in People are increasingly reading books on their iPhones on The Equity Kicker
I'm intrigued by the stats Nic and thanks for sharing.

At first, you could conclude that the Kindle & Iphone will replace books if one were to extrapolate this data over the next X years etc. However, on inspection we need to remember that this is Iphone owner data and Iphone owners are a unique crowd - ie early adopters, tech feature hungry etc comprising 4% of the market.

In 1972 there were 5 known elvis impersonators, by 1980 there were over 10,000. On the basis of this data, 1 in every 2 people on the planet would be an Elvis impersonator! :)

The moral being that Kindle & Iphone are great platforms for books and this market will grow, however there let's not forget the 96% who prefer the old fashioned printed dead tree variant.

in A Way To Increase Legal Music Purchases on Another Advertising Wanker
Likewise, Nathan, I'm fascinated because of all the content forms out there it's possibly the most emotive subject. I don't see customers getting worked up about movies, games and newspapers(?) in the same way they do about music. That aside, I'm curious as to the potential of the Majors using their content to cross-sell merchandise as you mention. Rolling Stones made $250m touring in the US - no beer money. U2 must be up there too.

Similarly, most artists are reaping more $$ out of ticket sales, collectors editions and the Tees than from the CDs - so does this demonstrate that a) fans still love and are willing to pay for music and b) it's just the distribution method and products they object to?

nathanbush Exactly Graham - it's not that the industry is unprofitable, but the $ has to come from a different way. And consumers aren't backlashing against music per se (ticket sales are up) but against the distribution model. They spoke up and demonstrated that they weren't happy with place, time, price - no labels listened and they got themselves to this point.

in Guest Post - Generation Y in the Workplace Explained on Chris Brogan
It's an insightful article. The irony is that my generation asked for exactly the same things... The insight stems from the reality that every generation likes to think it is unique and somehow different from the next - why burst the bubble?

in Does Disney think it’s customers are stupid? on The Equity Kicker
Interesting how transparency is catching out many big brands now... will marcomms finally get the message? I've blogged about your post over @ http://www.youth-marketing-buzz.com/2008/10/buz...
