in Picture of the Day: Product Placement on Zatz Not Funny!
I liked the old crash mode a lot more. Slingbox: thank god you didn't take the Gilette route and purchased van-style marketing. I hate crashing into those damn things.

I decided on the new cardo s800 since it handles 9 parings -- I really need to be able to pair up to my laptop, cell phone, internet tablet, ps3, and desktop. :)

in TiVo “Hooks Up” With PayPerPost on Zatz Not Funny!
Don't worry, they've obviously been paying HBO to feature tivo on "Tell Me you Love Me". Even to the point of compromising the story -- the anniversary gift for one of the main characters was a Series2. There seems to be at least 1-3 shots of a tivo every EP.

Heh, yeah, critically, the professional will commit the same errors a homeowner would? I mean, come on, are these guys just paid-by-the-job hot-off-the-street subcontractors? :) If so, why would I trust them with wiring up my house, again?

The browsing is distracting under firefox in Linux -- the images flash when you change from image to image. I don't see this with picasa web albums. (plus they are cheaper to boot)

It'd be nice to pay a combined subscription for a library as deep as Rhapsody alongside a recommendation engine as 'smart' as pandora.

Its not much more expensive to just blow $240 on a 750gb disk and enclosure at Microcenter after rebate. (Seagate 750gb and $25 powerspec esata enclosure with cable)

Is it just me, or is nettwerk's site cheaper than amie street at this point? Why should I pay $15 for mp3 files when I can pay $10 for the *same* album as mp3 files on nettmusic.com?

They even have FLAC for some of the albums!

in Dave Nabs Xbox 360 For $200 (Sort Of) on Zatz Not Funny!
If you sign up for 1 year of $25/mo vonage, you get a $200 voucher to use immediately. So in the end you'd get a free xbox360, a vonage adapter (free with rebate), and 12 months of vonage service for ~$325. Not exactly breaking even, but figure for $125 more you can replace your POTS phone service for $10 a month for a year -- since you were going to spend $200 anyhow on that Xbox360

in iPod Celebrates Birthday, Dave Prepares For His on Zatz Not Funny!
Many of the new GPS units are far better than 10 minutes these days, even my non-sirf based Garmin etrex vista pops up in less than 2 minutes usually. I know SIRF based chipsets can do it in 30 seconds these days from cold start.

in Dave’s Dilema: What to do with the Series3? on Zatz Not Funny!
We got one -- its massively better than the motorola PVR. Remember, the latest firmware fiasco broke HDMI/DVI! (if you are in the Twin Cities/Comcast)

Yeah, the release announcement should be coming sometime soon I hope. Its too bad its soooooo expensive, but my S1 is starting to die (s-video is cutting out for 60 seconds sometimes while watching recorded shows) so my wife has blessed the purchase, thankfully. :)

in The Technology Liberation Front » Archive » RE: Phishing for Solutions to Online Crime on The Technology Liberation Front
I'm sort of surprised that you think a market doesn't exactly exist. Look at the IETF MARID group, which is quickly coming up with a standard to attempt to quash such attacks by making it hard to fake @yourbank.com. Microsoft, yahoo, pobox.com, earthlink, aol, and others are all evaluating technologies that verify that the sender is correct and will stop phishing scams that misrepresent the senders email address. It is expected that as soon as a standard is easily configured on the majority of mailservers that the major players will require it to communicate messages with their users.

There's a market, and the technology is coming.

In any case, most phishing attacks are a form of fraud because of the misrepresentation of identity -- I'm fairly sure that is covered (gasp!) under the CAN-SPAM act.

in The Technology Liberation Front » Archive » So you say nothing has changed in the telecom world? on The Technology Liberation Front
BPL has a long hard road to follow too. I don't think the FCC is allowing BPL to go past the 'testing' stage just yet -- it causes harmful interference to existing radio services such as Amateur Radio, millitary, and other uses.

Power companies have not been able to contain their systems within the FCC Part 15 rules, either.
