Turn the prism slightly and you will see Iran a short pipeline away from the Caspian region's oil rich ex-soviet satellites. Their independence, as well as Europe's oil/gas customers need for healthy competition from Russian sources are not unimportant.
Again, another turn of the prism would reveal the utility of Iran in reconstruction of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Another twist of the prism, and it is clear that safe passage of oil exports through the Persian Gulf, stability and affordability of oil price are matters of economic survival for Iran. At the same time, a reduced US military foot print, and a greatly expanded US educational/cultural/financial foot print in the region will result in a bigger bang for the buck in defense of US national interests.
Lastly, the demonization of a nation has thrown a great many professionals, scientists, and able administrators, etc out with the bath water. The insults leveled at 'wide-eyed' mullahs is perceived by 1.3 billion Muslims as an insult to their religion. In what way does the US benefit from such schoolyard insults?
As George Washington said in his farewell address:
"The nation which indulges toward another an habitual hatred or an habitual fondness is in some degree a slave. It is a slave to its animosity or to its affection, either of which is sufficient to lead it astray from its duty and its interest."

Iran launched a small satellite into low orbit. This was done by the Iranian space agency, who have a web site, email, phone numbers, etc. I am sorry to say not one western journalist could peel themselves away from their sell-speculation-as-fact habit.
Call the folks at the space agency. Ask them about their budgets, long term plans, who they report to, etc. Then publish the facts.
PS. Iran has not invaded any of her neighbors in over 200 years.

On Iran's part, accepting the legitimacy of U.S. interests in the region, is the relatively easy process of a country with 68 times less GDP and 110 Times less military budget, recognizing the might of a superpower so long as it is assured its concerns are taken into account.
