I like Wright's view that The Kingdom is here. This is the kingdom and we're to go and tell everybody about it. That said, part of that job is telling them about the Grace of God that has saved us. People are not able to see the kingdom (total depravity) until they are born of the Spirit.

How about you Henry?

Re: Essence of the Gospel?

I agree God is not a transaction. They always have some goofy bible quote, or theological question that sends me straight to Google (not as often as before though).

Movies are like that as well. The DaVinci Code or Million Dollar Baby were great conversation movies. All I had to say was -- "well, what about the idea that ..." K/i> and we were on.

That said, prudence and parents' permissions are a must. James White doesn't answer the question and I wish he did.

Another question is: how do we avoid double-predestination?

I've just started reading some articles by John Piper, and he's really good. I'm taking my time reading and learning about predestination because I really want to understand it - especially as it relates to the problem of suffering and evil.

Any book recommendations would be great.

Edgar,

Re: Weaknesses in the Church Today

Some things to consider are:
1. - God is in Control.
2. - Prayer. Let's pray for everybody.

3. - Paul does a good job outlining People's sin in Romans 3 and then goes on to tell them why there's hope for them. Which brings us to the main point. We need to tell people they're sinners. Unless they know, there's no good news.
For some people think they're good and that they're going to Heaven. For others, there's no God and "let's just be nice"

Both Calvinists and Arminians understand the need of the great commission. To say otherwise is to deny the Lord's command to go and teach all nations. There's no excuse for not evangelizing. It is biblical.

Re: predestination defined

I've been studying the subject for a bit now, and I just re-read your post.

"According to Edwards, a human being is not only free to choose what he desires but he must choose what he desires to be able to choose at all. This means that every choice is free and every choice is determined. But determined does not mean that some external force coerces the will. Rather it refers to one”s internal motivation or desire. In short, our choices are determined by our desires"

One question with this quote is: how does Human Nature relate to "Desires". My concern is that God predestines every choice and desire - even the bad ones so how am I responsible for my Sin when he has predestined my "human nature" to be sinful?

As a believer, it is great I'm one he predestined to salvation. In order to do that, he had to create in me my Sinful nature. He did this through Adam. He knows that I can never choose him on my own (Romans 3). This is sinful nature, right? If yes, he himself made me this way so I'm predestined and so was my human nature. And if he made me like this, how is it that I'm still responsible for the way he made me?

Paul asks us: who are you to ask God for an explanation? I'm Ok with this rhetorical answer if that is the best answer there is for this dilemma. I'm Ok with it because I believe the Bible is the word of God so if he says so, that's that.

Hope this makes sense. If not, let me know and I can rephrase. The imputation is a wonderful way to explain it. It makes sense. That said, we're left with Honzo's question: Is God the Author of Sin?

The answer would have to be yes - not that he sins but he allows Sin to happen. Not that he allows it "remotely" but that he actually ordained it to be. Reason? For the riches of his Glory.

By the way, check out this video in which Sproul explains Imputation.

Re: The Book of Abraham

Thanks for posting this video.
Don't forget to check "DNA vs. The Book of Mormon" found here:
http://www.lhvm.org/vid_dna_med.htm

Edgar

Re: History in the Eyes of the Ancients

I like this post. This is all interesting.

I'm with the classical view that God knows all things. St. Augustine made the point that in God, there's no change, there's no pause, there's no time. God has existed eternally -- willing everything eternally & speaking all words eternally. In other words, God doesn't speak one word at the time or thinks one thought at the time. God thinks everything, speaks everything, and wills everything eternally - because otherwise, he would be mutable & subject to change.
Book 11/Confessions.

Then again, Augustine was a Platonist!

Re: Love and the Trinity

I'm with Hank on this one. From a human perspective, love should be our driving force. Our greatest ethic like St. Paul rightly said. We are to be loving to our neighbors, reaching out to others, and being servants to one another and our communities.

From God's perspective, we really don't know him fully to determine his greatest attribute. Edwards makes a good point.

Edgar

Re: Monday Morning Theology: Open Theism and an Evil God

JR,

More Thoughts on Incarnation
God is a spirit (John 4:24). By the incarnation, God didn't change. The son remained the son (a child is born. A son is given ). The trinity - God remained the same.

But it gets better: Jesus asks: "My God, my God, Why have you forsaken me?"...now this one... this one did change something. Ravi Zacharias says that the relationship between the father and son was a bit disturbed. As if the father turned his back on the son while he suffered for the sins of the world... Yet, the nature of God remained intact.

Man - this is great stuff. Making me think...

Looking forward to some more thoughts.

p.s. Which is the book that deals with Purgatory, and Original Sin?

In retrospect, I have no idea how the Total Depravity Line got in there. It definitely doesn't follow the conversation.

As far as Romans 3 and Romans 8, I'm not going to touch on those two because - as we would agree - there are plenty of interpretations: Thus, Calvinists vs. Arminianism. I'm definitely not going to convince you with a comment.

Tom 1st,
Determinism and Freedom are mutually exclusive from human terms because we don't have a full picture. Thus, we're free to choose but the choices are given. The one that gives us the choices has determined the outcome. Especially if someone really knows you well, he can predict your choices and reactions (e.g. God).

I still think Patrick & Penelope made free choices. No one forced them.

This is really great conversation guys. Were they writing the Psalms and Proverbs and Ecclesiastics at the same time they were having their wild orgies?

Or did they get saved, left their old selves behind, and then write their stuff?

I wonder if their writings would lose meaning if we found out they had been written at the same time the wild parties were going on. Many might have even died trying - no ones. The great women of history: Sor Juana Ines De la Cruz, Joan of Arch, The Bleeding women in Mark 5:21, Queen Elizabeth, Antigone, tabitha from Acts 9:36, etc, they are the ones we have and know about. Why are there no more? Did history erase their names and contributions?

My concern is with women playing the victim role. On knowledge. On an idea, or concept. At least in your mind, you must know what you believe in. If you are horribly wrong, that's your problem. The semantics of Faith remain the same. That is, God doesn't answer our prayers so he probably doesn't exist. I just want to remind everybody that - Jesus himself had prayers that were unanswered. Jesus prayed: 'Take this cup from me' before he was crucified, and before that night, he prayed for his church to remain united (One Church). Neither of this happened. So prayers cannot be a test for God.

Now to answer your questions Honzo, I agree with you. Christianity has the better story. It also explains and answers life's most important questions: Origin, Morality, Meaning and Destiny. It is the most coherent.

Take the two you mention: Buddhism is illogical. Its greatest goal is to stop all desire. But why does the Dalai Lama desire the liberation of Tibet? Why desire anything? Why do Buddhists protest?

Islam claims Jesus didn't die on the cross. Among all historians, there are two groups: the ones that say Jesus didn't exist (small group), and the rest of historians that say he died on the cross (resurrection aside). In any case, Islam is false.

The rest of the world religions (except for hinduism perhaps) are weak candidates. Mormons, Jehovas, the christian cults, etc. have nothing against the historicity of the Bible. Hinduism is a little tougher to chew on (haven't thought much on it) and my only argument against it would be that - again - we have the better story.

thoughts?

Re: God is Fake.

Honzo, your point is well taken. I would rather be one Church with subgroups of people that don't agree with certain views. For example at the company that I work for, there are some policies that I disagree with but I still live by them. If people ask me my opinion, I tell them what I think, but I finish with 'but I don't make the rules around here..." we could follow something similar with the church.

That said and to answer your 2nd question - When does “not comprising” win over “be of one body?”

I would say that when you break orthodoxy, then you are no longer a follower of Jesus.

having a single denomination will build false expectations. we will always have empty bottles with labels on them. We see this at churches even now.

The diversity of orthodox denominations may be keeping the body of Christ healthy by weeding out the bad and keeping the orthodox strong.

Re: What is the Word of God?

ElShaddai has put it well. N.T. Wright makes it sounds like the Kingdom of God is right here - right now. I like the idea. I kind of agree with him.
It makes sense to me.

I look at the Resurrection [Or perhaps ascension?] as the "Son of Man" coming in the clouds of heaven before "this generation" passes away. To me - this means his kingdom has come. Here and now.

After all - Jesus did go around telling people - "the kingdom of heaven is at Hand"... well, there. Here it is - right now. He did promise, no?

If you've read N.T. Wright, you may see that I'm already biased for his take on this.

Anyway, on a side note, NT Wright was on the Stephen Colbert show. For someone like me that I just want to hear the arguments (I don't have to take notes or highlight stuff), these would be great audio books.

N.T. Wright sounds greats. But knowing you're a buff on the subject, I enjoyed reading this.

quick question - When tertulian writes "Virgin" - does he literally mean - sexually a virgin? or simply someone who was a young teenage woman? or someone who never married?

On Baptism 17, i think it is great to see him call people out on what he knows they made up (or like you said, "might have heard"). This is something Bart Earhman doesn't like to admit sometimes. That people changed the text. Yes. But people knew (or probably knew) when things changed and they followed (to their best intentions) the orthodoxy chain they have been passed on.

I like your study of their inscriptions - I think that really tells the story. Though I'm sure there was a Inscription Inquisition led by Constantine. LOL.

Re: Thesis is finally online

just a quick comment - I think you should give this post a better title so when people link to it - it looks good ...

how about: Tomas - The Crazy Twin...

seriously though...
