I completly agree. Web2.0 is people, yahoo is on the right track and is building tomorrow's web.

I was in the discussion with Jason and I think his conclusion was very good i.e an opt-in system. My main problem is more how they would spend the money !
i've spent some times with regional leaders of wikimedia outside the US and they all talk about the inside fights ... so imagine if they had 100 millions to spend.
Greed is good if you apply it to knowledge ... profit is more complexe has it gives power.
I am still thninking over this but the answer is not stright forward.
Wikipedia should make money as mozila but they need clear (i.e managed) goals before harvesting dollars.

Nearly all the debate on mentization for wikipedia started there. And I've been participating since the beginning.

That's all I came up over the last two days.

Or maybe I'll pay 1$ for every user that register on U.[lik] from wikipedia if they right an article (freely of course) that describes the service. I've been banned because my alexa ranking was too small (when many Recommendation Systems described in the collaborative filetring page were a lot smaller and for some as "good" in term of "reduce-usability" as ours).

And I'm sure, scrutiny will be huge on these "clients" or on "bibliography" if we go that way.

Marketing is king in edition because it makes Hit !

The main problem is time... all these places change all the time.
When Entertainment is stable, it's easier in terms of database to deal with something than can be stocked.

If I may... two comments.
First, review come on top of price (crowdstorm is a good example also using kelkoo)
Second, ranking review is also part of the personnalization. We use affinity because we think that common background is needed when reading a review(especially for content) again popularity is just the first step.

What you talked about is Collaborative Filtering vs Content Based.
But mainly it's Human Behaviour (Lastfm) vs Fixed Information (Pandora's Genome).

The fight is being alive from a very long time among academics. They both have pros & cons. Wikipedia as a good explaination of it.

And from my point of view pandora & lastfm are a perfect couple !

That's why we've been mixing the two technologies together ... when we have data we use Collaborative when not we use Content Base.

But many challenges are facing both solutions. What if pandora was wikipedianlike, what if Lastfm known that two songs with different title ar in fact the same one ....

You need Human computation to face the Riya problem (cf. Sam's comment), you need Silicium Computation to do what can be automatic.

I agree a good answer will be to embrace both of them so you can use the fastest.

Think about illustration picture on lastfm. And try changing one on U.[lik]. Who is making the category on leiki ? Will it be right for me, or do I use a different tagging method ?

It's definitely not a black & white problem. Finding the perfect grey it's what really matter. And I haven't seen one yet (even @ home) but I'm looking for a Rothko's painting. Black on one side white on the other ... with a blur transition that creates fascination.

I completly agree with personal value before Network value. And the example of tagging is excellent (thanks for the link). I think tagging is for personal use = organize. Then you can use it for Network value (Tagging will be available in 2 weeks on U.[lik] and i think we came with a pretty good solution).

when i was in a fund of fund ... I learned from academic researches that 1-Y IRR is not really usefull. I think yuor phrase “Never underestimate the power of what people want to believe” is really applying to it. 1-Y IRR is too correlated to market valuation and fundraising cycles.

But I agree on the global picture without any vested interest in it.

I think nic is right on the fact that facebook could not be an OS. they surely are building a great plateform (which will, by the way, benefit mainly the us industry)

Facebook will be one channel for distribution, that's for sure (distribution matters and Nic will agree on that one) but I am the only one in my freinds listening to contemporary music. I need last.fm or U-lik to find partners for it. It's the same thing with photography, i don't want to talk about camera but about the work of Goldworthy.

Nic, I think we talked about this quite a while ago. Danah & Fred have put a lot of energy on describing the "clubs" and by contrast they've shown that you need social items to make weak ties valuable.

There is a cost to don't do evil !

For me crunchbase is a good idea since it sum up information not always available on corporate website like amount raised...

But i do agree with you Nic, outbound like are good but cost you because it reduces your # of VP. So since the advertising industry is still lagging and we are in a phase of rentability we should see more of this in the coming years.

Nevertheless, i do feel that it destroys value for me as a user (again maybe not with crunchbase but they should put both links).

Semantic will probably do more arm like this. People with larger properties will be rebuilding what's available elsewhere.

So, first of all let me explain why facebook is in Pro. Facebook was in the pro section because of its University approach. And the way you introduced me in your post is a great example of it. I am an Alumni and this matter really in a professional environment. The fact that you could check my alumni identity is great part of Facebook uniqueness.

Then, Yahoo. I am not sure yet it’s a real strategy for the group. It’s at least a strategy for M&A team. I’ve confessed about this in a previous post: http://ulik.typepad.com/leafar/2006/11/maybe_i_...

Mybloglog is a perfect example of it. Cheap buy, nice identity puzzle piece. Facebook is also one of Yahoo’s Target. I’ve selected companies in the puzzle with no intention of describing Yahoo. But it just happened that Yahoo is interested in nearly all of them.

The title of the puzzle is Identity 0.2 because I think it’s only the beginning of it (it’s also a marketing pun) … and Yahoo is poistionning on it very early. It’s probably already the only company that could really leverage this trend. As always it does not mean it’s cash at the end of the day. But if you believe in it, you have to acknowledge that Yahoo nails it very strongly.

the most important for me are :

9 -> Started u-lik when i was 25 mainly because i did it once before that deadline.

After 1.5 years back in finance and i was feeling the pressure of 7 and 4 growing.
