Netcraft has confirmed: Linux is dying

One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered Linux community when IDC confirmed that Linux market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of all servers. Coming on the heels of a recent Netcraft survey which plainly states that Linux has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. Linux is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead last [samag.com] in the recent Sys Admin comprehensive networking test.

You don't need to be the Amazing Kreskin [amazingkreskin.com] to predict Linux's future. The hand writing is on the wall: Linux faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for Linux because Linux is dying. Things are looking very bad for Linux. As many of us are already aware, Linux continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood.

Ubuntu is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its core developers. The sudden and unpleasant departures of long time Ubuntu developers Jordan Hubbard and Mike Smith only serve to underscore the point more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: Ubuntu is dying.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

Fedora leader Theo states that there are 7000 users of Fedora. How many users of SuSE are there? Let's see. The number of Fedora versus SuSE posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 SuSE users. Slackware posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of SuSE posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of Slackware. A recent article put Ubuntu at about 80 percent of the Linux market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 Ubuntu users. This is consistent with the number of Ubuntu Usenet posts.

Due to the troubles of Walnut Creek, abysmal sales and so on, Canonical went out of business and was taken over by Red Hat who sell another troubled OS. Now Red Hat is also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house.

All major surveys show that Linux has steadily declined in market share. Linux is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If Linux is to survive at all it will be among OS dilettante dabblers. Linux continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, Linux is dead.

Re: Rants heard 'round the community ver. 10

What the fuck Dopey Joe? The company is only - only - there to foster the goals of the project. Privacy is one of the big values that the Open Source community shares and feels very strongly about. This is directly contradicting core goals of the whole Open-Source movement.

This will also backslash in a wider audience. Don't even ask for consent using using any popup or anything, and don't promote it.

Even speaking economically, I think your limiting factor is not money, but competent developers.

Please concentrate instead on what *users* want, and do *only* that. Because the world is what we make it.
The Internet is so free and a source of free speech and user empowerment, because it was intentionally designed decentrally. This is not natural: The alternatives back then were AOL and other centralized counterparts in other countries.
Today, we again see a move to centralism. Not because it's natural, but because companies have a vested interest in the data that this gets them. Again, this is not in the user's interest, observe the problems with AIM communicating with MSN, moving from myspace to facebook to linkedin as you grow, etc.. These problems would be avoided, if we were decentral. The privacy problems as well, to a large part. Life is what we make it.

There are forces in both directions, due to certain circumstances like the financial system habits. Open Source and Mozilla has been a force in the direction of user empowerment, doing only what the user wants. That's why Mozilla got big - it was an active statement of millions of users that they are fed with status quo and wanted something that works and that does what *they* want.
This is what's at stake here. Even thinking about other directions enganders that.

Re: COLOR LIFE » Meet the new colors of iPod nano

吹灰~~~~：）

Re: echo 7/udp # August Edition (Belated)

The objective of McCabe scores seems to be to provide a metric, for one procedure/function, corresponding to the number of code paths that reach the same destinations.

To provide context for the way I'm thinking about it...
When you look at execution flow, there's only one path (edge) through code with no conditionals. When you hit a conditional (node A), two edges are created from that one point. On the far end (node B), one edge arrives from the conditional jump (node A), and the other edge arrives from the code just before node B.

The concern seems to be that all those code paths (edges) have to converge on some of the same nodes (somewhat like the kernel of a non-injective function in mathematics). Each one of those code paths may have substantially different state, and the programmer has to be sure that the destination node (node B above) can handle those differences in state.

That's what I got from the comment, at least.

Re: RSA Signature Forgery Explained (with Nate Lawson) - Part II

I'd love to hear an explanation for why the people in charge of the TLS standard haven't added any ciphersuites with alternative hashes.

They add a screwball symmetric algorithm like SEED, yet they can't be bothered to add suites that use SHA-256, SHA-512, Whirlpool, or Tiger, even when there was speculation that SHA-1 would be next to fall when MD5 attacks were announced a couple years ago?

Re: Searching arrays in X86 assembler with a bloom filter pt 3

You can shift by the contents of the CL register, e.g. shl %cl, %eax .

Re: Old School Bell Trick

If you happen to be on a Mac, you can also use command-line text to speech: `say test is done!`

Re: Tom’s Hardware Sold for $15-$20 Million

Surprised it's that low - if you look at his ad rates and glance at how many of his ads were sold it seems it should have bone for more than that.

Re: Partial-Birth Abortion: Sounds “worse than it is”?

George Tiller WAS a hero. He helped women. Who are actual people. Not maybe people. Not pretend people. Not potential people. Real people, with real suffering. You blind your eyes to the pain of women and familes who very much wanted their pregnancies, who very much wanted a baby, and had to seek Dr. Tiller's help to end a catastrophically failed attempt at new life. Instead of seeing their pain, you stand up and get all sentimental and rosy-eyed about What Might Have Been. Your fairy tales never feature babies with no brains, babies with all their internal organs outside their bodies, babies allergic to their own selves. And your fairy tales say that the grieving would-be mothers of those babies don't exist.

You. Make. Me. Here is a clear case against your verbose, pointless and vain article:

del.icio.us is a bookmarking site. del.icio.us lets you share bookmarks.

It can either only let you share bookmarks, in which case you share bookmarks you want to share, or it can let you share some bookmarks, which adds a new functionality that lets you bookmark your sites in a computer / browser agnostic way, including those you don’t want to be made public. Did I say not made public? Oh my gosh, I meant that you don’t want to share.

So your emphasis WHY sharing is GOOD and your tearful lament on the fall web2.0 and civilisation is laughable wrong and pathetically misguided.

Web2.0 (a phrase I hate, but hey, we gotta have up for dullards like you, something tangible to show a change, an incremental number) can be taken as a two pronged result of user fed data sites, as well as data sharing / flexible data access (xml/json across domains, mixing your calendar from google, with weather from wunderground, train schedules from virgin, and show times for after your meeting. OMG I said sharing!

Sharing doesn’t mean YOU sharing YOUR data. It means being able to pull data from sites.

It has nothing to do with privacy, you willingness to share.

Now, look back up at your post and re-evaluate your existence on this planet after you wrote:

"privacy backlash"
"raises fundamental questions"
"mainstream viability of the Web 2.0 value proposition"

What a shit load of overly written crap presumptuous, empty, lethargic and trite bollocks.

"which assumes that everyone will find value in sharing everything in public."

What? everyone will find value sharing? what assumes?

"Web 2.0 only works if we’re willing to cede any grasp on privacy by sharing everything we do online"

Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. Wrong. Some web2.0 apps involve sharing, communicating, building up content from other people. The idea of del.icio.us providing on online bookmarking service for 'PRIVATE' bookmarks somehow warrants you to decide that all Web2.0 revolves around open sharing of everything we do is poppycock.

You now qualify bookmarks with the word 'private' as if bookmarks themselves are by default public.

"How can Web 2.0 be successful in an online world where 60% of long-time Internet users are deleting cookies because of privacy concerns?"

Now deleting cookies poses a threat to web2.0? How silly of you. I do not have the patience not the inclination to educate you on your foolishness here. Can I at least be comforted with the fact that you understand you have written the most uneducated post I have ever written?

And now over 45's find web2.0 cluttered. In fact, some misguided fools would say web2.0 is cleaner, simpler design and navigation.

Maybe I missed that part.

Do yourself, myself, and everyone else a favour:

Stop writing, remove yourself from the gene pool. That would save me having to see your posts track-backed onto the end of otherwise innocuous posts.

Re: What Goes Around Comes Around

Commies!

Re: baratunde.com - Blog - Please backup your hard drive now... twice!

The only data recovery service you should even think about trying is OnTrack. They know the striping patterns of the most popular cards and controllers and can even rebuild failed RAID sets.

Yes, they are expensive. But, if you would have been willing to pay whatver it takes, at least you will know the cost before they preform the recovery.

If you still have the hardware, it certainly would be worth the $100 deposit to have them take a look at it.
