clever, indeed! when i was talking to etsy about getting hired, i thought about screenprinting my credentials onto something (probably a tea towel). amy of wondercabinet (http://wondercabinet.etsy.com) made the most beautiful textured book collage from vintage flocked wallpaper and a golden book when she was in the hiring process (i wonder what became of it...). it's certainly a place that makes you really think about what you can do to stand out if you want to work there.
my favorite hiring story from etsy is still that jim was offered his job while standing in line for a hot dog at renegade, back in the good old days.

citizen, by that logic, should we also not have signage on the streets? i've never heard of this "people will hit trees in their cars and sue the city" logic before. please enlighten me.

i totally agree on these two points. i'd also add that it's important natural leaders of self-formed/ geographic communities to break down the still-present technology barrier for older neighbors, or neighbors who don't use computers.
forming great circles of communication for neighbors savvy enough to converse online is great, but someone also needs to take on the responsibility of being a bridge and communicating the big ideas to non-computer residents, whether it's having a cup of coffee once a week, agreeing to print a synopsis of the week's discussions and slide it in the mail slot or just catching up really quickly when you see them on the front steps. the more neighbors in the loop on things the better.

i'm interested in how you're defining lots of little neighborhoods within neighborhoods. i almost want to call them microhoods.
for example, i (proudly!) live in newbold, which is defined by our charter as washington ave to snyder, broad st to 18th. but within that larger neighborhood are so many little communities (physically - there are even more nongeographical communities). the block my house is on (my microhood) has very little overlap with my boyfriend's block (his microhood), even though our houses are probably less than a football field's length apart.
if each microhood grows strong through communication, and then has some overlapping or communication with its neighboring microhoods, that could be incredible. think of how much change and good could be initiated by whole networks of neighbors who are on the same page? amazing!

Sara, such great insight. We just had a developers meeting today where we discussed this. It's this whole question of how strictly do you define you 'neighbors'. In one place it could just be your street, in another you building, in another multiple steets . . . the combinations are endless. I think what were going to initially do is make flexible enough so that it works in all these situations, essentially making the groups more user defined. I have a feeling that the driving force behind using the platform will be the 'block' captain we talked about in a previous post. If that is the case then Sync St really wants to facilitate them as much as possible. I don't know if there is an right answer when it come to defining neighborhoods but if we do it right the user will ultimately show us.

i love, love, love mad men, and totally enjoyed the characters on twitter. now, the irony of AMC taking legal action against the best marketing money could buy (which they had, of course, been getting for free) is just classic in demonstrating the gap between tv and engaging social media.
anyway. i pretty much plan my week around sunday nights now. erik totally makes fun of me drooling over the wardrobe and set dressings in every episode.

last time i was talking about how biking is the best way to get around the city, i got doored mid-sentence (luckily it was on 9th, literally steps away from the door to the emergency room). superfun.
i still think biking is the best (although i do love a good walk), i just wish drivers would be more aware and more educated about how to interact with cyclists in the city. if i had a beer for everytime some asshole told me to 'get on the sidewalk', i'd be one superdrunk girl.
