in Are schools necessary? on eduFire
Agreed, agreed, agreed. And amen to number 10!
What drives me nuts about education is I don't feel like they trust the kids/teenagers to know what they want. They literally force you to believe that they know better, which drives me crazy. What kid doesn't have a burning desire to learn? And if a teacher could act more like a facilitator, pointing them in the direction where they can get information on what they want-- every child would flourish.
We're all born with gifts-- its just that memorizing useless facts isn't one of them for a lot of us. ;)

Jon- Love the gaming article. I dunno if you have ever heard of typing of the dead:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Typing_of_the_...
but I think its a good example. One of the most fun experiences you can have-- and you are learning how to type at the same time.
And we have all heard stories of people who used Microsoft's flight simulators to learn how to fly planes.
Even before I learned how to drive, I knew how to drive stick, since I played so many racing games. haha The potential here is nuts. I think the math software out there now is lame, and they could be teaching much more complex stuff, we don't need to be learning addition with games-- get me deep into the most complex equations and theories, and id be much happier. ;)

Patrick,
I too have been really impressed with the quality of computers you can get from dell for really reasonable prices. When my friend told me he needed a new pc, and asked how much it would cost to get a nice laptop-- I told him $800, only to find what he wanted only cost $499 from Dell. Incredible stuff.

I agree wholeheartedly with your confirming 'misty eyes' that edu rev is going to play a huge role in ending poverty on earth.
On another note, I do kinda wish *my* pc could be powered with a crank... ;)

Well, if the current one can't be saved, mind as well make a new one. As education revolution sets the example of a better way, people will undoubtedly flock towards it. There are a lot of people wanting this. Amazing what you can do with code.. =) Thanks Kareem!
