in York City WWTP upgrades - StimulusWatch.org on Stimulus Watch
Is it a unionized Waste Water Treatment Plant? If so, then I vote "NO!"

I worked at one of those as a high school intern making $5/hr. And I did a better job than many of the union workers bringing home $50/hr.

I don't find the roads to be in that bad. But I agree, if it's done it better be complete paving and not just patching. I believe someone should pass a law that you can no longer patch a road, that you have to repair the entire width of the lane. This would eliminate 90% of the bad roads in America.

in Wind Turbine at Sound School: A 750kW wind turbine at the Sound School Vocational Aquaculture Center would fulfill all of the facility's electrical needs, creating ongoing savings of approximately... on Stimulus Watch
Okay, I voted for this, is it critical? Probably not, but if it saves $300,000/year, it will at least recoup it's investment in less than 10 yrs. (Sooner if electrical prices jump up in price again.) So as long as the turbine has a minimum of 20-30 year lifespan. Then I think it's a good investment.

Pays for itself in under 10 yrs. Then if the next 10 yrs it pays for it's replacement. And if it lasts 30 yrs it reduces future budget by $2.6 million (adjusted to whatever the price of electricity goes for by then...so it could be a lot more).

The Sound School is a public magnet school that focuses on marine and environmental education. So such a device also furthers their curriculum.

So while I'm not sure ANY of the projects in this stimulus bill are critical. I do think this is an interesting project and also forward looking. That's been the problem with our government. It has difficulty thinking beyond 4 yrs. It's rare that government considers a project that has the potential to recoup it's investment and then actually reduce government's future operating costs.

in Corporate Leave Policies? on Virtuous Code
I guess I forgot to add the following...and pulling this from my mind.

- We get equivalent of three weeks vacation/personal time. 5 sick days.
- Family Fun Day, floating vacation day + $250 to spend time with family and loved ones.
- Birthday off (requires a community service activity)
- Sabbatical at 5/10/15 yrs (with 15th having a $5K travel alotment). I think they're 2 weeks. Though may be 4 weeks at 15 yrs.
(requires a community service activity)
- Summer Schedule (not policy) but they let the entire company flex off every other Friday of the summer by making up the time in the preceding two weeks.

Well, when I started with my company I had a bit of a predicament. My wife was due to have a baby in just a few months...

State law mandates a granting of unpaid leave time I believe. However, that's ONLY if you've worked at the business for over a year. I had only worked for 2 months.

Worse...I didn't even have any vacation time accrued yet. But I had expressed at part of my hiring that I would need the week off after the baby.

Now my company is very nice. They let me have the week off unpaid. But applied a couple of sick days I had accrued toward the week. And I had done a conference and flown on a weekend. So they counted that as a paid day. So I only lost two days of pay.

They also rocked our socks off with a baby shower, including a high chair and 1/2 dozen other gifts.

That said, if you have worked for a company over a year. They are legally required to grant you unpaid leave time for medical issues. I believe that includes for children but I am not sure.

(But if Stacey were sick and you had to take care of the newborn, I believe if you've been legally employed by your employer for over a year you are eligible for the medical leave.)

That said, most good companies should understand and work with you.
