Review

In general I'm not really a fan of the free to play model. I think it too often takes away from the gameplay and the fun. Which is why we play games in the first place. If a game interrupts the fun, it's badly designed no matter what the payment model. Too often games companies push the monetization to spectacular levels especially with timers. Too often it just feels wrong. I just want to play a game and am happy to pay a fair price for it.

The comments here sound like they are coming from people who have never played a free to play game. The tactics you mention are all too common in free to play games. They were not mentioned in the review because they are so common. A quick look at the top 10 grossing shows that the 8 games in the top 10 all use tactics similar to Angry Birds Go.

The way to protest against these games are to buy premium games and not buy IAP in these games. So every time you see a game compromised by IAP and free to play monetization tactics, go buy a premium game. It's the only way things are going to change.

Oh, and feel free to rage against the games like this in the comments, vent away. But don't take our ethical standards into question just because you are angry. It makes you look silly and uninformed.

-Jeff Scott
EiC, 148Apps

Re: Disney Infinity: Toy Box Comes to iPad

No, you can use it without the toys. It's a major defect in the game that is likely to confuse many players that will run into this confusing point.

A note has been added to the review clarifying this.

-Jeff Scott

Re: How To: Create a Foreign iTunes Account and Download New Apps And Games Early

The key is to make sure you kick it off by trying to download a free app. If you try to download a paid app or try to start the process by just creating an account, those are the times it will require payment info.

Re: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Review

Carter has had the game on his iPad for about 10 days. Impartial and unbiased. A huge number of the reviews on the App Store are by people with an agenda. They either want to rate an app they like at first glance high ("this app rulez!") or blackmail the app developer into making a change in the app that only one person would care about with a low rating ("1 star until you do X"). Those people skew the score in the App Store such that it can really not be used as an indicator of app quality.

Professional reviewers are capable taking an unbiased look at an app, comparing it with other similar apps, and applying a score to the app based on it's merits (and faults), not some hidden agenda.

Details on what / how we review are here: http://www.148apps.com/abou... and here: http://www.gotoats.org/what...

Cheers,
Jeff Scott

Re: This is What a Retina iPad Game Looks Like – Zen Bound 2 Sample Screens

Certainly isn't useless for those with the new iPad.

Re: ‘Item is currently being modified’

I've seen it hundreds of times now.
