in FAQs on World Beta
Sometimes the description of the methods are not entirely clear. A recent example is the "hedged rotation". I had always thought that hedged meant "...technique of taking two positions that will offset each other if prices change". My understanding was, of course, incomplete.

It took several readings of the post before I figured out what you meant.

In the FAQ, it would be nice to detail the rules (for each variation) laid out in steps 1,2,3, etc.

in Spam Invades Twitter Trends, Again on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
This isn't spam. As pointed out over at TechCrunch it's related to the death of Molly Sugden, the well-loved British comedy actress who died recently. She played a character by the name of Mrs Slocombe in the classic comedy Are You Being Served. One of the long-running jokes in the show were the frequent references to her ‘pussy’, meaning her cat.

Why are people saying that this is spam when the number 1 trending topic is in fact spam organised by a company over the giveaway of a laptop for promotional purposes. Pick on them instead!

in BrothersJudd Blog: NOW YOU'RE TALKIN': on Brothersjudd Forum
Two hours. Oh great. To get to Chicago's Union Station from just about anywhere in the Chicagoland area is a 1 to 1.5 hour drive. And then you have to park. Except there are no parking spaces. And the parking lots cost $12 - $15 a day---or more.
Of course, you could take a commuter train---if you happen to live near one of the stations in the suburbs. Wait an average of 1 hour for the next train (less during rush hour), then another hour to get to the downtown station.
Any way you cut it, that's more like 4 hours of total travel time.

Or, you could hop in your car and take 5 hours.

in Michael Jackson vs. Iran on SCOOP44
Only comparable to John Lennon? Are you f-ing shitting me?! I have two more words for you: James Brown.
I admit he had his impact on the pop world, but seriously MJ has nothing doesn't come close to those two and a few others. And yes it's pretty damn sad that the freak is apparently more important than what's going on in Iran, lets just hopr that will soon pass, like in the next few hrs.

Liz Cermak You are right, I did not mean to have the word "only" in there, that was an editing mistake on my part. I changed it after reading your comment. :)

in Filings Disclose Goldman Sachs' AIG Collateral Demands Were Reason For AIG Implosion on Zero Hedge
It sure isn't.

But you know what? It isn't the job of Government to preserve the two strongest IBs either. The cold, hard reality is that GS would be out of business if AIG hadn't been made whole by us tax payers. They were levered up high enough and people were scared enough and counterparties were fucked enough that they would have blown.

At the very least there would have been a major shakeup at the company.

Now we are back to business as usual, but better, but with 1/2 the competition, or less depending on what you think BofA will end up doing to Merril.

Cheers,
prat

Assetman Yep... that is exactly right.... agree with all your points, praetorian.

Goldman went into levering into these CDS agreements with AIG full well knowing that the latter could go bankrupt-- and that the risk of counterparty payment was a very serious risk.

But Goldman took that huge bet anyway. Why would anyone take a huge risk of counterparty failure, even if they were right on the direction of the trade? As actions have illustrated, the US government has subsidized billions of taxpayer dollars to cover Goldman's back and ensure a huge return on unlimited risk. If you or I were making these bets in our PA's, do you think our government would come in and save us? Yeah, right.

Simply put, neither AIG nor Goldman should have been taking these levered bets on such large amounts. In Darwinian terms, neither is fit to "survive". Yet one survives, and one prospers.

Someone is taking in the pooper... and chances are it's you.

in A Primer For Hacking Twitter on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Huh?

The national TV and all major news media have been hacked for decades, actually they've been technically OWNED, by mega-corporations... and so is the US "elections" duopoly called a democracy where you're free to choose as long as it's between diet Coke or regular...

Is Twitter robust enough for what? Instill common sense into the average Joe's brain?
I'm afraid once again you're missing the big picture... And looking for solutions to problems in the wrong places.

in Health Care Co-Op’s: Doing It the Right Way on Fix Health Care Policy
Big insurance always does lobbying to make the co-ops illegal, ineffective, or untenable. That's the problem with the big companies, too much money for lobbying. The time is now, unfortunately. Co-ops would have been great 5 or 10 years ago, now things have taken a terrible turn for the worse.

in The Cost of Obama’s Health Proposal on Fix Health Care Policy
Sounds great. Less than what we are spending now, and much less than what we expect to spend in 5 or 10 years in the current system. Employers will have more money, savings will go up, bankruptcies down(which means more profit for businesses).

Woo!

in We’ve Got Tools to Undo Censorship in Iran and China. Let’s Use Them on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Now, that's cute...

I love it when tech people try to talk about politics... FYI: Censorship has NOTHING to do with technology.

It's not about finding new ways to be anonymous online, it's about getting off your ass and participating in the politic reality of life... It's about getting in the street and doing your civic duties, it's about opening your eyes and look at your own government and analyzing what's going own in your backyard, it's about pressuring your own politicians to do the right things...

You think there's no censorship in the US? Everyone's walking head down playing around with their tech gizmo completely oblivious to what's going on in the world. iPod zombies...

We sure went from the knowledge era to the info era... Everyone's going into infooverload mode and completely lacks any real understanding and knowledge of anything...

I give you the slaves of the 21st century...

alexandre van de sande It has everything to do with technology. It was no coincidence that long living large scale democracy was only possible in the 17 century with the advent of large scale communication and print.

We are talking about giving tools to the iranians to do exactly what you said, get their asses out on the street, organize themselves, spread the word about fraud. You have to shake your ass to do that but your odds are greatly increased with technology.

Censorship and political apathy are two separate things. You can organize protests via twitter, if you want to is a different story - maybe there are "iPod zombies" oblivious to the world around them - but then that's their choice. And maybe if the issue is worth it they will do something - as we seen them do.
Andrea Well said!

good catch polizeros.

I'll have to ask my Iranian friend what it means (she makes sense to me because her analysis usually revolves around who stands to lose/make money - seems that just like right-wing religious nutjobs here, the ayatollahs lead lives of the rich and famous, Iranian style)

in The M That Would Never Exist- The 2010 BMW X6 M on Zero Hedge
BMW died when the last e30 rolled off the assembly line.

Bangle, a v8 in the m3, a 1 series that looks like a chopped 3 series and has nothing to do with the 2002, an x series that drives like a benz, trunks that look like chryslers, and, always and everywhere, japanese looking headlights.

AlexMc Indeed! I owned 6 E30's in my time. They were the best.. and my white 1988 M3 was a true sports car. A homologation vehicle no less.

The only affordable car on the road these that is a purist machine is a Lotus.

A sad state of affairs in Munich.

Perhaps he should have said "willingly" rather than "knowingly".

When we fly in/out of our closest regional airport (Little Rock), the first leg is always puddle-jumper for 1 hour flight to either Dallas or Atlanta. That puddle jumper is either Embraer or Bombardier, depending on which airline it is. We have no choice in the matter---unless we made a 5 hour drive to Dallas.
