This pisses me off. Splog to the core. I am really disappointed in WordPress right now.

I dislike the term social media, but in the end it's only a short cut, a phrase, to make explaining something we use as a tool more standard. I explain it to each client in whatever way works best for them. :) Nice article, Mark.

I think that I would lose a bit of trust in those using Magpie. I tend to trust my friends' recommendations on Twitter now because they are organic. I think this would cause me to lose some of that.Perhaps credibility is a better word than trust, but either way, I feel that this would cause a decrease in that over all credibility.

@meetinbetween.us - if it finds the halfway point between infinite locations, that makes it even more useful to travelers like myself who want to meet friends while on the road.

I use a variety of services for contact management, including Word Press. I don't like to rely on only one web solution, just in case. I'll check this out to possibly add to my arsenal.

Thanks for the calming, realistic post. I've been telling people not to panic for days now. (Handing out towels left and right, so to speak.) Is this tight? Hell yes. Is it bad? Hell yes. What makes it worse, though, is panic. Right now most media outlets are fanning the flames of panic and our current "leader" (and I use the term so very loosely in reference to GWB) does not have the ability and demeanor to calm the populace while the economy rights itself, as it will.

"For those of us who prefer to do our own sorting, Hakia won’t be the answer," (I would be one who'd rather vet my own search results, but that doesn't mean the site wouldn't work for someone else)

I can not believe the music industry is still causing us to have to police them in an age where we should already have made vast inroads on unique and varied electronic music distribution. It stinks. Giving this one a stumble and a Digg and a Mixx - we need to lobby.... SOMEONE... to fight this.

The extreme number of hall monitor types showing up in the comments of a valid post make me think I need to revisit the issue of rules, experts and social media. I spoke about it once before (http://uptownuncorked.com/2008/07/26/there-are-...) but now I may elaborate further. Food for thought.

Interesting debate going on in the comments here. In my opinion the potential for making it easy to get people involved outweighs any need for nanny-ing the Twitter stream on this one. The nice thing about Twitter - if something feels spammy, people will tell you, and you can stop. And if you don't stop, people can unfollow you. It's very a la carte and self directed and doesn't require a lot of policing or rules, which is why Twitter works so well in the first place.
I think this mashup is the start of something great, and I can't wait to see how it improves in the next iteration with rating tools and other matrixes.

Did you see this article on the Journal's inappropriate excitement level over the recent catastrophe? Wonder if the crisis is helping their pay-wall network. :)

Andy, posts like the "Twego" one only serve to perpetuate separation and hamper social media as a tool for getting things done and effecting change.
Ralph, I would use Myspace, FaceBook or whatever other tool my target demographic preferred to reach them and tap into their offline network to get things done, yes.
Thanks, Sean :)

I really like Utterz. Iuse the voice Utterz all the time. I've never been able to get the video to work properly though, which is a bummer (and which I'm sure has more to do with my set up than Utterz). Interesingly, because of the multiple types of content and interaction I don't even think of it as competing with 12seconds or 15seconds - it beats them both hands down. And it does so much more than both Qik and Seesmic I don't think of it as competing with them either. I briefly considered mentioning it, but decided it didn't quite fit the article. I am a big fan, though.

My apologies to 12seconds, then, as I didn't see a way to post to Twitter when nosing around their site a while back :)

Thank you. Couldn't have said it better myself.
They make an open source blogging engine - someone creates a spam project on top of it, and you're mad at wordpress?
Though Mashable put the wordpress logo there, I see no mention of any affiliation.
Open Source licenses don't discriminate based on field of endeavor - so that means the "bad guys" can use it just as much as the good guys . . .
