The problem with most "bad practices" documents is that almost without exception they exceed the boundaries of their own definitions.

Witness the title, which apparently refers to only SQL and PL/SQL and then the following claims which have *nothing* to do with SQL or PL/SQL and are all about database and application *design*:

Storing ROWIDs for later reference,
Storing an empty LOB instead of NULL,
Use of magic numbers and strings instead of NULL.

Talk about confusing the confused...

and the press release is now impossible to obtain, or at least after 5 minutes it still hasn't shown up in my browser. Wonder why...

Really hope someone senior enough at Oracle starts reigning in their marketing! Unbelievable.

what totally drives me up the wall with most of the social networking sites is their inability to understand that someone might actually want to CANCEL an account!

The vast majority don't let you turn off or delete your "own" account. That is so against the most basic rules of web management that quite frankly any of them gets my downed thumb just for that!

This reminded me of Prime Computer's "cnt" files back in the mid 80s.

Whereby someone in marketing decided that would be a nice suffix for files created with contiguous space allocation.

The idea lasted until the first internal meeting of worldwide data management specialists. Whereupon we painfully explained what it would really mean...

It got promptly replaced by "con"-suffixed files. That's when I decided to leave the company...

I often wonder how is it that stupid ideas such as these "snaps" get the time of day to even show up as a feature, let alone a default?

I mean, who is the unadulterated, unabbreviated moron who has come up with the "research" to show something like this as viable, user friendly or even remotely desirable?

Are these podcasts available from somewhere else? 12MB at 20KB/s is w-a-a-a-y too slow but seems to be the tops searchoracle can do...

Dunno about other ball sports. But soccer is one of the few team sports out there that is incredibly easy to understand and play at any level. Anyone can pick up a round ball and kick it in a general direction. The rules are not overly complex either and as for venues: any reasonably wide flat surface where one can run will do for starters. You should have seen some of the places in Africa we played soccer in, when I was a kid!

It has become extremely popular with everyone around the world mostly because of ease: it's easy to understand, easy to relate to the experiences the players have, easy to play at any time and for however long one wants. Very few other sports can claim all those at the same time. LArge audeinces can relate to that.

The myth that a ball sport needs high scoring to be exciting is just that: a myth. A superb soccer game can easily be goalless or nearly. I'm reminded of the match between Brasil and England in the 1970 world cup: Brasil won 1-0, but that game has never left my memory as one of the best all out shows of soccer skills and tactics I've ever seen.

I don't get it: apparently according to this genius, SQL Server is "better coded" (whatever the heck that means). Yet, in the same article he mentions that because Oracle can run in optimistic locking as fast as SS does in pessimistic locking, SS needs to "otpimize its code a little bit".

I just wish that for once someone with a clue about IT reviewed this sort of paper before it's let out. Having someone with a basic knowledge of English grammar do it as well wouldn't be out of place.

As is, it's another waste of time, space and paper - if anyone ever prints it.

For as long as some sectors of the developer community insist on the attitude that anything that isn't the "new black" must of necessity be old-fashioned and therefore forcibly "inefficient", the gap will be there between those who have been around slightly longer than the latest release and those who think the sun started to shine when they learned to talk.

dba/developer has nothing to do with it and is quite frankly a total mis-representation of the matter.

Most of the tennets of agile development read like the absolute basics of ANY development methodology of 30 years ago. The whole thing is nothing more nothing less than a re-hash of ages-old principles with liberal doses of marketspeak thrown in to make it glossy. It adds absolutely no value whatsoever other than uttering common platitudes would.

No surprises why it gets no respect from the folks who have been around a little longer and who went through all that years ago.

Want to be respected by your more experienced peers? Here is a hint: respect back. This may come as a total surprise but no one died and gave you a certificate of "all-knowing". Goes both ways of course, like I said.

And that's about all I'll add to this, quite frankly: not even worth arguing about.

I've just revisited JDeveloper after a two year absence. It's developing into a quite acceptable Toad/SqlPuss/etc alternative!
