Talk about popping their balloon! I wrote about it in my event recap on Read/Write Web. A lot has to happen yet if Web 2.0 is to go mainstream, and this study should certainly jolt a lot of the extreme-elites out there back into reality.

regards,
Graeme
www.tech-surf-blog.com

Re: Come to Defrag

Zoli, look forward to meeting you here at Defrag (about to start up as I write this)...

Re: Farting Our Way Through the Recession?

totally agree, Zoli... I tweeted about this the other day, linking to a story on the insanity

hell, Jobs doesn't care: he makes 30 points off of this junk! and of course loves what it does to sell more hardware....

after this story broke, I just had to go out of my way to happily blog about a new app that actually *does* do something useful... what a concept, huh?
http://graemethickins.typepad.com/graeme_blogs_...

cheers,
Graeme

Re: WSJ: The Economics of Giving it Away

Chris Anderson has a charming way of stating the most excruciatingly obvious stuff, doesn't he? Remember, this is him writing here -- not the Wall Street Journal. He is simply a guest author.

His point, as I see it, is that the focus now has to be on the business model. (Agree: big huge duh.) Too bad he doesn't cite some examples of newer Internet business models that are, in fact, working (rare as they may be). But is "freemium" all there is?

It seems Anderson is putting out a call that more creativity is needed here. It's amazing how many 'Net entrepreneurs don't focus more on the hard question of "what will people pay for." Identifying customer pain points is great, but I think overly simplified.

The next question has to be: Will doing away with such pain mean said customer will unload some cash?

cheers,

Graeme

Re: WSJ: The Economics of Giving it Away

yep, I agree, Matt -- determining *how much* of a pain point a customer has is important... to try to ascertain what they will actually be willing to pay for

that's why customer research is so important -- nothing beats getting out there and talking to customers... but the beautiful thing about the Internet is that it offers many ways to do that even when you can't get face-to-face with enough of them to do adequate research

sorry I missed you today at our Social Media Breakfast! so much going on, and so many people that want to talk! let me know if you're up for coffee sometime soon... I want to hear about what cool things you are up to

cheers,

Graeme

Re: I’m bummed I’m not at Demo

demo rocked

screw Switzerland

Re: What is social media?

I think Chris Kenton in #10 brings out key points:

"The trend toward attaching 'social' to media is important because it signifies an important shift in how public content is controlled, shaped and consumed...." and

"I think it’s a little too early to make pronouncements about how important the term 'Social Media' is ... to the vast majority of business people, marketers, and consumers at large, it’s still an emerging concept."

So true. It's going to take mainstream business quite a while to catch up. So many companies now need help, and will need help ongoing, in understanding how to deal with this massive shift.

And I also like the points Paul Medoza raises in #23:

"But does the perceived value of the information go down as more of it is available? I often wonder that because of how much information is available on the internet today for free. The only cost is the time it takes to find it now."

That is a major point: time is the unit of value in play here. How does one decide how to spend one's increasingly precious time? That's why technologies to help individuals and companies measure influence in new media will become so critical.

Re: The future of Moveable Type, Vox, TypePad, and Live Journal

I agree with Ben (comment #4) -- they need to pick it up on the Typepad front. Not good to be stagnant.

Typepad, we love you, but we want more, more, more... :-)

Congrats to Chris on taking the CEO reins -- he's a great guy, and I look forward to seeing more of the good things he'll be doing there...

Thanks for the post, Robert -- see you at The Palace
next week?

Re: Where the hell is Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook?

Robert, I've been wondering the very same thing. I worked side-by-side with him pre-launch in '99/'00 as interim content director. He's right, the original vision was a good one; Brad was a believer, and a great leader. Lord knows a lot of water has gone over the dam since then for BestBuy.com (and how many umpteen billions in sales, too).

Today, things would be hugely different. But I also know there are a lot of great folks in that company now with their hearts (and minds) in the right place re: social media. They get it, they know the online world has changed, and there are better ways to do retail online...and they're working hard to make things better there. I think it would be cool if you came here to Minneapolis and met with them. We would gladly host you for one of our Social Media Breakfasts! ....which Best Buy often hosts, God bless 'em.

Many of those Best Buy folks have already commented above or been mentioned; so, we know they're listening and participating. The best comment of all 'em, though, was from my buddy Gary Koelling: "Thank you, sir. May I have another?" Laughed my ass off!

Hope you're having fun at Web 2.0 -- I can see you right there by the escalators.

cheers,
Graeme
www.twitter.com/graemethickins

Re: Joseph Jaffe Interview

thanks, Lee -- such a comprehensive interview that I won't feel bad about missing the event at the Fine Line tonight....

cheers,
Graeme
www.tech-surf-blog.com

Re: How Community Building Boosts SEO

Hi, Lee - I think what you said here is a good summation: "Community building with SEO effects in mind isn

Re: Twitter: Where Nobody Knows Your Name

And at a wedding in Silicon Valley, all the people would've been Twittering in the audience...to the pastor.
