Why are TV-series all over the place these days? Studio 60 never made up its mind as to what it was about, and ended up as West Wing with soldiers in Afghanistan and the Pentagon in the Writer's Room.

Damages I lost interest in after two episodes - as it was clear it was headed for mindfuck territory and didn't have a plan worked out. Yes, we're all mean, now move on.

Madmen I settled into in episode 1, got bored with by episode 3, and after episode 4 I have the Season 1 story arc figured out. Don Draper is set up to suck (their advertising does, definitely). Pete Campbell realizes he's an adman - the two end up hitting it off together -- but who cares about these people? And why is it all telegraphed from afar? TV-viewers can't be this stupid, we don't need things written on our noses to get the point, or?
So - Madmen is getting as confused as Studio 60 - and is soon transformed into Desperate Housewives if they don't watch it.

I'm bored already.

The paradox of AV: as the image becomes more and more high-definition, with excesses of resolution beyond anything that is available to display; sound is going into the garbage bin.

I'm not all pessimistic, though. There's been a movement towards better resolution playback, and there are things one can do to really improve playback quality without spending tens of thousands of dollars. I have a lot of fun telling friends to bring their favorite CD over to my house. We play it through a Mac, wireless to an Airport Express, but use the optical digital out from the AE to a stand-alone DAC (LAVRY DA10), which then feeds a pair of compact but good speakers through a forty year old amplifier I have(speakers: Dynaudio Focus 140).
They can't believe their ears - and they've never heard anything like it at home.

Most people only need the good DAC, which will run you from USD 600 and up. Most have an old but good amp in the garage (replaced with a lousy all-in-one unit, or Tivoli Radio, some years ago). Drag the amp back, get out those old speakers you stacked in the back of the garage (or buy some new ones) and rediscover your music.

I consider God must be a boogie man - on Mingus - to be one of the most amazing pieces of music ever written. Personal taste, of course, but the sheer audacity of eking out that piece and launching it on the world is astonishing.

I, too, am devoted to her work!
