.com

in Twitter's business model (Scripting News) on Scripting News
There's been an interesting discussion over the past few weeks on our (AdaptiveBlue's) blog about what's most critical for a start-up to deliver first - good code, utility, end-user value, etc.

It's a good back and forth between a number of people discussing the merits of distribution, value proposition, code, etc. Twitter, and more specifically your point Dave, is referenced a few times. Worth the read: http://blog.adaptiveblue.com/?p=765#comment-92904
