in 5 Reasons to Avoid Using DRM On Your Site on Plagiarism Today
Great article Jonathan and thanks for the Numly mention! I wanted to add that Numly Numbers can also be used for tracking orphan works of photos, songs, and other digital assets in addition to articles. Once the digital asset is uploaded to Numly, we store off the digital fingerprint representation of the digital work and allow you, the creator, to assign your rights accordingly. Specific rights (All Rights Reserved or Creative Commons) can be assigned directly to individuals or companies and the Numly Numbers serve as receipts for anyone that finds attached to an asset. You can also upload the asset to Numly and if it's on file already, we will link you to the creator and the rights associated with the authorized assignment.

I believe that we will see a rise in DRA over DRM since it supports for the freedom of expression with the ability to track assignments, licensees, and creators. One thing is for sure, plagiarism is becoming more difficult to disguise.

in The Copyright Office’s Online Registration System on Plagiarism Today
Jonathan, I enjoyed reading your review. What is discerning to me is that this office has been working on this project for years. They should have done some marketplace analysis and come up with something at least on par with numly or registered commons. I suppose that you are right (as usual). If eCO perceives themselves as being the only "legal" solution for U.S. residents, they could view themselves as a monopoly and deliver a sub-par product. Why? Because they can...

How does this url service handle advertisements such as google ads in the page? I would imagine that the next time the page is loaded and the ads don't match, the hash will be invalid. Lars, can you clarify?

in Protecting the Comment Feed on Plagiarism Today
I would recommend having an ESN embedded in each post so that the feed contains multiple ESNs. If your feed only shows the first 250 characters or so of your post, put it in the title or at the top of your post to ensure that it is picked up in the feed.

If you are running WordPress, you may be able to embed the Numly plugin into your comments with a minor tweak. If so, this would be the best of both worlds and allow you to protect your contributors' works with copyrights on their behalf.

What do you think?

in Protecting the Comment Feed on Plagiarism Today
This is even more of a reason to a Numly Number as a copyright license in your RSS feed. Many of the splogging tools on the market today do not strip out these license identifiers but rather treat them as content.

Having the Numly Number embedded in the feed and ultimately appearing on someone else's web site is like advertising that your content has been lifted. You can even use the Numly Number to track back to the original copyright submission and find or contact the author.

Jonathan,

Your article is well written. You have obviously done your homework. I do have one point though. I don't believe that the courts have every admitted evidence without sworn statements for non-official country documents.

I have always expected that our first two or three copyright disputes would involve depositions and sworn testimonies on policies, procedures, and security reviews. The first company to be tested and win may change the certificate theory so to speak. This may take some time as it may be on a country by country basis. Surely other countries' court systems do not have Copyright Offices and deal with similar matters regularly.

Numly has also taken an extra step in helping people prove that they are who they say they are by establishing Vouchor.com. Real world identities are certified and matched up with copyright submissions to establish credible and verifiable submissions. These steps plus out willingness to provide sworn testimonies should continue to provide security and trust in our services.

Keep up the good work!

in Content Licensing: The Sensational Seven on Plagiarism Today
Great post Jonathan!

I would like to clarify one point on the Numly review. Numly's content monetizing engine is Docly, a web-based word processor. If articles or documents are drafted and published using Docly, the content automatically receives a Numly number and allows the author to declare the copyright (ARR or CC) and the price of their Docly document.

As Docly documents are purchased via Docly.com, new Numly numbers are automatically generated and assigned to the customer's purchased document with the license selected by the author. Customers have access to purchased Docly documents via a library in the Docly portal which can be referenced online at anytime.

Give Docly a try today :)

in Why Use Copyright Notices? on Plagiarism Today
In addition to (c)opyright marks and claims, you could stamp your work with (N)umly numbers. Numly provides authors and artists a way to freely or inexpensively submit their digital works online along with their desired All Rights Reserved or Creative Commons license and receive a verifiable Numly Number and HTML that can be embedded into your work to prove your copyright.

Numly Numbers are linked back to Numly's database to provide third party, non-repudiation services and time stamps of submitted works and meta data associated with the copyright.

I think that this is a great idea! You have an amazing perspective on the copyright landscape both existing and upcoming copyright laws as well as strong ideas on where copyright laws should be going.

You were instrumental in the formation of my startup with its copyright questions and your suggestions. Your advice was always well received and proved to be right on! In fact, I plugged you and your site on my most recent Numly podcast interview on episode 31 of the Web 2.0 Show!

Thanks,

It looks like you are using WordPress as your blogging platform. You guys should look into using Numly.com's blog copyrighting services for your content. They have a WordPress plug-in that automatically registers your posts with Numly for copyright either All Rights Reserved or Creative Commons licenses and embeds the Numly Number directly into your blog post with the verification link. In addition to protecting your copyright, this service also seems to work against sploggers.

Brilliant post!

Have you heard about Numly.com? They allow you to register your works online and return a verifiable Numly Number for proof of copyright submission. To my knowledge, sploggers do not strip their Numly Numbers from their posts. This provides proof of where they picked up the original copyrighted post.
