On the other claw, this was during a period when they didn't really pay much attention to Bruce's childhood tragedy, and Bruce didn't obsess over it all the time. Losing track of that hook may have been why the Bat-books were on the verge of cancellation for most of the early '60s.

Funny, in the '60s, they paid more attention to SUPERMAN'S childhood tragedy than Batman's. It was all about Tragic Lost Krypton, Jor-El and Lara's Brave Sacrifice, wah wah wah. Superboy stories invariably referred to the Kents as his "foster parents" -- even when Clark is thinking to himself.

Re: Oath-a-palooza.

I thought that Alan used the "shed my light over dark evil" in his origin story, too, but I might be wrong.

And... of the ones above, I have to say that "In brightest day" works best for me. A few years ago, I might have voted for one of the others, but after hearing John Stewart invoke it in Justice League... whoa.

Still, I have a fondness for Rot Lop Fan's oath:

"In loudest din or hush profound,
my ears catch evil's slightest sound.
Let those who toll out evil's knell,
beware my power:
The F-Sharp Bell!"

Re: Knowledge is Power.

Doc:

He doesn't actually SAY "mind wipe". Maybe he doesn't want the competition.

Everyone Else:

Yeah, pretty much. Lightning is a lot slower than c, and a normal human's neural responses are even slower. If Barry's powers knock his nervous system transmission times up to light speed, that would give him ample time to perceive and react.

"An endless gallery of statues", indeed.

Re: Bat-Alanis

Okay: yes, two black-haired parents could have a red-haired son, because the genes for black hair are dominant, and the genes for red or blonde hair are recessive.

On the flip side, on Batman Beyond, both of black-haired Terry McGinnis's parents have red or reddish-brown hair, which ISN'T likely. That JLU epsiode that revealed that Terry was really Bruce's biological son, thanks to gene tampering by Amanda Waller? That was foreshadowed.

Re: International Law

Illegal? The usual excuses a generous person might allow a Golden or Silver Age story simply don't apply here. It's not innocent subtext, it's not misinterpreting something directed at kids.

I've been a Dr. Fate fan since the '70s, with that magnificent Walt Simonson First Issue Special. I was really enthusiastic about the character's Post-Crisis revival -- but I had to drop the book. The whole Creepy Stepmother Seduction angle turned me off. As soon as the Strausses were shuffled off, and Inza Nelson took on the mantle, I was right back.

But, seriously - WHAT were they THINKING??

Re: Take a Memo, Lois.

Man, I want scans of that whole comic.
