at the museum of Science and technology in Ottawa they have a complete mechanical telephone exchange along with 2 rotary phones that can call each other. You can actually use it and see how the number of pulses triggered the relays and other mechancial bits into establishing the connection..

Watching Harper's TV address last night made me angry. This man has got to go.

This man says one thing in English, and another in French. Either he is speaking french phonetically off a teleprompter and has no idea what he's saying, or he's simply too stupid to realize the percentage of the Canadian population that is bilingual and can hear the difference.

My money's on the second option, but either way, he's out.

I've never been into politics much, but I must say this whole situation fascinates me. It amazes me to no end how much we collectively don't know about our political system.

Sad thing is, our collective ignorance seems to be outweighed by the ignorance of the person currently holding the title of Prime Minister. If anyone should know the game, it is he. If he's genuinely surprised at either the opposition or the public backlash to his platform, he has no business living at 24 Sussex.

I look forward to seeing "Ex" in front of Mr Harper's title.

to Robin's point about interviews like Tyffany being all too rare - I agree wholeheartedly!

But you know how that interview came about? SHE approached US! Yup. She responded to the general "Ping us if you'd like to talk about your show" email we send to everyone who submits to canadapodcasts.ca .

So, the onus was, and was excerised by her. Had she not contacted us, we may have not even known she wanted to be heard.

It's a great example of Mark's point.

And here we were, thinking we had convinced Aunt Mabel not to click on unknown emails on her PC.. but we didn't tell Mabel about facebook apps. I don't blame facebook (for once)..

A big chunk of whatever was on a personal PC on 2005 is now on facebook or other web services.. Doesn't matter if it's a local file, or a "Hug your favourite wombat" link, people are click-happy, and they will continue to click until they get burned...

It always amazes me the different behavior of software on similar platforms.. You and I have a very similar setup, and you've had nothing but headaches, and I've been far luckier.

i've not had anywhere close to these kinds of problems, and I do a 3-way sync: mac bb LotusNotes...

what keeps me away from the iphone option is the fact that you have to hack it to use it in Canada. One quick decision by Steve Jobs or Ted Rogers turns it into a very expensive brick.

the good thing is you've scared me into doing more regular backups..

I applaud the people behind this initiative. It was a nice gesture, and while I was one of those who hadn't (yet) contributed, I was shocked to hear that someone would actually have a problem with it and express their disapproval. There's no room for that.

That being said, As with any group of people, the podcasting community has people with all kinds of opinions and motivations. I refuse to believe that the negative comments of a few people (I hope it was a few) is a sign of our community being in big trouble.

Even though the result of this experiment was less than was hoped, let's not fall into the trap of assuming we have a huge problem in our community when we may not. I firmly believe that the podcasting community is blessed with many good people, probably more than many groups. We've seen many examples of this at different times (book drives, snowsuit funds, missing cameras, etc..) .

Should someone's lack of willingness to contribute to this particular campaign mean they aren't good people or that this isn't a great community? I sure don't think so.

It's sad to see an initiative not reach it's goals, but I've seen too many successes in this space to change my opinion about our community.

Great post Mark! Too many people suffer from this kind of bullying, and sadly, many people don't know what to do when this happens to them.

There's still a lot of bravado on the net, we need to keep in mind that as lines blur between "real life" and "life online", not only does it make everyone an easier target for this stuff, it also makes it easier to push back.

We all want to be first, and it's humbling when we announce that we are and then told we're not. We so desperately want some moniker attributed to our work, yet that's hard to do when the body of work is too young to speak for itself. This is a classic example of "old PR" vs "New Social media PR".. In olden times, you put a claim up, and no one (other than lawyers) could really call you on it publicly. Those days are gone. You'd better be sure about anything you put on the net, as the world is potentially watching. If not the world, then at least a few cached histories..

If they had said "We're the BEST children's book show".. at worst they would have seemed arrogant, at best the debate would have caused people to listen. At least the discussion would be about the topic at hand: the show. Now, the discussion is about playing nice in the social media space.

This is the time of social media, if you want to be in the pool, prepare to swim. The right reaction in this "Everything's on the net for all to see" time we're in is to be gracious, acknowledge the misstep, and give real reasons why your show/blog/whatever should be on our radar.

I'm not a lawyer, but screen shots need to be authorized?? If anyone wants to see the original web site (with it's arrogantly erroneous claim) go to google's chached version ( http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:TVCNOJDvCe... ) surely you authorized GOOGLE to use it..

All is not lost, an honest mea-culpa, a show of commitment to honesty, and this all goes away. Welcome to the web, hope you enjoy your stay.

I was actually an Archos guy.. They came out with a hard disk based player about a year before Apple.. The last one though, wasn't quite doing it for me, and I needed more HD space..

For recording, the iRiver/Archos beat the crap out of the iPod, regardless of the accesory you plug into it.. Maybe because Mark and I have both professional-grade flash recorders we don't need a multi-faceted machine anymore - a good player is fine...
