Dropped them a while back: People are coming to your blog because of your unique and compelling content, not to see their photo.

Paul,

Count me in.

As a suggestion: Allow for some tweaking of the people who RSVP to get a good cross section - or could you squeeze the likes of the mobile telco's in later if they were interested?

@Paul W: I think what you have in mind is 'Irish version of BIMA', but tweaked as to what comes out of the January meetup.

Might be good to summarize the discussion / expectations when you announce the date.

I'd be interested - but I would be keen that it doesn't turn into a 'how to extract more grant funding' group.

I would be interested in a group that would raise the profile of the web sector - from 'dot-com-bust' (still mainstream perception) to something of the respect the construction industry gets (got)

As long as nobody trots out the usual 'knowledge economy' guff ...

in Name your price for Radiohead on Life is grand
Far is I know, there is no DRM. Haven't checked out if there is any identification hidden in the MP3 - but given that you could have bought it for 1p (plus 45p credit card charge) I don't think that' a big issue.

Did you buy it?
How much did you pay for it?

in AIB and your personal information on Life is grand
Reminds me a little of the programme RTE ran about estate agents a while back - the one where the estate agent was able to ring up the financial advisor and know *exactly* what you could pay (so that they could ring the last penny out of you).

A car might not be as big a purchase as a house, but same principle.

What are you doing buying an SUV anyway? :-)

in I am now a doctoral student on Eric D. Brown - Technology, Strategy, People & Projects
Eric,

Good luck with the doctorate - it's a long slog , but no doubt worth it in the end.

For people on the other site of the Atlantic UCD are running a similar (masters) course:

in Java doing my head in on Life is grand
Agree 100% with your comments on Enterprise Java (and this is from somebody who makes his living out of it). Way too complex for the simple stuff. And projects need to start out simple then grow over time.

Current angle on this is (J)Ruby. The Ruby part gives me a quick start , plus ability to host pretty much anywhere (it can be hard /expensive to find Java hosting). The JRuby bit means that I can run in the Java Virtual Machine i.e. it gives me a clear migration path if I need to scale.

Just don't diss Eclipse. We've been together 5 years now (pre version 1) and for Project's I couldn't do without it. For mucking around with simple files however you're better off using --Select Editor of Choice here--

I'm glad you turned it off - seems that I can browse over any link on any other blog these days without the annoying popup window. Too small to see the website, just big enough to get in the way.

in Tom Raftery’s complaints fall on deaf ears - Paul Walsh, the Irish Opportunist on Paul Walsh, the Irish Opportunist
Paul,

Quite a considered post on the situation. I do believe that while Michele should respect the power of the blogosphere, Tom should use carefully the power he has through his readership. After all , Tom works as a consultant to business and has his own reputation to manage.

Does it give you a way to automatically delete 'dead' RSS feeds (i.e. people no longer blogging). Currently using bloglines and this feature is sorely missed.
