Exactly. The idea that a company can go it alone and simply ignore their competition is long gone.

Not sure why people are not simply trying the file shares. They usually work well in this situation. (Not sure why those wanting to give content away don't simply use this method in the first place.)

in Send Your Dents to Twitter Automatically! on Oh, Identi.ca!
http://jeffmcneill.com/2008/08/25/twitter-to-la...

I am new to the bridge thing, which essentially are one way feeds of dents from identi.ca or Leo Laporte’s army.twit.tv or any other laconica installation.

From what I can tell there are currently three ways of doing this bridge, though I am sure this will multiply very soon, and I likely have missed a few (please add them in the comments).

* Build your own with the rss feed from any laconica instance, for example http://identi.ca/jeffmcneill/rss and TwitterFeed http://twitterfeed.com

* Ken Sheppardson’s bridge at http://bridge.kshep.net/ currently works with identi.ca accounts (there is a drop-down list which may include additional laconica servers to choose from at this point)

* Brad Williams has a bridge over at webdevstudios http://webdevstudios.com/update-twitter-from-yo... . Currently this is for identi.ca only.

How many employees will you recruit from this article? I am continually impressed by the Spoolsky smarts.

What is with this linkbait article? This is sad, since there are good things on this blog.

in Advice for Managing Negative Reviews of Hotels or Small Businesses on Marketing Pilgrim
This is exactly how to do it. People need a forum to say both good and bad things. Responses by management are needed for both to be heard (and encourage additional posting. People seeking information need to see both the good and the bad. And the very transparent and public approach of seeing the responses by management increases the sense of trust that things which are not always perfect will be taken care of.

My only nit is the tone of the management, which is to my sensibility overly formal, but that may be the way the brand wants to be conveyed.

Great post!

I really appreciate Mashable, however you folks miss the point on Wikia Search. It's currently a set of loosely joined technologies and not a mainstream product. It is meant to be an open source platform that will allow developers and editors together to build an alternative to proprietary search. It is not, as yet, a mainstream product and should not be evaluated as such. Have a developer do the review of this one...

Aloha Chris, good article. One thing to include is the possibility that we will change the way we interact with these applications. The notion of "keeping up" is not sustainable across the plethora of locations. However, perhaps this could be supplemented by other possibilities. Stowe Boyd has some great ideas on this: http://www.stoweboyd.com/message/2007/06/steve_... and http://www.stoweboyd.com/message/2007/06/lauren...

Because I laugh out loud or go oooh and ahhh, and then immediately want to share it with my friends. I then think who will have the same visceral experience as I did, and blog it, email link, del.icio.us it, or all three.

Of course this is just saying the same thing as the basic description. We are dealing with an experience that people have, which is relevant in some way, and profound at some level.

Something new in a new way or told in a new way. New new new.

in What’s next? Facebook vs. Linked In on Scobleizer
Aloha Robert,

I see all three of these as important platforms. While MySpace can be annoying, Facebook is a fairly clean interface and quite useful. LinkedIn is a little quirky, but can usefully make the social networks visible.

None of these will be a waste of time, especially with the kind of leverage MySpace and Facebook are waving around during negotiations...
