in 25 Ways Social Media Prepares You for the Downturn on Chris Brogan
Yes, someone mentioned LinkedIN but I saw the photo and that's all I could think about. If you are looking for a job buff up your LinkedIN profile. If you are looking for company advice a good place to find it is LinkedIN answers. Lots of good people willing to answer questions and give advice to others who are worried about staying afloat.

I linked to a few of them in my post today. It's also a good way to build a network, subscribe to the answers that best match the category where you can give useful answers and take a few minutes to go through them twice a day and give answers. Helping people will make you feel better *and* help them make better decisions with great information.

I say let me help you, well, anyone really. I love being helpful and it's seems natural to reach out and make others day better.

Give and take builds relationships and eventually trust, when that trust is present you have gain a community, quite a few reliable and dependable friends and a network of people to reach out to.

Oh and thanks for the mention.

What Emilio has done is give people a way to connect to someone they need in the way that works for them.

Jon does that for me. He surprised me when he managed it. Overcoming my resistance to something is a mean feat. And just because he calls it chocolate milk doesn't make it any less meaningful or loving.

Just as the gift of hearing that family member Emilio might record in the hospital later on is just that a loving caring gift delivered in a different way.

in How Not To Treat Your Fans on Matthew Ebel
"None of THOSE people committed felony copyright infringement"

Mr. Cheese is worried about copyright infringement because he assaulted someone. He spit on his fans and broke one guy's camera with his "act". This is a bit beyond lies and he said/everyone said.

Matthew as a performer is ALWAYS aware that cameras may be on and is very gracious about fans that want to record, so much that he allowed a couple of us to turn some into an album.

If you don't feel like sharing that's fine, just don't assault people and don't break things and please just announce beforehand that cameras aren't allowed. After sometime organizing events, I've never had anyone deny my request that the rules be followed with a good explanation and civility.

I'd like to see your thoughts on how we can make a difference with all of this. A difference to people who need it, not just businesses and starting conversation.

I love reading what you do come up with so I'm not fussy. :)

This is what makes you genuine and a good friend as well as a watchtower for your company to do right by consumers. I like the stance that the Student Loan Network takes on helping people and not padding their bottom line.

Thanks for watching out for people.

Haha. Of course it would look better as an osprey.

Here's my thoughts on this, which is related but not the same. I'll admit I'm barely following people back these days.

Part of it stems from having 1200 followers that I could follow back, but then knowing if I did I wouldn't be able to hear the people that are speaking to me very well. Mr. Penn and I were talking about this yesterday and he's sorta applied Dunbar's Law. You can have meaningful relationships with 150 people before things start getting nutty. Sure we all want to make everyone feel meaningful in social media but we CAN'T. Not reasonably.

At this point what makes me follow someone is having a personal connection with them before hand or if what they are doing is very interesting. I won't follow users who have a huge number of followers unless they are a company I'm interested in listening to.

*breathes* You asked. ;)

Dunkin really caved and it gave off the sense that they didn't care or have the bandwidth to deal with the issue in a way that made them stand up against right wing crap.

Best quote in the Globe article? ‘‘The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad,’’ Malkin yowls in her syndicated column."

Ha! Malkin + yowling = brilliant description!

in How Mass Email Works on Chris Brogan
Chris,

I could never see you as a spammer when you're reaching out with the best interests in heart. Sadly those best interests don't come out to everyone in the email. :/

I didn't feel spammed, but a bit confused why I was getting the email when I've already subscribed. That, as several have pointed out, is a different matter than spam. It's more about list maintenance.

One of the best things about you is your willingness to really think about these things rather than dismissing them as noise. Just another reason we know you're about community.

in Watch this Justin.tv video from PodCamp NYC on Christopher S. Penn's Awaken Your Superhero
What those at justin.tv pulled was completely disrespectful of not only Whitney, but the community. They knew that the space was for sponsors, who funded Podcamp with not only their money but with their belief in what Podcamp stands for and it's strength in the new media space.

I hope they won't be dissuaded by the immature actions that we've seen here from participating in the future.

in The Dual Mandate of PodCamp on Christopher S. Penn's Awaken Your Superhero
I think a big issue is that those of us who DO know about new and social media are making these connections for the second and third time.

Podcamp to me is becoming an event that I help organize, not one that I attend. Organizers are essential to the event, but if you want to help out and volunteer please be clear what is involved. Make that commitment knowing what goes into the event and being willing to make the effort.

That said, we need to have content for the veterans and people who are willing to teach those who are new. I'm hoping we can make some headway with that at Podcamp Boston 3 in July.

I don't know the answers yet, but Nathan Burke had some interesting questions regarding FriendFeed and being authentic online. He wonders if it's even possible and if presence management isn't called for.

Some great questions: http://blogstring.com/2008/03/26/dramaturgical-...
