I also think Youtube could play a role here by helping clients (and agencies) better understand their audience (beyond how many uniques, video streams etc) and how to best utilise the platform.

You followed 1,000 people and you still didn't follow me?

I'm crushed. You're doing nothing for my numbers.

While shows like Idol and Big Brother are effectively brand funded, I think we're a little way off brand initiated concepts hogging prime time.

It may not be in peak time, but the TV show is just one part of a broader platform - it's a major marketing tool for the entertainment not just the entertainment.

When you look at it like this, the numbers probably stack up fairly well.

The first episode of King Gee Jack of all Trades (series 4) recently clocked up 1 million viewers on Nine in off peak, but it's reach will be a lot more significant when you look at all the other marketing activity like instore promotion for example.

mrtruffle Why is King Gee show only available in QT format? Makes it much harder to track views or even encourage conversation while watching?

In my mind, this is really just the same as a company sending a sought after celebrity their new sneakers. Hey they don't have to wear them, but if they do, and are photographed or talk about them, big kudos for the brand.

in Twitter is Shit at... on Bannerblog News
I'm so addicted to Twitter even though it's a bit shit.

Imagine if it was really good. That could be really bad.

I'm going to resist the link pimping thing here but I did just write a post complaining about people's obsession with numbers on Twitter. Like how many followers they have "ooh I'm about to reach 4,000 followers" or "help @dumbo get his 1000th followers"

That's what annoys me about Twitter the most.

mrtruffle yeah there really seems to be stat junkies on Twitter. Ive seen people with 7000 follows link to something, I check that link and it's had 123 views.

That's a pretty shit CTR :)

This is one of the most interesting campaigns of 2008. Twitter is changing the way we both consume and interact with entertainment, and I can't wait to see how this develops in 2009.

Also some great thinking on Mad Men, Twitter and its influence on entertainment at www.wearesterlingcooper.com

Great post Ben. It's great that the producers recognise the intangible (and exponential) value of this 'social footprint' beyond the raw numbers.

benhamin for sure, the only thing is I wonder who's actually managed to get this through to the producers, marketers - its an extremely smart social marketing campaign.

This is the first example I've seen of such a deep and real experience around a TV series - seemingly with the actor/character themselves. Even Lost with its complex ARG was something that could be released at scheduled points.

The value is evident but the hours involved in maintaining this type of engagement is significant. Love to know more.
